An idyllic landscape unfurls, acres of lush green fading into
a forest beneath the bluest of skies. A dirt road winds
through the terrain.
A lone HORSEMAN charges toward a distant provincial town, his
horse's hooves kicking up a dust vortex.
EXT. PALACE - DAY
Surrounded by timeless stone walls, the Palace stands in
serene grandeur as humble villagers stroll about.
The horseman arrives, dismounts, and darts urgently toward
the Palace entrance.

INT. PALACE - DAY
The horseman, CARDINAL ORSINI, hurries through the courtyard
and grand hallways. His youthful look complements his sincere
eyes. Two Bishops follow.
Cardinal Orsini arrives outside the Papal quarters. Servants
open the doors and allow him inside.
INT. PAPAL QUARTERS - DAY
The room glows with opulence. Saints gaze from painted realms
on the walls. Marble floors gleam beneath angled sunlight.
At the far end, a colossal bed cradles the frail form of POPE
CLEMENT IV, cocooned by solemn bishops.
Orsini nods to the bishops, strides to the ailing Pope and
takes his trembling hand, gently kisses it.
CARDINAL ORSINI
Holy father.
Pope Clement squints until recognition paints his eyes.
POPE CLEMENT IV
Cardinal Orsini...
2.
CARDINAL ORSINI
You have given the Church a great
service. Your name will echo
through the annals of time.
POPE CLEMENT IV
Who do you think will be my
successor?
CARDINAL ORSINI
I do not pretend to be a prophet,
but if I were to speculate...
POPE CLEMENT IV
My life is on the brink of the
ultimate speculation. Give me
facts. Certitude.
CARDINAL ORSINI
There are whispers of Angevin
Cardinals wanting a French Pope at
all costs, while the Ghibelines--
POPE CLEMENT IV
Would rather face death than allow
it. What else is new?
Pope Clement bursts into hacking coughs, his fragile form
strains against the inevitable.
CARDINAL ORSINI
Rest now, Your Holiness.
Preparations are being made for the
election. It should be relatively
pleasant.
Pope Clement sputters between choking and laughter.
POPE CLEMENT IV
Pleasant? In Rome, no place is safe
or pleasant.
CARDINAL ORSINI
In Rome? I meant in Viterbo.
Pope Clement can’t hold back. He erupts in a bewildered
guffaw at Orsini’s brilliant punchline.
POPE CLEMENT IV
Did you say Viterbo? My Viterbo?
3.
CARDINAL ORSINI
Yes, your Holiness. The Papal
palace has been completed and, as
you said, Rome is not safe.
Pope Clement offers an ironic chuckle.
POPE CLEMENT IV
In Viterbo! Amongst the most
stubborn people in all of...
Pope Clement's laughter shifts to violent coughs, then a
startled gasp of delight--and he dies, a wry grin etched on
his face.
Orsini and the bishops exchange puzzled glances.

Morning Interactions
EXT. COUNTRYSIDE - DAY
Nestled on the fringes of the village of Viterbo, a quaint
and endearing cottage awaits.
INT. COTTAGE BEDROOM - MORNING
The morning sun filters through the window, casting a warm
glow on Captain RANIERO GATTI (36) snoozing peacefully. A
rooster's CROW shatters the serenity.
Raniero rubs his eyes and scans the room. The depression in
the bedding beside him and CLATTERING CROCKERY reveal his
better half has begun the day's work.
He stumbles out of bed, throws open the shutters and inhales
the crisp morning air--gazes toward the cathedral spire
peeking over the village rooftops.
Raniero swiftly dons his attire, then settles on the edge of
the bed to lace up his boots.
Suddenly, his vivacious daughters, BELLINA (8) and LUCIDA
(6), burst into the room and launch a playful ambush.
RANIERO
The infantry attacks!
Raniero scoops them into his arms, seats them on his lap.
BELLINA
Can I come with you to the village?
4.
RANIERO
And leave your mother with a
mountain of chores?
BELLINA
We have decided. I will go with
you, and Lucida will stay to help.
LUCIDA
Not fair! I want to go to the
village!
Raniero chuckles at their spirited debate.
RANIERO
It seems we are at a stalemate.
BELLINA
Lucida, you promised! Today is my
turn, tomorrow will be yours!
LUCIDA
But I want today!
RANIERO
Until we sort this out, you two
will stay and help your mother.
Raniero plants kisses on their foreheads, setting them down
on the floor, their pouts slowly turning into curiosity.
LUCIDA
Is the Pope coming?
RANIERO
No, my dear. The Cardinals who will
choose a new Pope. But once the
voting is finished, I promise we
will visit the market and you may
pick any fruit your heart desires.
BELLINA
Apples?
LUCIDA
I want oranges!
Raniero tickles them. The girls shriek with laughter.
RANIERO
Does the infantry surrender?
In strides the radiant MADOLINA (28), holding a steaming cup
of herbal tea in her hand.
5.
MADOLINA
Come on, girls. The first one to
reach the broom sweeps, the other
fetches the eggs.
Both girls bolt out of the room as Raniero stands.
RANIERO
That was easy.
MADOLINA
Everything is a negotiation, with
the right strategy.
Madolina hands Raniero the cup of tea and he takes a sip.
RANIERO
How else could I have convinced
Ofredo the Adamant for your hand?
MADOLINA
Tch. You are too harsh. My father
is as soft as mozzarella--if you
use a subtle approach.
RANIERO
A grandson is as subtle as a
hammer.
MADOLINA
It will happen, my love. We will
just have to keep trying.
Madolina presses up against him. They share a tender kiss.
RANIERO
If we must.
MADOLINA
You are late, as always.
Raniero swigs the tea, sets the cup on the sill, then slips
into his coat. A well-practiced routine.
RANIERO
I am as late as I mean to be. Do
you trust me?
Madolina ties the neck laces for him.
MADOLINA
Always.
One last affectionate kiss and Raniero hurries out the door.

A Day in Viterbo
EXT. COTTAGE - SOON AFTER
Raniero strides out of the house, heading towards the town.
Lucida eyes Raniero with a pout as she collects chicken eggs
from the ground and drops them in a wicker basket.
EXT. VITERBO - DAY
The charming town bustles with life--peasants, merchants, and
the well-to-do. Festival flags dance overhead connect
buildings along the street.
Raniero navigates through the cheerful crowd. Villagers of
all stripes acknowledge him with nods and warm greetings.
Raniero sidesteps a ladder leaning against a wall. He makes a
mano fico gesture at he ladder then glances up at the THIN
VILLAGER securing a festival flag.
RANIERO
Impressive work. Are these the
final ones?
THIN VILLAGER
God willing, unless the Cassano
children decide to mess with them
again. Had to redo it twice!
Raniero smirks, his tone feigned seriousness as he passes by.
RANIERO
They are descendants of Vandals!
Perhaps I should arrest the lot.
The Villager's face brightens at the idea, only to fall when
he realizes it's a jest.
THIN VILLAGER
Do not tease me, Captain Gatti!
At the street market, stalls overflow with goods and wagons
tempt with a tantalizing food. A baker bustles as women
select loaves of bread.
Raniero pauses at a flower stand, plucks a bouquet and tosses
a coin without looking. The merchant catches it.
7.
INT. TAVERN - SOON AFTER
Raniero enters a rustic dining area where stone walls glow
bronze in candlelight. Long wooden tables are set with
promise, but CLANGING POTS AND PANS draw his attention...
THE KITCHEN
Teems with cooks in a dance of organized chaos. An open fire
crackles at the back along with a bulwark of wine barrels.
The formidable and fiery head cook, FRANCESCA, conducts the
culinary symphony with precision.
Raniero enters and places the bouquet in a vase against the
back wall, then approaches the spread of food.
RANIERO
Ah, a feast fit for royalty.
FRANCESCA
Captain Raniero Gatti. Unless you
are here to help, we do not want to
be bothered. Flowers will not
change that today.
RANIERO
Just showing my appreciation for
your hard work, Francesca.
FRANCESCA
I will feel appreciated when this
whole thing is over.
Francesca gestures to each meticulously prepared dish.
FRANCESCA
Quail, duck, two lambs for
Wednesday, pork and chicken for the
rest. All seasoned with verjus,
wine, and vinegar, a hint of black
pepper, saffron, and a dash of
ginger. A touch of honey for that
sweet-sour flavor. Will this last
go longer than a week?
RANIERO
No more than a few days. These are
the wisest men in the Church.
Francesca brow furrows in suspicion.
8.
FRANCESCA
I will send for another week's
ration, should it go longer.
Raniero leans closer to the simmering soup, savors the aroma.
He reaches for a ladle to taste but gets a swift smack on the
hand from Francesca.
FRANCESCA
Are you a cardinal?
RANIERO
Well, Madolina says I look good in
red.
FRANCESCA
Do not push me, Raniero. I am not
to be trifled with today.
Francesca pours a generous serving of wine from a barrel into
a cup and offers it to Raniero. He sips, his expression
shifts to pure satisfaction.
RANIERO
This is... outstanding.
FRANCESCA
It’s for a special moment.
RANIERO
Is this that moment?
FRANCESCA
It will be when you leave.
RANIERO
The sooner I leave, the sooner I
can have the pleasure of returning.
FRANCESCA
Leave--before you have the pleasure
of my fist.
RANIERO
As you command.
Raniero plants a kiss on Francesca's cheek and dashes out.
Francesca's demeanor softens and a smile appears. The staff
notice, their expressions thunderstruck.
FRANCESCA
What are you looking at? Back to
work!

Preparations for Important Guests
EXT. STREET - DAY
Raniero emerges from the vibrant market area and collides
with his father-in-law, DON OFREDO (65), a robust man exuding
devotion to tradition.
RANIERO
Don Ofredo! You are blessing us
with your company for a few days?
DON OFREDO
Against my better judgment. My
back's been aching, and now I must
relinquish my bed to some stranger.
RANIERO
It’s for a noble and holy cause.
The Cardinals value hospitality.
Don Ofredo shakes his head in protest, and Raniero reassures
him with a pat on the shoulder.
DON OFREDO
When will you give me a grandson?
Raniero’s hand turns to a fist then relaxes into another pat
before he moves off.
RANIERO
When God decides to bless us! Oh,
and your granddaughters have been
asking about you.
Don Ofredo’s face twists into a sour expression.
EXT. VITERBO CATHEDRAL - SOON AFTER
An imposing Romanesque structure sits high on the hill where
the city ascends. Carved from creamy limestone, intricate
reliefs adorn its grand entrance.
A serene fountain graces the square, and the imposing bell
tower looms adjacent.
FATHER LUZIO (40), steps out of the cathedral doors,
acknowledging passing townsfolk and noticing Raniero's
hurried approach.
10.
FATHER LUZIO
Have faith, Captain Raniero.
Everything is ready!
RANIERO
Have you blessed the water today,
Father Luzio?
Father Luzio grimaces, raises his eyes skyward for patience
before rushing into the palace.
INT. MAYOR’S RESIDENCE - DAY
Oil paintings adorn the walls above finely crafted chairs at
calculated intervals, with extravagant rugs and furniture
accentuating the grandeur of the room.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO (50), meticulously assesses his reflection
in an oversized mirror.
A female servant, brushes away any trace of lint from his
elegant attire.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Most venerable order of...
He clears his throat, then adopts a more commanding tone.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Most venerable order of the Holy
See, I am Mayor Albertus De
Montebuono...
Raniero is ushered into the room by the housekeeper.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Ah, Raniero. Please, join me.
The Mayor gestures for Raniero to take a seat on the
sumptuous couch. Raniero does so.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Now, where was I?
(lower tone)
Most venerable order of the Holy
See... or perhaps I should say,
most excellent order?
Predicting Raneri’s usual response...
RANIERI GOVERNOR MONTEBONO
Whatever you decide. Whatever I decide.
11.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
You are as reliable as ever,
Raniero. Predictability has its
virtues. It maintains order. That
is why I appreciate you. By the
way, did you happen to notice my
likeness?
Raniero shifts his gaze, then does a double-take.
A grand bust of the Mayor graces a nearby pillar, portraying
him in a more idealized, slender form than the actual man.
RANIERO
An... uncanny likeness, my Lord.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Shocking, is it not?
RANIERO
I dare say it is.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
The sculptor was a Cosmati. No
effort or expense was spared. It
took nearly a year, but it was
worth it.
Montebuono gives a smug smile and turns to allow the servant
to brush the front side of his attire.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Recognition is the ultimate honor
to which a man can aspire, and I am
prepared to soar into its
embrace... is there any reason for
concern? I want to ensure
everything proceeds as planned.
RANIERO
As smoothly as your finest Oriental
silks.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Yes, well, stay vigilant, Captain.
There are always unexpected twists.
We are not accustomed to hosting
such important guests.
Mayor Montebuono shifts back to his reflection in the mirror,
enraptured by it.
12.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Just envision the grand gathering
filling our hamlet. Clergymen,
nobles, maybe even royalty.
RANIERO
Royalty?
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Why yes. Our humble village is an
unconventional place for such a
significant event. How many
Cardinals are we expecting?
RANIERO
Nineteen of the twenty. Cardinal
Rodolphe is too ill to attend.
Despite that, we are short
accommodations for two of them. I
thought perhaps you could offer
your guest rooms.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Hmm, that would be quite an
inconvenience. What about Moretti?
His estate is spacious enough.
RANIERO
Signor Moretti is already
accommodating Cardinal Savelli. It
might not be wise to--
Montebuono places a dominant arm around Raniero’s shoulder.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Captain, you worry too much.
RANIERO
You told me to stay vigilant and be
wary of unexpected twists.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
And this is one of them. So, let
Moretti know he can extend his
hospitality to two more. See,
problem solved.
Raniero hides his irritation behind a polite nod.

Celebration and Tension in Viterbo Cathedral
INT. VITERBO CATHEDRAL - DAY
Sunlight filters through stained glass windows, while
towering columns cradle the vaulted ceiling adorned with
religious art.
The townsfolk and city officials fill the wooden pews,
murmuring in hushed tones. Mayor Montebuono settles at the
front among the city’s consuls.
Raniero addresses the crowd near the elaborate altar.
RANIERO
...My deepest gratitude to each of
you for your tireless efforts in
making all this possible. Many
sacrifices have paved the way. And
Signor Moretti, a special thank you
for your last-minute hospitality
for the cardinals.
Signor Moretti, an aristocratic figure two rows back, simmers
with intense eyes. Mayor Montebuono catches the glare and
turns forward with a satisfied grin.
RANIERO
Remember, the Cardinals will need
privacy during the deliberations.
No eavesdropping, Father Luzio.
Stationed beneath a column, Father Luzio feigns offense at
the insinuation, eliciting amused laughs from the crowd.
From the midst of the assembly, the Thin Villager pipes up.
THIN VILLAGER
I will make sure to save him a spot
next to me in the confessional!
PUDGY LADY
He’ll be saying so many Hail
Mary’s, the Virgin Mother herself
will pray for intercession.
The crowd roars with laughter as Father Luzio's cheeks flush
with embarrassment, crosses himself.
RANIERO
Should direct communication be
necessary, I will serve as
intermediary. Are there any
questions? Concerns?
14.
Silence hangs heavy until a lone voice breaks echoes from the
cathedral's rear.
OLDER VILLAGER
Why should they feast like kings
while we struggle to feed
ourselves?
Montebuono eyes Raniero, anticipating how he'll handle this
objection.
RANIERO
Do not worry, my friends. A well-
fed Cardinal is a decisive one. And
a quick resolution is all we want.
PUDGY MAN
Hope they reach a decision before
dessert disappears!
The crowd laughs and the tension dissipates.
Mayor Montebuono gives Raniero a nod of approval.
EXT. BELL CHAMBER - DAY
A commanding view over the town and valley as dusk falls.
FEDERICO, a young and sharp-eyed bell ringer, peers through a
spyglass. The church bell's rope at his side.
Federico spots a distant speck beyond the city walls and
zeroes in.
SPYGLASS VIEW
The silhouette of a grand caravan emerges. Carriages glide
forth, drawn by majestic horses, guarded by a phalanx of
mounted soldiers.
BACK TO SCENE
Federico drops the spyglass and gives the bell rope an
emphatic tug.
INT. VITERBO CATHEDRAL - DAY
At the peal of the bells, attendees spring to their feet. A
flurry of movement as they hustle towards the exit.
15.
EXT. VITERBO - DAY
A procession of horse-drawn carriages makes its way to the
town's outskirts. The city's sturdy gates rise, granting
passage to them.
Trumpets blare! Citizens erupt into cheers. Mothers and
children shower the carriages with a cascade of flowers.
INT. CARRIAGE - DAY
Two Cardinals sit across from each other, cloaked in their
obligatory red robes.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE (62 yrs), eagled nose and piercing eyes,
discreetly parts the curtains, scrutinizes the jubilant
citizens. He leans back, unmoved.
Cardinal Orsini grins, aware of Pantaleone's thoughts.
CARDINAL ORSINI
You don't like them, do you?
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
I am here only for the Lord's work.
Who I like or don't is of no
consequence.
CARDINAL ORSINI
What is the Lord’s work if not
people?
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
We each have our calling, Orsini.
Yours is to feed the Lord’s flock.
But sometimes their wool must be
cropped, and I make certain we have
the shears.
EXT. MAIN SQUARE - MOMENTS AFTER
Enthusiastic onlookers swarm the perimeter. Madolina with
Bellina and Lucida cheer with the rest.
Mayor Montebuono, Raniero, and Father Luzio form a trio of
grinning statues as the carriages come to a stop.
The Cardinals emerge with their entourage. Orsini leads the
way, blessing the crowd as he goes.
16.
The Cardinals are ushered to the Papal Palace. Montebuono
approaches CARDINAL ODO (80 yrs), a short man clad in somber
black robes. Brisk for his age.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Most venerable order of the Holy
See, I am Mayor Albertus
Montebuono. On behalf of this...
Montebuono draws a blank. Cardinal Odo raises a skeptical
eyebrow.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
...this impeccable town of Viterbo,
I bid you welcome.
CARDINAL ODO
I’m Cardinal Odo of Tusculum, Dean
of the Apostolic See.
Raniero clears his throat.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Ah, yes! This is Captain Raniero
Gatti and...
Raniero whispers into Montebuono’s ear.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
And Father Luzio. Both esteemed
members of Viterbo.
CARDINAL ODO
We have journeyed a long way. I
trust our requests been met?
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Of course they have.
Mayor Montebuono casts a glance to Raniero for support.
RANIERO
Your lodgings are ready. Ten
chambers within the palace, private
residences for the rest. The Papal
Palace is ready for the council,
right Father Luzio?
Father Luzio, awestruck, works his mouth soundlessly until--
FATHER LUZIO
Y-yes, spotless, immaculate. I
personally saw to every detail
myself--
17.
Mayor Montebuono strides forward, reclaiming the spotlight.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
You see? Every detail meticulously
attended to.
CARDINAL ODO
Our focus is essential as we select
our faith's leader. Could we clear
the square to keep our proceedings
undisturbed?
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
It shall be done.
Approaching the Papal church, Father Luzio fumbles in his
robe for the key, retrieves them and unlocks the grand door.
CARDINAL PIRONTI, a rotund mountain of a man, wheezes his way
up the steps and peers inside.
The interior boasts lofty wooden ceilings, expansive windows,
and a vast stone floor. All benches have been removed except
those flanking the windows.
RANIERO
As you can see, there is ample room
for the Cardinals to stretch their
wings. And if greater discretion is
needed, we have a private chamber
in the back.
CARDINAL PIRONTI
The journey was more exhausting
than a sermon on gluttony. Has our
feast been prepared?
RANIERO
The finest delicacies this side of
heaven await you, Your Eminence.
CARDINAL PIRONTI
Marvelous. The Lord frowns upon
empty stomachs.

The Cardinals' Dinner
INT. DINING HALL - EVENING
The Cardinals dine at a lavish table, served by an army of
attendants. Rival factions exchange wary glances while
discussing matters.
Pantaleone swirls his wine with practiced elegance, savors it
like a connoisseur.
18.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
Not bad for these parts of the
country.
CARDINAL DE BRAY, potbellied and jovial, digs into his meal
with gusto. He glances over and spots CARDINAL UBALDINI, bald
and lean, scrutinizing his food.
CARDINAL DE BRAY
Ubaldini, are you expecting your
food to dance?
Ubaldini serves himself a portion of chicken and wheat bread,
forgoing the more extravagant.
CARDINAL UBALDINI
Quail, chicken, they’re all just
naked birds to me.
CARDINAL DE BRAY
Quail is a delicacy. Feels like a
sin not to indulge.
CARDINAL UBALDINI
I have no need for luxury. Just
grateful to have food on the table.
CARDINAL DE BRAY
Mary Magdalene poured the finest
perfume on our Savior’s feet. He
didn't refuse it.
CARDINAL UBALDINI
That was to prepare him for burial.
Are we martyrs in the making here?
CARDINAL DE BRAY
Being around you is reason enough
for an early grave.
Ubaldini’s eyes alight with fury.
CARDINAL ODO
Gentlemen! Let us be grateful to
our hosts and to each other. We can
all partake of what we each like.
Let us embrace our differences.
CARDINAL PALTANIERI, gaunt yet formidable presence, drinks
his entire glass and burps loudly.
CARDINAL PALTANIERI
Perfect. Then let us embrace the
idea of an Italian pope.
19.
Murmurs ripple through the group as accusatory fingers are
pointed.
From a cracked door leading to the kitchen, Francesca spies
the angry Cardinals argue.
INT. CONFESSIONAL - DAY
Francesca sits in the shadowed confessional, opposite Father
Luzio behind the divider.
FRANCESCA
I am surprised they didn’t end up
in a brawl, father.
FATHER LUZIO
It’s shameful to be eavesdropping
on the Cardinals.
FRANCESCA
Shameful? No. What’s shameful is
you using me to do your dirty work.
Father Luzio feigns indignation, clutching his chest
dramatically.
FATHER LUZIO
I'd never breach their trust.
FRANCESCA
You wouldn’t because you’ve been
warned not to, by everyone.
FATHER LUZIO
Small details. What else happened?
FRANCESCA
They squabbled like children.
Stormed off without finishing the
feast I slaved over! Well, Cardinal
Pironti took a couple of plates
with him.
FATHER LUZIO
It's all part of the process.
Conflict breeds character, like a
workout for the soul.
FRANCESCA
Then they are breeding like rabbits
and they must have the endurance of
saints.
20.
A man clears his throat outside the confessional. Francesca
bursts out with a stern gaze.
FRANCESCA
Can't you see I am deep in
confession? Move along!
The man slinks away, crestfallen. Francesca retreats into the
confessional.
FRANCESCA
And I also need forgiveness for
scolding my husband just now.
FATHER LUZIO
Add two Hail Mary's. Meanwhile, let
us keep our nose out of the
Cardinal’s business. But, should
your ears happen to hear more...
FRANCESCA
My confessional tongue will wag.
FATHER LUZIO
Go in peace.
Father Luzio blesses her with a sign of the cross.
INT. PRIEST’S STUDY - EARLY MORNING
The warm glow of candles wards off shadows. A small desk near
a narrow window casts daylight onto a parchment before Father
Luzio, seated in quiet contemplation.
He dips his quill into an inkwell and inscribes a note.
After finishing, he folds and seals the note with wax. He
sets it aside and bows his head.
FATHER LUZIO
Bless me, Father, for I am a humble
sinner with the best intentions.
EXT. VITERBO CATHEDRAL - BACKDOOR - MORNING
A weathered MESSENGER in his forties with a dead white eye,
waits by the cathedral's backdoor. His good eye darts
nervously, hand instinctively on the hilt of his dagger.
The door creaks open, revealing Father Luzio's hand holding
the folded note. The Messenger snatches it and disappears
into the shadows.
21.
EXT. MARKETPLACE - MORNING
In the bustling market, the Messenger glides through the
early morning crowd, his hood pulled to conceal his features.
He stops at the well-stocked stall of a stout FRUIT VENDOR
with a warm smile and rosy cheeks, a basket of fruit nearby.
The Messenger slips the note into the basket without breaking
stride, exchanges a quick, conspiratorial glance with the
vendor as she places an apple over the note.
The Fruit Vendor moves to the edge of the stall and hands the
basket to a YOUNG BOY.
The Young Boy rushes for an alley, basket in hand.
INT. TAILOR’S SHOP - MORNING
The Young Boy darts inside, places the basket on the counter.
The TAILOR, silver-streaked hair and a meticulous eye, picks
up the basket and inspects it. The boy dashes away.
The Tailor finds the note and tucks it into a roll of fabric.
He exits the shop with the fabric under his arm.
EXT. NARROW ALLEY - MORNING
The Tailor strides down the alley, eyes lock onto a squad of
Papal Guards ahead. In a flash, he ducks into a nook...
The guards march past, oblivious. The Tailor slips out and
resumes his brisk pace.
EXT. SIDE STREET - MORNING
A HOODED MAN, tall and imposing, looms in the shadows. The
Tailor strolls by and bumps into him, drops the fabric.
HOODED MAN
Apologies.
The Hooded Man kneels and hands it back, palming the note in
the process. They split in opposite directions.
EXT. CITY GATES - LATE MORNING
The Hooded Man exits the city gates. PIETRO, a rugged
fisherman with a cart and horse, nods to him.
22.
Hooded Man discreetly places the note under a fish in the
Pietro’s cart.
EXT. RANIERO’S COTTAGE - DAY
Pietro approaches the cottage. He dismounts his horse, grabs
the bell from the cart and RINGS.
Raniero emerges from the front door with a beaming smile.
RANIERO
Pietro! You come bearing treasures?
PIETRO
Only the finest.
Pietro rummages in his basket and presents a fish to Raniero.
PIETRO
Pike. Fresh from Lake Vico.
Raniero eagerly takes the fish and notices the hidden note
underneath.
RANIERO
Ah, just what we needed. My wife
will work wonders with this.
Raniero counts out some coins and passes them to Pietro, a
knowing glint in his eye.
INT. RANIERO’S COTTAGE KITCHEN - DAY
Sunlight through a leaded window casts a warm glow on a
rustic stone floor adorned with shelves of earthenware.
Raniero, seated at the table, smiles as he reads a note over
a cup of herbal tea.
As Madolina strolls in with a basket of freshly picked
vegetables, Raniero quickly hides the note beneath his shirt.
Madolina clocks his secretive behavior.
MADOLINA
Playing coy, are we? You know I can
read you as easily as our
daughters.
RANIERO
I am not a little girl.
23.
MADOLINA
No, but they have your guileless
eyes. So, what’s afoot?
RANIERO
Nothing. Enjoying a cup of--
MADOLINA
My herbal tea, I know. But what
else are you hiding?
RANIERO
Merely savoring the moment, my
dear.
She eyes him with suspicion, sets the basket aside and
approaches him playfully.
MADOLINA
Is that all you are doing?
RANIERO
Oh, you are a suspicious woman. You
should deal with this at confession
with Father Luzio.
Madolina corners him against the counter, sets his cup aside.
The chemistry crackles between them as she draws nearer.
MADOLINA
Ah, and what would you confess,
Raniero.
RANIERO
That I... I have responsibilities.
MADOLINA
Shameful.
Their lips meet. Her plan unfolds seamlessly.
RANIERO
I am the custodian of the city's
welfare...
Her fingers dance teasingly under his shirt.
RANIERO
Tasked with ensuring harmony
prevails.
Madolina snatches the note out of his shirt, backs up and
scrutinizes it.
24.
Raniero attempts to reclaim it, but she holds it just out of
reach. Raniero persists, but she playfully dodges his grasp.
MADOLINA
What is it? Perhaps a clandestine
confession of love.
RANIERO
Fine. Read away. Why can I never
hide anything from you?
MADOLINA
Because you are as transparent as
glass.

RANIERO
In this city, information is

MADOLINA

Seems the cardinals aren’t too

RANIERO
Just the initial hiccups, my love.
MADOLINA
Seems closer to strangling than
hiccups.
RANIERO
Standard fare for high-stakes

MADOLINA
And you believe this is the worst

RANIERO
I’m certain. They'll mend matters

Madolina gives him a skeptical glance and a peck on his lips.

MADOLINA
I suppose there’s no need to

Raniero nods as she moves off, then the comment catches up
with him.
RANIERO
Yet?

The Papal Election
EXT. BELL CHAMBER - DAY
Federico peers through a small window, aligning the sun’s
position with the sundial below.
FEDERICO
(murmuring)
Terce hour.
He grasps the rope and pulls. The great bell TOLLS, its
echoes cascading over the town.
INT. PRIVATE CHAMBER - DAY
Orsini adjusts his robes, kisses his pectoral cross and
closes his eyes in prayer.
CARDINAL ORSINI
Grant us your wisdom, Father... for
we have so little of our own.
He hears commotion outside. Curiosity piqued, he moves to the
window for a discreet peek...
ON THE COBBLESTONE ALLEY
A group of Papal Guards stand outside a nearby home, keeping
onlookers at a distance. The front door swings open and
Pantaleone steps out.
The Papal Guards escort him down the alley. He gives the
crowd an indifferent sign of the cross, eliciting cheers.
Orsini looks like he bit into a rotten fig.
CARDINAL ORSINI
So little indeed.
26.
EXT. MAIN SQUARE - DAY
A jubilant crowd gathers, a mix of Papal Guards and local
soldiers form a perimeter to maintain order.
PAPAL GUARD
Clear the way! Clear the way!
More Papal Guards arrive, escorting the Cardinals through the
square toward the Papal Palace, the crowd parting for them.
Raniero and Father Luzio, hidden among the throng, share
optimistic glances.
INT. PAPAL PALACE - DAY
The Cardinals occupy the benches under the windows. At the
front, Odo leads them in prayer.
CARDINAL ODO
Almighty God, grant us wisdom in
this sacred task. May Your Holy
Spirit guide as we select Your
chosen shepherd for Your Church,
setting aside personal ambitions.
CARDINALS
Amen.
CARDINAL ODO
By the authority vested in us by
God and His Holy Church, we vow to
maintain absolute secrecy, to
conduct ourselves with
impartiality, and to seek only the
greater glory of God in the
election of the next pontiff.
EXT. MAIN SQUARE - DAY
Vendors hawk their goods amidst the cheerful townsfolk. Music
and dancing add to the festive atmosphere.
Raniero strolls through the square, absorbing the positive
vibes. Father Luzio joins him with a hint of secrecy.
RANIERO
Any word?
27.
FATHER LUZIO
Not yet. My information-gathering
skills shine brightest under the
cloak of night. We must tread
carefully.
RANIERO
Since when has caution been
paramount virtue?
FATHER LUZIO
True, but these Cardinals are like
slippery eels. Fear not, Captain. I
will uncover their secrets.
A street BOOKMAKER sidles up to Father Luzio, brandishing a
small notebook.
BOOKMAKER
Two to one odds on Cardinal Odo for
the papacy.
FATHER LUZIO
Betting on our next Pontiff? It’s
outrageous! Sacrilege! How dare you
propose such a thing?
Father Luzio glances furtively, then subtly holds up three
fingers and mouths the word, “THREE”.
The Bookmaker nods, jots down Father Luzio's wager then edges
over to Raniero.
BOOKMAKER
And what about you, Captain?
Feeling lucky?
RANIERO
No. I will not tempt fate.
The Bookmaker shrugs and drifts away into the crowd.
INT. PAPAL PALACE - MAIN CHAMBER - DAY
Each cardinal steps forward to deposit their folded ballots
into an ornate box placed on a table at the chamber's center.
MOMENTS LATER
Odo draws each ballot from the box and reads them out.
28.
CARDINAL ODO
Two votes for Ottobono Fieschi.
Four votes for Riccardo Annibaldi.
Four votes for Odo of Tusculum. Two
votes for Ottaviano Ubaldini. Five
votes for Giovanni Gaetano Orsini,
and two for John of Toledo. No
Cardinal has achieved the required
two-thirds majority.
Heavy silence. Suspicious glances dart around the room.
CARDINAL PIRONTI
We have managed to vote for half
the College of Cardinals. Perhaps
we should have a second round for
the other half.
Only Orsini chuckles. The others remain stone-faced.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
And what exactly are you implying?
CARDINAL UBALDINI
I am not implying anything. I am
stating it outright. The French
cardinals and their allies want to
install a puppet to push their
political agendas.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
And I suppose the oh so humble, Il
Cardinale has only the best
intentions by voting for a
gibbering Ghibelline?
The room erupts, protests and accusations. Pironti waves his
massive arms and gets them to quiet.
CARDINAL PIRONTI
Since the last Pope was French,
maybe this one should be Italian.
We could start a new tradition:
Popes by country rotation.
After a stunned silence, the uproar returns with vigor.

A Failed Election and Family Tensions
EXT. MAIN SQUARE - DAY
Many villagers still mill about, but more subdued.
29.
Raniero stands near a fountain, his gaze fixed on the Papal
Palace where muffled shouts of the Cardinals can be heard.
Montebuono strolls over to him.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Sounds like a delightful affair.
Montebuono offers a strained smile before excusing himself.
As Raniero ponders, a foreboding unease takes root.
Hours pass and the celebration fades. The square gradually
empties as people return to their routines...
...By sunset, only a handful of townsfolk linger.
The Cardinals emerge from the Papal Palace flanked by Papal
Guards, and head into the city. The few remaining villagers
spot them and quickly spread the word.
EXT. TOWN HALL - DUSK
In the last rays of the sun, the ancient stone walls decked
with flickering torches loom over the cobblestone square.
INT. TOWN HALL JAIL - NIGHT
Dimly lit. Raniero leans against a sturdy wooden table,
studying parchments as heavy stone walls mute the town's
nightly ruckus.
In the only visible cell is MATTEO, a scruffy local thief in
his twenties.
MATTEO
How long do you plan on keeping me
caged in this rat hole?
RANIERO
As long as you behave like a rat.
MATTEO
Ah, so I borrowed a little
something. What’s the harm in
borrowing?
RANIERO
Borrowing usually implies you
intend to return what you’ve taken.
MATTEO
I would... eventually. But you know
how forgetful I am.
30.
Matteo paces, agitation evident in his movements.
MATTEO
So, any chance of some decent food
in here? Or do I need to pick the
lock to hunt it down myself?
Raniero remains silent, his focus undisturbed.
MATTEO
Oh, right. Fine dining is strictly
for Cardinals and the elite in this
town, isn't it? See, I told you I
was forgetful.
Raniero glances up, the jab hitting its mark.
Suddenly a guard rushes in.
GUARD #1
The Cardinals have come out.
EXT. TOWN HALL - NIGHT
Papal Guards escort three Cardinals, Orsini among them, back
to their residence.
Raniero steps out and blends into the crowd. He locks eyes
with Orsini, discretely seeking information. Orsini's head
shakes slowly--a silent portent of failure.
Raniero nods, a sense of dread washing over him.
His attention is suddenly drawn to a young boy, no older than
four, wandering into the path of an oncoming mounted Papal
Guard. The horse's hooves thundering closer to the child.
Raniero lunges forward and yanks the boy to safety just as
the horse's hooves stomp the ground where the boy stood.
Anger flashes across Raniero’s face as he eyes the guard ride
away, who is unaware of the near-tragedy. He hands the boy
back to his grateful mother in the crowd.
INT. RANIERO'S COTTAGE - NIGHT
Candlelight and the hearth fire illuminate a large table with
plates of fish bones and bread crusts, remnants of a hearty
meal. A lone apple sits beside a wine jug in the fruit bowl.
31.
Don Ofredo presides at the head of the table with Raniero and
Madolina beside him, the girls opposite. Raniero refills
Ofredo’s goblet, who savors his wine with closed eyes.
DON OFREDO
If you'd poured this wine ten years
ago, I might've handed over my
daughter's heart without a second
thought.
RANIERO
I am thrilled it pleases you... so,
it was my persuasion that convinced
you then.
Raniero shoots Madolina a playful smirk. She meets his gaze,
points at herself and silently mouths, "I did so."
DON OFREDO
Heavens no. The day I saw you chase
down that thief in the market, I
knew you could manage the town's
affairs—-and safeguard my daughter.
Raniero lifts his goblet for a toast, blocking Don Ofredo’s
view, and mouths, “it was me.”
RANIERO
To our beautiful family and the
smooth success of the election.
The adults clink their wine and drink, while the girls join
in with their water, mirroring the toast.
The girls eye the last apple in the bowl. Lucida reaches for
it but stops under Madolina's stern gaze, withdraws her hand.
DON OFREDO
Yes, and for success, maintaining
peace is essential. We must have
stability during these times. The
eyes of the world are upon us.
BELLINA
Father, what does a Cardinal do?
LUCIDA
I know! They're here to choose a
new pope!
Raniero nods with a smile.
32.
RANIERO
That is right, Lucida. But it’s
also a time when we must all be on
our best behavior.
MADOLINA
That means you two as well. No more
squabbling over the last apple.
She picks up the apple, slices it in half and hands each girl
their share. Bellina beams, while Lucida pouts.
DON OFREDO
Speaking of behavior, Raniero, how
do you plan to handle any
disturbances? The town must be
under strict watch.
RANIERO
I’ve already increased the patrols.
We’ll maintain order, Don Ofredo.
MADOLINA
Father, did you hear? Bellina
helped me make bread today. She’s
becoming quite the little cook.
BELLINA
Yes, Grandfather! I even kneaded
the dough all by myself.
Don Ofredo’s expression softens, smiles at his granddaughter.
DON OFREDO
Well done, Bellina. Perhaps one day
you will teach your brother—-
He stops himself abruptly realizing his slip.
LUCIDA
See, he still wants a boy.
MADOLINA
That is enough, Lucida. Your father
and I are blessed with you two, and
that is what matters.
RANIERO
And we will continue to be grateful
for every blessing we receive.
DON OFREDO
Yes, yes. But a son would be...
traditional.

33.
DON OFREDO (CONT'D)
I just hope the election brings us
an Italian pope, who understands
the importance of family and
tradition.
Madolina fumes. She rises, snatching up her plate.
MADOLINA
Girls, come assist me in finishing
your grandfather's room.
The girls gather their plates and trail after Madolina,
leaving the two men in an awkward silence.
Raniero observes a hint of regret in Don Ofredo's expression,
pours more wine in their goblets. They clink and drink.

The Escape
INT. DINING HALL - NIGHT
The Cardinals eat in silence, adversarial glances darting
around the room.
Pantaleone scrutinizes the Italians, his expression shifting
to distinguish threats from fools.
Ubaldini stabs his humble chicken meal with force. As he
slices, the knife grinds on the plate with a SCREECH. The
French cardinals glare at him.
De Bray retorts with an ECHOING SLURP of wine.
Paltanieri counters with a dramatic COUGH.
Orsini shakes his head with parental disapproval.
Pironti turns his attention to De Bray with a hopeful smile.
CARDINAL PIRONTI
Simon, could you pass me some
bread?
De Bray snatches up the bread and hurls it at Pironti's soup,
the bread landing with a resounding SPLASH.
CARDINAL DE BRAY
Certainly, Gio. Enjoy.
Pironti wipes the mess from his face with a resigned sigh.
CARDINAL PIRONTI
Ah, De Bray, your aim is almost as
sharp as your wit.
34.
The cardinals continue to mutter and exchange heated glances.
Paltanieri flicks a grape, hits De Bray on the nose.
CARDINAL PALTANIERI
How’s that for aim?
The room erupts into a brawl! The elderly men of the cloth
fight clumsily, hurling chairs, throwing shaky punches, and
shake off the pain.
De Bray charges at Ubaldini. With a triumphant belly thrust,
he catapults the hapless cleric across the room.
Pironti snatches a metal dish and clocks De Bray over the
head with a resounding CLANG. De Bray wobbles and falls.
Suddenly Odo bursts into the room, his expression thunderous.
CARDINAL ODO
Cardinals! Stop this madness!
The fighting gradually ceases under Odo’s glare.
Paltanieri looks up with lettuce draped across his face.
CARDINAL PALTANIERI
What? Even our Savior once
violently flipped tables in a fit
of rage.
CARDINAL ODO
Our Savior was outraged at sin and
corruption. This is mere petulance.
De Bray stumbles to his feet, wincing as he holds his head.
CARDINAL DE BRAY
Divine actions sometimes unfold
in... unexpected ways.
CARDINAL ODO
And so does arrogance. Do not
presume any leniency. At dawn, you
will all be on your knees in
penance before we even consider
deliberation.
Odo storms out, followed by the Cardinals one by one.
Francesca tiptoes inside, views with disbelief the chaos the
Cardinals left.

INT. VITERBO CATHEDRAL - EARLY MORNING

Twelve Cardinals stand in line for the confessional booth,
showcasing bruises, swollen lips, and one with a black eye as
they pivot towards her entrance.
The few who have confessed are scattered throughout the
sanctuary, deeply immersed in penance.
Father Luzio emerges from the confessional, spots Francesca.
With a shrug, he heads to the Lavobo and splashes water on
his face--returns to the confessional.
Francesca settles on the back pew to wait her turn.
FRANCESCA
(to herself)
What pit have we fallen into?
INT. PRIEST’S STUDY - MORNING
Father Luzio feverishly scribbles down last night's events.
The notes have multiplied dramatically.
His pen runs dry. He rummages through his desk, finds more
ink and resumes writing.
EXT. VITERBO CATHEDRAL - BACKDOOR - MORNING
The Messenger waits by the door, as anxious as ever.
The door creaks open, revealing Father Luzio handing over a
thick bundle of notes to the Messenger, who feels its
unexpected weight.
MESSENGER
This will not be as easy. A bulkier
package means higher risks.
Father Luzio’s hand reappears clutching a few coins. The
Messenger snatches them and slips away into the shadows.
36.
EXT. MARKETPLACE - DAY
The Messenger weaves through the crowd, scanning for danger.
He spots a few Soldiers heading in the same direction.
He sneaks to the Fruit Vendor and subtly tilts his head in
the direction of the Soldiers. Her eyes shift.
The Soldiers amble closer, surveying the masses.
The Messenger feigns interest in nearby trinkets. Once the
soldiers move away, he swiftly drops the package into the
fruit basket.
INT. TAILOR’S SHOP - DAY
The Young Boy rushes inside. He places the basket on the
counter.
The Tailor picks up the basket and inspects the contents. The
boy dashes away.
The Tailor finds the notes inside and tucks them into a
bulkier roll of fabric, exits with the fabric under his arm.
EXT. NARROW ALLEY - DAY
The Tailor treads vigilantly but unbeknownst to him...
The head of the Papal Guard, the CAPTAIN GENERAL, clocks him.
He squints with suspicion, trails the Tailor at a distance.
EXT. SIDE STREET - DAY
The Tailor arrives at the designated spot, glances around.
He makes a turn when a firm hand snatches his arm! The
Captain General looms over him, glowering.
CAPTAIN GENERAL
Caught you in the act, old man?
TAILOR
Merely dropping off some cloth for
Miss Eleonora, sir.
CAPTAIN GENERAL
Oh, is that so? Do you always make
deliveries like you are tiptoeing
through a viper's nest?
37.
TAILOR
Oh, I have very painful bunions.
Makes walking a dreadful chore. I
am sure you know what I’m--
The Captain General yanks the roll of fabric and unfurls
it... but the notes have vanished.
TAILOR
Finest in the city. And at a steal,
might I add. Come to my shop, I
could measure you for a tunic.
The Captain General begrudgingly hands back the fabric.
CAPTAIN GENERAL
Move along.
The Captain General strides away. The Tailor clutches his
chest, gasping for air--spies in the opposite direction.
Behind a corner, the Hooded Man emerges, exchanging glances
with the Tailor before concealing the notes in his cloak's
folds. He swiftly moves down the street.
INT. PAPAL PALACE - DAY
Cardinals cluster in twos and threes, whispering in furtive
tones, casting suspicious glances around the room.
Orsini huddles with Ubaldini and Paltanieri. Pantaleone
strides over and murmurs into Orsini’s ear. Orsini nods.
CARDINAL ORSINI
Forgive me, I am being summoned.
Orsini trails Pantaleone into the next room.
CARDINAL PALTANIERI
By the devil himself.
CARDINAL UBALDINI
Let us not be so bitter. Satan
thrives on our division.
CARDINAL PALTANIERI
Did he not sway the Apostle Peter
to deny Christ three times?
Ubaldini considers this, shifts his gaze toward where Orsini
and Pantaleone disappeared.
38.
SACRISTY CHAMBER
Dimly lit, adorned with vestments and sacred vessels. Tall,
ornately carved wooden cabinets line the walls.
Pantaleone and Orsini step inside and lock eyes.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
So, you managed to escape from
getting bruised.
CARDINAL ORSINI
Quarreling is not for me, your
Eminence.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
You are a wise man, Orsini. Let us
hope you bring that wisdom to our
decision.
CARDINAL ORSINI
If you wish to sway me, save your
breath. I will make my own
decision.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
Just curious, really. Fieschi
mentioned he's backing Odo.
Orsini turns with a look of surprise.
CARDINAL ORSINI
He has?
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
Apparently, his time as Papal
Legate in the French court worked
wonders. His dealings with King
Louis IX paid off handsomely.
CARDINAL ORSINI
Even so, I will seek divine
guidance on my vote.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
Orsini, open your eyes to the world
around us.
The two Cardinals face the main chapel and see a scattered
groups of Cardinals in private, intense conversations.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
What do you see?
39.
CARDINAL ORSINI
A house divided.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
Yes, and such division cannot
endure... I never inquired, did you
find your tenure in Cosmedin
satisfying?
CARDINAL ORSINI
Divine. Many souls were brought to
the faith.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
I am pleased it was fruitful. Your

France are a legacy that won't be
forgotten.

Sparse yet purposeful, a sturdy desk hosts phalanxes of
handwritten reports. Tapestries depicting epic clashes adorn

Raniero, hunched over his desk, studies parchments with

visibly flustered.
BURLY GUARD
Captain Gatti, excuse me, but we

RANIERO
Unless it’s an army at the gates,

BURLY GUARD
There is a small issue in the
barracks.
RANIERO
Is Luca still snoring?
40.
BURLY GUARD
No, Captain. Well, yes, I have
heard pigs slaughtered more
quietly, but that is not the issue.
The new recruits can't decide who
gets the top bunks, and it's
turning into quite the row.
RANIERO
Bunk disputes? Truly? Yes, this is
critical. Have them draw straws or
something. Tell them if I have to

sleeping on the floor.
The Burly Guard nods and briskly exits.
Just then Bellina and Lucida rush inside. They each latch
onto one of his legs. Madolina in tow, carries a straw bag
filled with fresh fruit.
RANIERO
An infantry invasion! My defenses

BELLINA
We bought more apples and oranges.
He scoops up the girls, plants a kiss on each forehead, then
strolls to Madolina. He looks at her questioningly before
stealing a quick peck on her lips.
MADOLINA
I needed to step out for a

Raniero takes her hand, sensing the root of her distress.
RANIERO
Your father's old-fashioned, sure,
but he means well.
MADOLINA
Yes, I know. I just hope he can
tone down his lectures while he
stays with us.
Bellina notices the reports on his desk.
BELLINA
What are those?
41.
RANIERO
Witness reports. It's crucial to
maintain records of all events,
should they ever be in question.
LUCIDA
Father, can we explore the palace
today? Please?
RANIERO
Father has serious matters to
attend to, and the Cardinals are
there, deep in discussion.
MADOLINA
Oh, that reminds me...
Madolina reaches into the basket and retrieves the notes from
Father Luzio. Alarmed, Raniero takes them, hurries to the
door and shuts it.
Raniero unfurls the top note, scanning its contents.
MADOLINA
It’s going wonderfully, like you
said. It makes the Battle of
Benevento seem mild.
Raniero arches an eyebrow at her, catching her tone.
RANIERO
So it seems... but you shouldn’t be
carrying these, it's risky.
MADOLINA
If you want to keep trouble away
from us, maybe they shouldn't be
sent to our doorstep either.
RANIERO
True. I’ll find another way.
SHOUTS and WHISTLES echo from the street as Raniero peers out
the window to see: Papal Guards escort the Cardinals through
a gauntlet of townsfolk.
RANIERO
Come on, let us have a look.
Raniero drops the notes inside a large chest by the wall,

KING CHARLES
Ready to talk, or shall we heat

PRISONER
Please, no more! I beg you!
King Charles inches closer with a quiet, intimidating tone.

Locals engage in their morning routines without cheerfulness.
OUTSIDERS with lavish attire and entitled demeanor, barge

A BURLY OUTSIDER with a pox-scarred face and a missing tooth,
throws a half-eaten orange back onto the Fruit Vendor’s cart,
splattering juice across the display.
Further down the square, a TALL WOMAN impatiently waits at a
bread stall. When she gets her bread, she tears off a piece
and throws it to the ground with a dismissive grunt.
Nearby, an OUTSIDER with a shaved head and a tattoo on his

woman's shoes. She shoots him a disgusted look, hurries away.
Raniero observes the scene with dismay.
INT. PODESTA PALACE - RANIERO’S QUARTERS - DAY
In a vulturine crouch at his desk, Raniero feels the weight

The Burly Guard storms in, snapping a salute, a note clutched

BURLY GUARD
There is a small problem in the

RANIERO
I will be right there.
The Burly Guard nods, salutes sharply, and exits.
Raniero opens the note from Father Luzio. It reads, "Same as

Opening the large chest, he reveals it nearly brimming with
notes, most carrying the same message. He tosses the latest
one in, shuts the chest and locks it with a sigh.
46.
Shouts erupt outside, louder this time. Perturbed, Raniero
moves to the window and sees...
EXT. COURTYARD - DAY
Villagers swirl in a heated dispute. At the center, a furious
MERCHANT stands toe-to-toe with an enraged FARMER.
Nearby, a wheelbarrow lies on its side, fruits and vegetables
scattered across the cobblestones.
MERCHANT
You ruined my goods! How am I
supposed to sell this now?
FARMER
You ran over my foot! This is your
fault!
The Farmer shoves the Merchant. The two men collide and
wrestle to the ground.
More villagers gather. Children cling to their mothers, older
men shake their heads in disapproval.
RANIERO (O.S.)
Enough!
Raniero pulls the Merchant off the Farmer. The boiling crowd
quiets to a simmer. Raniero steps forward, eyes flicker
between the two men.
RANIERO
This arguing solves nothing. You,
assist with the wheelbarrow. And
you, ensure the goods are salvaged.
Both men step back from each other. The crowd disperses.
Raniero watches them go, the weight of unrest heavy on his
shoulders.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO (PRE-LAP)
I've seen you upset in days past...
INT. MONTEBUONO'S QUARTERS - PODESTA PALACE - DAY
On the walls, rich tapestries depicting major battles hang
alongside a colorful map of the Italian peninsula. A large
fireplace crackles in the corner.
47.
Mayor Montebuono sits behind his desk, reviewing and signing
documents. He glances up at a dour Raniero on the other side.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
But you bear the look of a mourner
at his own funeral.
Montebuono picks up another document to review.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
The election, yes. It's quite the
endurance test. But endurance
builds character. Isn't that what
we have been taught in mass?
RANIERO
The situation is dire. Fights have
broken out. Francesca is stretched
thin, catering to upscale banquets
while our own people go hungry.
Outsiders flood the town, testing
our ability to maintain order. We
need more resources.
Montebuono signs the document with a flourish and sets it
aside, reaching for the next one.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
The Cardinals are our guests. Their
comfort ensures Viterbo’s honor and
reputation. Reputation is a fragile
thing.
RANIERO
Peace is fragile! We can’t endure a
prolonged election.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
A few scuffles are natural,
Raniero. But consider this, the
longer the election, the more
attention Viterbo gets. Attention
brings opportunity. Wouldn’t it be
thrilling to find our name on a map
without the use of a magnifying
glass?
Montebuono points to the map, an elegant piece owing more to
artistry than cartographic accuracy.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Such an exquisite work. I
commissioned it from--
48.
RANIERO
Gervase of Ebstorf, I know...
Mayor, these aren’t just minor
scuffles. Something must be done.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
What do you suggest we do, prayer?
Incarceration? Crucifixion has been
extinct for centuries but I suppose
we could dust it off.
Raniero shakes his head at Montebuono’s sarcasm.
RANIERO
Nothing comes to mind... yet.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
We can’t afford any missteps. Their
comfort is our priority, so things
must continue as they are. You are
good at managing, Raniero. I know
you can handle this.
Montebuono rises and paces over to Raniero.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
A small sacrifice on our part, and
we gain abundantly. You wouldn’t
want to disrupt that, would you?
RANIERO
No, Mayor. But--
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
In the end we’ll emerge stronger,
and you’ll have shown remarkable
leadership.
Raniero drops his gaze, defeated.
RANIERO
Whatever you decide.

Orsini shuffles past the Podesta Palace, escorted by two

Raniero opens the front door and steps inside. He looks

RANIERO
Madolina!
Silence. Raniero moves into the dining area. Don Ofredo sits
alone, a glass of herbal tea by his side.
RANIERO
Where’s everyone?
DON OFREDO
Madolina is outside. Bellina and
Lucida--
The girls suddenly dash past Raniero, shrieking as they chase
each other, and disappear. Raniero's shouts are futile.
Raniero turns to the window with its shutters open. He spots
the shed outside.
DON OFREDO
Any improvement, Raniero?
Don Ofredo’s expression and tone reek of disappointment.
Raniero avoids meeting his gaze, strides out.

Sturdy, with weathered wooden walls and a slanted roof.
Streams from the afternoon sun filter inside.
Madolina collects eggs from the nesting boxes and places them

The door creaks open as RANIERO slides inside.
50.
RANIERO
Madolina, why are you fetching
eggs? That is the girls chore.
MADOLINA
They're in a crisis. Bellina’s done
sharing things with Lucida, and
Lucida... well, Lucida wants
everything to herself.
RANIERO
Let me help you.
Raniero takes the basket and deftly gathers the eggs.
RANIERO
I’ll have a word with them.
MADOLINA
If you could make this election go

Madolina's shoulders slump, weariness in her eyes.
MADOLINA
Everyone blames us. I know they do.
Every trip I take to town, I feel
their stares.
RANIERO
It’s unjust. We are all suffering.
Raniero puts a hand on her shoulder. She clutches it, turning
to face him, holding his hand to her chest.
RANIERO
I just wish there was more I could

refuses to see the urgency and
insists on appeasing the Cardinals,
regardless of the cost.

Interrupted Passion and a Generous Offer
INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT
Under the sheets, Raniero and Madolina entwine themselves in
a passionate embrace, bare and vulnerable. Their faces show
none of the weariness of the day, only love and desire.
A loud THUD against the wall interrupts their passion. The
girls' SCREAMS are heard from their room.
RANIERO
Bellina! Lucida! Go to sleep now!
51.
The commotion subsides. Raniero sighs deeply.
MADOLINA
We are all swept up in this

INT. TAVERN - DAY
A frenzy of food preparation. Pots clang. Francesca, flushed
and precise, finishes a lavish banquet spread.
Raniero steps inside, surveying the scene.
FRANCESCA
Unless you've brought good news,
Captain Gatti, I have no time for
flattery.
RANIERO
Gatti? Using my last name now? You
only did that once when—
FRANCESCA
When you volunteered my kitchen for

FRANCESCA

Francesca shakes her head, frustrated.
FRANCESCA
I am drained, Raniero. Every day,

RANIERO
Surely you’ve been compensated.
52.
FRANCESCA
Oh, we have. But life’s not just

RANIERO
You are not just feeding Cardinals,
Francesca. You are feeding men who

Francesca eyes him skeptically, phlegmatic as ever.
RANIERO
We can’t do this without you,

Her eyes widen, sparkling with delight... but it fades.
FRANCESCA
Why would do that? I’m only a cook.

Tensions in Viterbo Town Square
EXT. VITERBO TOWN SQUARE - AUTUMN - DAY
Autumnal leaves fall from the trees that line the square.
Townsfolk engage in their daily routines. An abundance of
market stalls overflow with seasonal produce.
Laughing children kick up leaves as they chase each other.
53.
EXT. VITERBO TOWN SQUARE - WINTER - DAY
A blanket of snow covers the ground. The skeletal branches of
trees grasp for the stone gray sky.
Weary townsfolk, bundled in heavy cloaks, trudge along past a
scattering of sparsely stocked market stalls.
Children, faces flush from the cold, slide on icy patches
with occasional shrieks and restrained laughter.
The Cardinals pass stolid soldiers as they enter the Papal
Palace. Their breaths trail from their mouths like smoke.
EXT. VITERBO TOWN SQUARE - SPRING - DAY
Lush green leaves fill the trees and flowers produce vibrant
blooms.
The townsfolk don't match the season as they go about their
business with resigned faces. Despite well-stocked stalls and
a crowd, conversations remain muted.
Listless children squat in a circle playing a game.
A stray dog wanders through the square, unnoticed.
The tavern shows signs of wear and seems strangely quiet.
The Papal Guards stand cockeyed, apathetic to their duties.
INT. GUILD HALL - NIGHT
Expansive. Local banners hang from the walls. Flickering
torches cast shadows across the room. Agitated townsfolk pack
the space roiling with discontent.
Raniero and Montebuono face the angry mob at the front on a
makeshift stage.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
I understand your frustrations, and
rest assured, we are pressing hard
to speed up the election process.
The atmosphere thickens as an OLD MAN’S voice cuts through
the murmurs of the crowd.
OLD MAN
Pressing hard? More like nudging
with a feather! How much longer can
we endure this?
54.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Rushed decisions rarely lead to
good outcomes.
A WORN WOMAN stands, holding a crying baby.
WORN WOMAN
The Cardinals eat like kings while

A FIERY MAN steps forward, shaking his fist.
FIERY MAN
Outsiders have brought nothing but
trouble. We can't even walk the
streets safely anymore!
The crowd roars in agreement. Montebuono raises his hands to
calm them.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Please, everyone. The Cardinals are
aware and are working tirelessly to
reach a decision.
A MIDDLE-AGED WOMAN with a stern expression pushes her way to
the front.
MIDDLE-AGED WOMAN
Tirelessly? Seems more like
stalling to us. Half my head is
gray from all this waiting!
Raniero steps forward.
RANIERO
Stalling implies we are standing
still. We are navigating
treacherous waters, not wading in
shallow ponds.
MIDDLE-AGED WOMAN
Are you for the town, Captain? Or
the Cardinals?
RANIERO
I stand with you, always.
A YOUNG WOMAN with tired eyes yells from the back.
YOUNG WOMAN
Then what are you going to do to
make this right?
55.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
We are negotiating with the Holy
See for more resources. We have
requested additional aid to
alleviate the burden.
OLD MAN
We do not want negotiations. We
need action! Give us a Pope and
give us back our town!
The crowd roars in agreement. Raniero's gaze shifts to
Montebuono, who seems to shrink as he slinks backward.

The Delegation from King Charles
INT. VITERBO CATHEDRAL - MORNING
The cathedral stands silent and grandiose. Raniero kneels at
the central pew, head bowed and eyes shut tight.
RANIERO
Father, I am a simple man with
simple thoughts... show me a sign
and guide me through this storm. I
will do what you ask of me.
FATHER LUZIO (O.S.)
Sometimes, God speaks loudest in
the silence.
Father Luzio settles into the seat beside Raniero.
FATHER LUZIO
He grants us wisdom to navigate
these storms, rather than a sign
from heaven.
RANIERO
Eavesdropping on my prayers, Father
Luzio? Not surprised in the least.
FATHER LUZIO
We all have our weaknesses and our
strengths.
RANIERO
And what is your strength?
FATHER LUZIO
Passing on clandestine messages,
among others.
Raniero smiles but it quickly fades.
56.
RANIERO
I don't know what mine is anymore.
I have disappointed so many.
Father Luzio pauses, his expression thoughtful.
FATHER LUZIO
I have seen other Captains come and
go. You are the first one to care
enough to ask that question,
Raniero. That is your strength.
Suddenly, distant trumpets echo through the vaulted ceilings.
Raniero exchanges a quick glance with Father Luzio before
they hurry off.
EXT. PORTA ROMANA GATES - DAY
The perimeter wall stands tall and proud. Built from rugged
stone, it weaves around the town like a guardian serpent.
A crowd gazes at a scene beyond the gate. Raniero arrives,
with Father Luzio close behind.
Beyond the city walls, a tent city has sprouted. Banners
flutter in the wind. Over the largest tent, a grand standard
bearing the coat of arms of Charles of Anjou flaps grandly.
Knights clad in shining armor ride about, their pennons and
banners whipping in the breeze.
FATHER LUZIO
Are we under siege?
RANIERO
I certainly hope not.
At those words, a delegation of knights led by Alard, gallop
towards the gates and stop at the entrance.
ALARD
Who is in charge here?
Raniero steps forward.
RANIERO
I am Raniero Gatti, Captain of the
people.
ALARD
I am Alard De Valery, steward to
King Charles of Anjou.

His Majesty is prepared to wait as

Mayor Montebuono arrives, wheezing and heaving. He bows
before the delegation. He rises then bends again, hands on
his knees, gulping air.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
I am... Alberto Montebuono... mayor
of this esteemed--
Without a word, Alard and his men wheel their horses around
and thunder back toward the encampment.
Montebuono blinks then looks at Raniero in befuddlement.

The Cardinal's Ultimatum
EXT. DARK ALLEYWAY - NIGHT
The Captain General and two Papal Guards secretly escort a
hooded figure, cautiously peering around corners.
They proceed to a small eastern gate where two local Soldiers
lean against the wall, half asleep and slightly intoxicated.
The Captain General and the others move towards the gate.
The Guard with a rat-like face nods lazily, then snaps awake
as he hears their approach. He grips the hilt of his sword.
SOLDIER
Who goes there! No one enters or
leaves at this hour!
In a flash, the Captain General draws his sword, holding the
tip right up to the Guard’s chin.
58.
CAPTAIN GENERAL
We just need some fresh air.
The Guard instantly sobers up, fear widening his eyes.
SOLDIER
A fine evening for it.
The Captain General grins, and they proceed past the gate.
The Soldiers’ gaze is drawn towards something on the ground.
INT. KING CHARLES’S TENT - NIGHT
Two oil lamps hang from poles at opposite ends. The hooded
figure is escorted in, pulls back his hood: Cardinal
Pantaleone.
King Charles stands facing away, his posture tense with
anticipation. He turns to face the Cardinal.
KING CHARLES
Well?
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
It's been... a challenging task to
fulfill.
KING CHARLES
When I entrusted you with this, I
expected results.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
The Cardinals are deeply divided
and rigid in their stance.
KING CHARLES
The one thing I've learned is that
if something, or someone, isn't
working as intended, I simply
dispose of it.
Pantaleone is visibly taken aback by the threat.
KING CHARLES
I have executed two men in the past
month. A third won't make a
difference.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
If you dare commit such a
blasphemous act, you would-
59.
KING CHARLES
Condemn my own soul? Cardinal, you
know me so little. I fear not
damnation. What I fear is failure.
King Charles paces in thought and gestures emphatically.
KING CHARLES
Do you grasp the gravity of
kingship? What it demands of us?
If merely ruling were the pinnacle,
we'd find solace within our
castles.
He settles on his seat, contemplative.
KING CHARLES
I can’t merely remain King of
Sicily. Every monarch must expand
their territories, conquer new
lands. It's our destiny. I require
a Pope who will endorse my
ambitions.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
And where do you plan to expand?
KING CHARLES
The Byzantine empire. Michael is
weak. There is ample territory
there to occupy.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
I may have a way to sway more
Cardinals. But it won’t be easy
nor... ethical.
KING CHARLES
Ethics are the diversion of a
effete and complacent aristocracy.
Do your worst, Cardinal.
Pantaleone bows his head respectfully and the guards escort
him out of the tent.

Interest piqued, Raniero continues tracking Orsini until he

INT. ABANDONED STOREROOM - NIGHT
A few scattered candles feebly chase away the shadows in the
cramped and dusty space. A wooden table stands at the center,
surrounded by mismatched chairs.
Sitting in those chairs, an enthusiastic Raniero, Montebuono,
and a few city officials, weigh the current situation.
RANIERO
Cardinal Odo was only two votes shy
of being elected pope. Two votes!
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
What could it mean?
RANIERO
It means hope. The end of this
prolonged nightmare might be near,
and we must be ready.
A BALDING OFFICIAL with a scar trailing from his temple to
his jaw, leans forward.
BALDING OFFICIAL
Ready for what? It seems like they
are near a resolution.
RANIERO
Which is why we must be even more
vigilant! Hopes and dreams are
never more fragile than when they
are close to fruition. Keeping the
peace, and most importantly,
keeping this information solely
between us is crucial.
An BEARDED OFFICIAL with a missing tooth nods in agreement.
BEARDED OFFICIAL
Raniero is right. If word gets out,
it could cause a frenzy. The higher
the expectations, the farther there
is to fall. The unrest could
explode into a riot.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
This will not be easy. Gossip flows
as easily as wine through the
people’s lips.
62.
RANIERO
Then let us do everything in our
power to maintain order. Surely
this won’t continue much longer.
A BUSHY EYEBROWS OFFICIAL rubs his chin thoughtfully.
BUSHY EYEBROWS OFFICIAL
You’ve said that before. If the
election drags on, what then?
RANIERO
I doubt that’s the case. Let this
glimpse of an end give us the
strength to persevere. We must hold
this city together a little longer.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Just imagine, a new Pontiff
selected in our very own town under
my very own mayorship.
Raniero eyes Montebuono with concern.

Father Luzio.
BOOKMAKER
Three to one odds on Cardinal Odo.
Two to one on Cardinal De Bray.
FATHER LUZIO

Father Luzio discretely signals for two, the Bookmaker notes

The Papal Guards and Cardinals arrive at the square, pressing

63.
Suddenly, jeers erupt from the villagers as rotten vegetables
and fruits fly, splattering the Cardinals' robes!
VILLAGER #1
We don't want a French Pope!
VILLAGER #2

The Captain General assumes a defensive stance. A large fruit
explodes against his face as the hailstorm of rotten produce

The Papal Guards form a protective circle around the
Cardinals and forge ahead towards the Papal Palace.
The sea of villagers parts, but continue their barrage of
insults and projectiles until the guards reach the safety of
the palace walls.
With a final push, they rush the Cardinals inside, closing
the heavy doors behind them.

INT. PAPAL PALACE - MAIN CHAMBER - DAY
Cardinals stand in clusters, their once-regal robes now
splattered with food. The villagers' uproar echoes outside.
Odo wipes fruit pulp from his face. He surveys his brethren
with evident disapproval.
CARDINAL DE BRAY
Good heavens Pironti, were you
attacked or did you just have a
snack on the way?
CARDINAL PIRONTI
Such a waste of perfectly good
food.
64.
Pironti picks off a mystery vegetable and almost tastes it
before dropping it to the floor.
CARDINAL UBALDINI
You are fortunate to have your

CARDINAL DE BRAY
While you are the very image of
Joseph and his coat of many colors,
Ubaldini.
CARDINAL ODO
Quiet! This is a matter of grave
concern.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
There must be a Judas among us. How

Odo’s near ascension?
CARDINAL PALTANIERI
If there is any Judas among us, he
must belong to the Angevins!
The two sides exchange heated accusations and insults.
CARDINAL ODO
Silence! Enough of this folly!
The room gradually falls quiet as Cardinal Odo's glare
pierces through the Cardinals.
CARDINAL ODO
A wretched assembly of scoundrels
this is. Now I know what Purgatory
must resemble...
Odo paces in thought, then stops decisively...
CARDINAL ODO
I will make it easier for you all.
Despite the support I have
garnered, I withdraw my name from
the candidacy.
Murmurs of shock ripple through the group.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
But Cardinal, surely there must be
another way--
65.
CARDINAL ODO
What purpose would it serve? I’m
too advanced in years for this. If
I were to pass in a year or lose my
wits, you will all be back in this
dismal chamber for yet another
election. I cannot allow that.
Heaven forbid that a man be aware
of his own flaws.
Odo surveys the Cardinals with a shrewd, calculating gaze.
CARDINAL ODO
But I will ensure that we bring
this election to a close. Fetch the
Captain.
De Bray peers outside and beckons the Captain General, who
enters and bows respectfully.

RANIERO

BALDING OFFICIAL
Seems our oath wasn't the shield we
thought it to be.
RANIERO
No one outside this chamber knew.
Could there be a spy among us?
66.
BEARDED OFFICIAL
Just as we have our own spies on

BUSY EYEBROWS OFFICIAL
Such is the game of politics.
BALDING OFFICIAL
Your words sound like excuses for

BUSY EYEBROWS OFFICIAL
Are you pointing finger at me? I

BEARDED OFFICIAL
I honored my word as well!
Raniero zeros in on Montebuono. The strangely silent Mayor
stares at the table, avoiding eye contact.
RANIERO
Do you have something to confess,
Mayor?
Montebuono hesitates, then finally speaks, his voice heavy
with regret.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Last night, in my drunkenness, I...
may have confided in my wife.
Raniero rubs his face in frustration.
RANIERO
This has set us back immensely...
let us pray it doesn't derail the a

Mayor Montebuono rises, brushes off the dust from his tunic.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Captain, your concern is
unwarranted. I shall refrain from

Raniero watches helplessly as Montebuono makes his way to the

The Mayor whips around in shock. The City Officials turn to

and made to confess the other
names.
Raniero whirls on the Tailor, grabs his arm and shakes him.
RANIERO
Is this true? Speak!
The Tailor looks down in shame and fear.
RANIERO
This man is a citizen of Viterbo. I
will take him to jail and conduct
the interrogation myself.
CAPTAIN GENERAL
This is a matter for the Church. He
will be interrogated by us.
A curious crowd gathers, whispering among themselves.
69.
RANIERO
We are within the walls of Viterbo.
Here, city law prevails. Hand him
over.
The Captain General scoffs, his Papal Guards tightening their
grips on their swords.
CAPTAIN GENERAL
You overstep, Captain Gatti. This
is no mere city affair. It concerns
the sanctity of the Church.
RANIERO
And I say it concerns the city as
well. If there are spies, we will
root them out, but by our laws and
in our jails.
The Papal Guards unsheathe their swords, causing a gasp from
the crowd. Raniero's Soldiers draw their weapons, ready to
defend their Captain.
CAPTAIN GENERAL
You dare defy the authority of the
Church, Captain?
The crowd watches the standoff with bated breath.
RANIERO
Think, Captain General. A brawl in
the streets will not serve either
of us. Let me question him. I swear
by my honor, you will have your
answers.
The Captain General’s eyes flicker with indecision, but sees
the resolve in Raniero’s gaze. Slowly, he lowers his sword.
CAPTAIN GENERAL
Very well. Should you fail, the
consequences will be dire.
Raniero nods, accepting the condition.
RANIERO
Come here, you criminal.
He takes the Tailor firmly by the arm and moves through the
busy market.
The Captain General and his men follow from a distance,
ensuring the Tailor is headed for confinement.

Whipping and Confessions
EXT. TOWN HALL - DUSK
The Captain General and the Papal Guards stride through the
throng.
From an open second-floor window, the sharp CRACKS of a whip
resonate, accompanied by the Tailor's anguished cries.
The Captain General gives a satisfied nod and continues on.
INT. TOWN HALL JAIL - DUSK
Raniero CRACKS the whip against the wall, each strike echoing
loudly. The Tailor sits comfortably at the table.
TAILOR
Please, Captain! This is more than
I can bear. The pain!
RANIERO
This is the punishment you deserve!
The Tailor pours wine onto two goblets.
TAILOR
I beg you Captain! I can’t endure
this!
Raniero peeks out the window, spots the Captain General and
his Guards disappear into the crowd.
RANIERO
Seems they fancy themselves sharper
than they truly are.
Raniero drops the bullwhip on the table and settles across
the Tailor. They share a toast and drink.
RANIERO
I must keep you here for the night,
or else our ruse won’t work.
TAILOR
Truly, Captain, a respite is
welcome. All this secrecy weighs
heavy on my household.
RANIERO
I know what you mean...
TAILOR
Trouble at home?
71.
RANIERO
My wife feigns strength in all
this, but I sense her burden. The
girls are restless, and my father-
in-law casts all the blame on me.
TAILOR
I see. Maybe you ought to spend the
night here as well.
Raniero smiles at the comment.
RANIERO
We must concoct a believable
confession, or more of us will be
in jeopardy.
TAILOR
What manner of punishment should I
expect, should I take most of the
blame?
RANIERO
No more than a few days in a very
comfortable jail.
TAILOR
With wine?
RANIERO
The finest.
TAILOR
And food?
RANIERO
Your choice.

The Death of Cardinal Pironti
INT. PAPAL PALACE - MAIN CHAMBER - DAY
Cardinals gather in small groups in hushed conversations
throughout the room.
Pantaleone moves toward Ubaldini and Pironti.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
Cardinal Pironti, I can see the
weariness in your eyes from these
prolonged negotiations. I feel it
as well.
72.
Pironti sweats profusely, nods in acknowledgment.
CARDINAL UBALDINI
We have sworn to do anything to
prevent a Frenchman from ascending
to the Papacy.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
I understand that conviction, but
sometimes we must bend to avoid
breaking. Putting aside pride is
not weakness, but wisdom...
As Pantaleone continues fervently, neither man notices
Pironti stumble back, clutching his chest and slumps to the
floor with a dull thud.
Ubaldini and others rush to Pironti’s side, shake him for any
sign of life.
CARDINAL UBALDINI
Pironti? Pironti!
Pironti remains motionless. His eyes devoid of life.
Despair spreads through the room.
EXT. COBBLESTONE STREETS - DAY
The sun casts shadows as a somber procession makes its way
through town.
Villagers line the streets, their usual contentious
expressions replaced by somber reverence.
The casket of Cardinal Pironti, draped in a richly
embroidered pall, glides down the street in the grip of
solemn pallbearers.
Raniero and Father Luzio stand apart from the crowd, observe
the procession with solemn expressions.
RANIERO
This is getting worse by the day.
FATHER LUZIO
Perhaps eighteen minds will agree
more readily than nineteen?
73.
TIME LAPSE
The trees' vibrant green leaves transition through yellow,
orange, and red before carpeting the cobblestone streets in
autumn hues.
The townsfolk move with lethargy. The marketplace chatter
becomes a monotonous drone. As a fight breaks out, local
Soldiers swiftly converge to stop it.
Three of King Charles’s knights watch and find it humorous.
Shutters close earlier in the evening. Smoke from chimneys
becomes a common sight as the villagers seek warmth indoors.
Raniero paces through town, his expression mirroring the
town's growing fatigue.

Turmoil and Joy at the Thermal Baths
EXT. THERMAL BATHS - DAY
Marble pillars surround luxurious natural pools that send
steam into the cool air.
Pantaleone, De Bray, and the French faction relax nude in the
warm waters, their laughter echoing off the stone walls.
Tranquility breaks as fully dressed Orsini stomps between the
pillars, splashing into the pool with a few steps.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
Cardinal Orsini! What news from the
Palace?
CARDINAL ORSINI
How can you all be in leisure while
the Church is in turmoil?
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
On a day this splendid? It would be
a sin to waste it. Does it not feel
glorious upon your feet?
CARDINAL ORSINI
We are charged with deliberating
for a new Pope, yet none of you
have shown up for days!
Pantaleone shifts to meet Orsini’s gaze.
74.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
Ah, Orsini. Always the diligent
one. But let me remind you of our
current predicament. The factions
are deadlocked with no compromise
in sight. The townsfolk curse our
names, and we have already lost one
of our own. Given the
circumstances, we thought it
prudent to take a moment to enjoy
what little solace we can find.
Pantaleone swirls his hand in the water.
CARDINAL DE BRAY
A day of rest might bring us
clarity.
CARDINAL ORSINI
A day of rest while the Church
crumbles? This is dereliction of
duty, plain and simple!
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
Oh, come now, Orsini. Join us.
Sometimes, stepping back is the
only way forward.
Orsini storms out of the baths, whipping his wet robes
angrily.
Pantaleone and the rest burst into laughter.
CARDINAL DE BRAY
Always so serious, that one.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
That is how we’ll outlast the
Italians. As their patience wears
thin, ours will grow.
INT. RANIERO'S COTTAGE - DAY
Raniero enters, weary as ever. Bellina sweeps the floor
diligently, a calm amidst his storm.
BELLINA
Greetings, father.
Bellina embraces him warmly, receiving a kiss on her brow.
75.
RANIERO
It’s good to see you helping.
Where’s your mother?
BELLINA
Outside.
Bellina resumes her sweeping as Raniero heads outside,
intrigued.
EXT. BACKYARD - DAY
Raniero discovers Madolina scrubbing clothes at a stone
basin, her movements animated and cheery.
MADOLINA
Ah, my dear husband arrives!
She sets turns to plant a quick kiss on Raniero.
RANIERO
It warms my heart to see you so
cheerful.
MADOLINA
If your heart needs warming, I take
it the town is still chilly.
RANIERO
Colder than your father’s stare.
Madolina chuckles then turns away coyly.
MADOLINA
I wager I can brighten your day.
RANIERO
I will take that wager.
Madolina resumes her laundry, grinning knowingly. Raniero
watches her, puzzled.
MADOLINA
I am with child.
Raniero's face lights up. He hurries over to Madolina, hoists
her into his arms and spins her around in pure happiness,
kisses her deeply before gently setting her down.
Madolina turns back to her laundry but he hugs her from
behind and kisses her neck. She giggles.
76.
MADOLINA
Let me finish.
RANIERO
Since when did you suspect?
MADOLINA
For a few days now. Let us hope for
a boy this time.
RANIERO
Regardless, we'll love this child
with all our hearts.
Raniero notices Lucida stepping out from the shed, a basket
brimming with eggs in her arms.
LUCIDA
Finished fetching, mother!
MADOLINA
Please set them in the kitchen!
Lucida skips playfully into the house, leaving Raniero
perplexed by this.
RANIERO
How did this happen?
MADOLINA
You were there. Have you forgotten
how children are made?
RANIERO
Not the one in your belly. The two
that wreak havoc daily. They seem
unusually helpful today.
Madolina gives him an amused smirk.
MADOLINA
Oh, they were bickering as usual.
Both insisted on sweeping, so I had
no patience for it. I sent them to
their room until they could sort it
out themselves.
As Raniero listens, a thought begins to form. Madolina takes
the wet clothes and hangs them on the clothesline. He follows
her with intrigue.
RANIERO
That is all it took?
77.
MADOLINA
Yes, surprisingly simple. Although
they did spend many hours in there.
They fought, they screamed, they
begged to be let out. But I held
firm until they were tired and
hungry, and reached an agreement.
RANIERO
How long were they confined?
MADOLINA
Three, maybe four hours. But once
they emerged, they were as meek as
monks.
Raniero's eyes light up with the realization.
RANIERO
You are the most brilliant woman in
the world, you know that?
She nods and he steals one more kiss before dashing off.
INSIDE THE COTTAGE
Raniero nearly bumps into Don Ofredo. Raniero rounds him and
hurries out the front door.
Raniero stands in the center of the room while Montebuono,
behind his desk, looks fraught with dread.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Have you lost your senses?
RANIERO
Months ago. Now we have surpassed
madness itself, Mayor.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
You embarrass me in front of the
council, and now you want me to
endorse this barbaric scheme?
78.
RANIERO
We have achieved nothing, not even
the esteemed reputation for our
city that you desire so much. The
opposite in fact.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Ridiculous.
RANIERO
The entire world scorns us. Our own
people have turned their backs on
us!
Montebuono weighs this, his head bouncing side to side.
RANIERO
How do you think an angry mob will
vote in the next mayoral election?
Montebuono glares and points a finger at Raniero.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
I have always had the best
intentions.
RANIERO
Then prove it. Sequestering the
Cardinals is our only option.
Montebuono considers deeply. He rises and gazes out of the
open window, hands clasped behind his back.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
What you propose... it could lead
to complete disaster, Raniero.
RANIERO
Our people suffer. We are virtual
pariahs. Let us do what's right for
once, Mayor. It will also sway
public opinion in our favor.
Montebuono turns to gauge Raniero then looks out at the city
once more.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
God help us all... do what must be
done. You have my support.
Raniero clenches his fist in victory, leaves the room with
energetic determination.
79.
EXT. TOWN SQUARE - DAY
Villagers and merchants conduct business with vigor. Amidst
the crowd, a group of KNIGHTS casually examine their horses
and check their gear.
Raniero approaches them briskly.
RANIERO
Sir Guillaume? I am Raniero Gatti,
Captain of Viterbo. King Charles
has requested your presence.
The Knights exchange glances. SIR GUILLAUME narrows his eyes,
studying Raniero.
SIR GUILLAUME
Since when does the King send
someone like you on his errands?
RANIERO
With tensions high and so many eyes
watching, he wanted someone the
people trust. My position in
Viterbo provides a cover that his
own men cannot.
Sir Guillaume considers this, turns to the other Knights.
SIR GUILLAUME
Mount up.
EXT. PORTA ROMANA GATES - DAY
The Knights approach the fortified gate, where local soldiers
stand rigid. Swords gleam as the Knights pass through the
throng and exit the city walls.
INT. KING CHARLES’S TENT - DAY
King Charles leans over a sprawling map spread across a
wooden table, his eyes sharp and calculating. Alard stands by
his side along with Pierre, King Charles’s chief torturer.
KING CHARLES
Peloponnese first. Coastal access
is key to securing their supply
lines.
ALARD
A strategic move, Your Majesty. It
would cripple their naval strength.
80.
Sir Guillaume enters the tent and bows respectfully.
SIR GUILLAUME
You summoned me, Your Majesty?
King Charles looks up from the map, confusion on his face.
KING CHARLES
I did not call for you.
SIR GUILLAUME
I was informed it was urgent, Sire.
Outside the tent, a sudden commotion interrupts their
conversation.
EXT. KING CHARLES'S TENT - DAY
King Charles, Alard, Pierre and Sir Guillaume emerge from the
tent to find a group of Knights gathered outside.
KING CHARLES
What is happening here?
In answer, a loud CLANKING sound echoes. They turn to see:
The gates of Viterbo lowering.
KING CHARLES
Halt them at once!
The Knights thunder through the tents, shouldering past
curious onlookers in their haste.
EXT. PORTA ROMANA GATES - DAY
The Knights reach the gates just as the massive wooden doors
slam shut with a THUD. Villagers and Guards on the other side
quickly fasten chain and bolts.
The Knights stand before the imposing gate. King Charles and
his men arrive, his face etched with fury.
KING CHARLES
This is treachery!
ALARD
Sire, if we are barred from the
Cardinals, our influence dwindles.
KING CHARLES
Can we break through?
81.
ALARD
I will devise a plan, Your Majesty.
EXT. CARDINAL PANTALEONE'S RESIDENCE - DAY
Papal Guards stand watch outside Pantaleone's opulent
residence. Suddenly, local soldiers in greater number arrive
and swiftly push the guards aside.
Soon after, the soldiers emerge dragging Pantaleone by the
arm.
EXT. STREETS OF VITERBO - DAY
Stern-faced Soldiers drive a line of Cardinals down narrow
streets. Onlookers jeer at the Cardinals with vicious glee.
EXT. CARDINAL DE BRAY'S RESIDENCE - DAY
Soldiers burst into the residence. Inside, De Bray
frantically gathers his belongings. The Soldiers seize him
and pull him out into the daylight.
EXT. MAIN SQUARE - DAY
Soldiers herd the Cardinals through the courtyard. The
Cardinals’ expressions swirl in confusion.
INT. PAPAL PALACE - MAIN CHAMBER - DAY
Guards corral the Cardinals into the grand hall of the
palace. As the last enters, the doors close behind them.
The Cardinals look around nervously, expecting the walls to
close in. Outside, the shouts of a restless crowd grow.
Odo is led in from the inner chambers. The door shuts firmly
behind him.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
What does this revolt signify?
CARDINAL ODO
If I had answers, you would hear
them.
The clamor from the crowd outside decreases to a murmur. The
door opens and Raniero stalks in, his expression resolute.
82.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
Captain Gatti, I should have known
you are responsible for this riot!
RANIERO
No, your own actions have incited
it. If you insist on acting like
children, you will be treated as
such.
CARDINAL DE BRAY
We have committed no offense!
RANIERO
It's been nearly two years with no
decision in sight. Make yourselves
comfortable, Your Eminences. You
will not be leaving the Palace
anytime soon.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
This is sacrilege! To be treated
like common thieves!
RANIERO
No more than how you’ve treated our
city with your ineptitude!
CARDINAL UBALDINI
Do you mean to suggest--
RANIERO
I mean that your days of comfort
and luxury are over. From now on,
this room will be your home. You
will eat and sleep here. You may
only leave for necessary functions,
under escort. There will be no more
feasts, bread and water will
sustain you. I swear by God, you
will not leave until the next Holy
Father is chosen.

EXT. CITY WALL - TOP - DAY
Sir Guillaume reaches the top of the wall and pulls himself

83.
The Knights rush along the battlements. The few guards
present stand aside and let them pass unopposed.
EXT. PORTA ROMANA GATES - DAY
The Knights reach the gate and lift the heavy bars and unlock

With a final heave, the gates unlock and open. The knights
charge in, led by King Charles and his men.
EXT. VITERBO STREETS - DAY
Villagers hastily clear the streets, ushering their children
indoors as doors bolt shut and shutters slam. A distant
RUMBLE grows louder.
King Charles and his Knights thunder through the streets,
their horses' hooves pounding on the cobblestones.
EXT. MAIN SQUARE - DAY
King Charles and his forces arrive, their horses halting
abruptly. Before them, villagers and local soldiers stand
defiantly in the square.
Local soldiers, armed with swords and shields, form a
protective line in front of the Papal Palace.
Behind them, villagers wield pitchforks and rotten produce.
They shout and jeer, their resolve evident.
The Knights grip their reins tightly, eyes scanning the
crowd. King Charles's face hardens.
KING CHARLES
Fools! Do you truly think you can
bar my entrance to the palace?
Raniero steps forward from among the crowd.
RANIERO
The Cardinals have failed their
duties. Until they fulfill them,
they will remain confined, safe
from threats... and free from
meddling.
KING CHARLES
Stand down, or face the
consequences!
84.
King Charles brandishes his sword and holds it high. The
knights unsheathe their swords as well.
ALARD
Your Majesty, violence in Viterbo’s
streets may doom your plans.
KING CHARLES
How so?
ALARD
Blood spilled on the streets would
cast doubt upon the election's
legality. The new Pontiff's
authority would be weakened,
rendering his support for any of
your campaigns meaningless.
After a moment, King Charles sheathes his sword and turns his
gaze to Pierre.
KING CHARLES
I suppose there are other ways to
achieve our goals.
PIERRE
I will see to it personally, Sire.
King Charles signals to his forces, they wheel their horses
and gallop away.
The villagers cheer wildly! Raniero and Father Luzio exchange
knowing nods.

INT. PAPAL PALACE - MAIN CHAMBER - NIGHT
Cardinals attempt to sleep on cold stone floors. A

CARDINAL BANCSA, lies near the center.
Pantaleone stands by the window, gazing at the soldiers in
the courtyard.
De Bray struggles to arrange his robes into a makeshift bed
on the cold floor.
CARDINAL DE BRAY
This is an outrage. We are men of
the cloth, not common vagrants.
Ubaldini, who looks relatively comfortable tucked against a
near wall, chuckles softly.
85.
CARDINAL UBALDINI
Your complaints will not soften
these stones.
CARDINAL DE BRAY
Easy for you to say, since you are
used to playing the martyr.
CARDINAL PALTANIERI
Missing your plush feather bed

faith.
De Bray glares, then he continues to fuss with his robes.
Ubaldini notices Orsini sitting in prayer near the corner.
CARDINAL UBALDINI
Even the Lord rested on the seventh
day, Orsini.
CARDINAL ORSINI
Did not our Lord stay up praying on
the night before his trials, while
his disciples slept?
Bancsa continues to snore. Pantaleone raises an eyebrow
intrigued by Bancsa’s ability to sleep.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
Impressive to see a man sleep in
these conditions.
CARDINAL DE BRAY
But how can any of us fall asleep
with that noise?
De Bray crawls over to Bancsa and gives him a firm push,
rolling him onto his side.
The snoring pauses for a moment, then returns with a

in a lavish banquet spread across long tables.
Francesca serves plates of upscale food to the delighted

FRANCESCA wipes her hands on her apron and approaches Raniero

FRANCESCA
The last of the leftovers...
turning us peasants into lords for

RANIERO
You are a marvel, Francesca. Taking
any of this home to your family?
FRANCESCA
Nay, the husband and sons are
already plump as oxen.
RANIERO
Must be a relief not having to

FRANCESCA
Precisely. Now it's only deciding
which loaf to grace their eminences
with.
RANIERO
I vote for the cheapest you have.
They share a laugh.

side doors, even the servants'
quarters.
They make a left into a different corridor.
RANIERO

someone to slip by unnoticed.
BURLY GUARD
What about the windows?
87.
RANIERO

INT. PODESTA PALACE - RANIERO’S QUARTERS - DAY
Inside, Pierre sits behind the desk, eyes scanning one of the
secret notes with several others strewn across the desk. A
fire burns briskly in the fireplace.
The Captain General stands nearby, his foot placed arrogantly
upon the large chest--the lid shattered, the lock in pieces
on the floor.
RANIERO
Who are you?
PIERRE
The man summoned when shadows
deepen and secrets must be spilled.
Suddenly, Sir Guillaume and two of King Charles's Knights
emerge from the nearby shadows, converging on Raniero. Sir
Guillaume prods him forward with the tip of his dagger.
Raniero clocks a third Knight who grips the Tailor by the
collar, his eye puffy and bruised from a beating.
Instinct takes over as Raniero charges, but the Captain
General swiftly slams him against the wall and lands a gut
punch that leaves Raniero gasping for air.
Pierre calmly looks up, eyes narrow as he studies Raniero.
PIERRE
Ah, where are my manners? Pierre
Duval, Chief Interrogator to King
Charles.
Pierre scans the notes.

PIERRE
(reads)
Pantaleone plans to corner Orsini,
threatening to expose his ties to

Pierre’s eyes lock onto Raniero. He rises and calmly

PIERRE
It seems ambition blinds even the
wisest of men. I do wonder why you
kept the messages since they
incriminate you so plainly. Could
it be, perchance, to unveil them if
the election results are unsuitable
for the Italians?
The Burly Guard, still in the hallway, manages to slip away.
PIERRE
You had quite the conspiracy
brewing. Don’t be upset with your
Tailor, it’s not his fault. My
methods of inquisition are simply
very... persuasive.
(to the Tailor)
You have served your purpose well.
You may go.
Pierre nods to the Knight who releases the Tailor.
TAILOR
I’m sorry, Captain.
The Tailor plods out.
RANIERO
You wield no authority here.
PIERRE
Captain General, does not Viterbo
fall under the Church's domain?
CAPTAIN GENERAL
Most assuredly, My Lord.
89.
PIERRE
And as this crime strikes at the
heart of the Church itself, justice
must be swift and severe.
Pierre steps closer, his voice low and menacing.
PIERRE
Fear not, Signor Gatti. Your plot
shall proceed, and the Cardinals
will stay secluded. But your reign
as Captain is at its end. You will
tell me all involved in your
scheme. I do pray no one in your

own good.
Raniero's eyes widen briefly with fear before settling into a

Confrontation at the Gates of Viterbo
EXT. VITERBO STREET - DAY
Pierre strides ahead towards the gates., Sir Guillaume tugs
Raniero along by a rope binding Raniero’s wrists, who has a
bloody lip. The two Knights form a rearguard.
At the gates stands Montebuono with dozens of soldiers, city
officials, and villagers, The Tailor among them--all with
stern expressions.
Both groups march forward until they come face to face.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Where do you think you are taking
our Captain?
PIERRE
Who is this person?
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
I am Albertus de Montebuono, mayor
of Viterbo.
90.
PIERRE
Think wisely, Mayor. Your men are
but mice against the lion’s roar of
the King’s forces. This man is
chief among conspirators. He stays
with us, to be questioned further.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
And what evidence supports this
claim?
PIERRE
Spreading election secrets among
the commoners. A grave offense.
Yet, should he name the other
conspirators, mercy might find him.
A knight’s fist tightens on the hilt of his sword. Soldiers
on either side of Montebuono respond in kind.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
In that case, I confess to be a
conspirator as well.
In response, each city official and villager steps forward,
uttering the same declaration: "I confess." Montebuono takes
this in, smiling with grim pride.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Most of Viterbo is entangled in
this affair. Will you take us all
into custody?
The soldier from the smaller gate steps forward, pointing
directly at the Captain General.
SOLDIER
I saw him escorting a Cardinal out
of the Eastern gate, heading
straight for the King’s tent.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Can you identify the Cardinal?
SOLDIER
Couldn't see his face, but his nose
was sharp as an eagle's beak.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
An eagle's nose... now let me see,
that points to Cardinal Pantaleone,
doesn't it?
91.
CAPTAIN GENERAL
This man lies!
SOLDIER
He threatened me with his sword. In
the chaos, he dropped this.
The Soldier presents a pouch to Montebuono. He opens it and
retrieves a large golden medallion.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Look here, the crossed sword and
shield insignia.
(turns the medallion)
"Fortitudine Vincimus." This is
undoubtedly the Captain General's
medallion. This is scandalous.
CAPTAIN GENERAL
This thief stole it from me!
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Did he indeed? Perhaps we should
ask Cardinal Pantaleone about this.
Cardinal Odo will be greatly
troubled to discover that one of
his own faction is an informant.
Pierre surveys the expanding crowd with growing concern.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
You see? Everyone here has their
own interests. Release him at once.
Pierre signals to Sir Guillaume, who releases Raniero. They
proceed to leave through the gate.
Watching them depart, Montebuono turns to the citizens. To a
one, their faces show gratitude and admiration for him.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO

now. We may all resume our duties.

INT. KING CHARLES’S TENT - NIGHT
Oil lamps cast a greasy luster across King Charles as he sits
at his table, scribbling furiously on a parchment. Pierre
stands to the side, maintaining a respectful distance.
92.
KING CHARLES
Explain to me why I shouldn't be
inclined to replace you.
PIERRE
Your Majesty, they had evidence of
your covert dealings with Cardinal
Pantaleone. It complicated my
efforts to apprehend Captain Gatti.
However, all traces of our schemes
have been eradicated.
KING CHARLES
That is hardly consolation.
King Charles finishes writing, seals the note with his royal
stamp, and hands it to Pierre.
KING CHARLES
Deliver this to Pantaleone.
PIERRE
Your Majesty, navigating through
the soldiers protecting the Papal
Palace might prove difficult.
KING CHARLES
Then find a way! Determination
without success is a commoner's
lament, Pierre, not mine. Do I make
myself clear?
PIERRE
As you command, Sire.
INT. PAPAL PALACE - MAIN CHAMBER - DAY
The Cardinals, faces haggard and frustrated, pass a chalice
to one another. Each one drops a folded ballots into the
chalice.
MOMENTS AFTER
The doors crack open and Raniero steps inside, bearing a
basket filled with bread and a jug of water. He looks to Odo
for an update.
CARDINAL ODO
No decision yet, Raniero.
Raniero nods in disappointment. He sets the basket and water
on the floor.
93.
CARDINAL DE BRAY
This fare is hardly sufficient!
Raniero meets De Bray's complaint with a steady gaze.
RANIERO
Ah, but it is just sufficient.
Forgive me if I suggest that
perhaps your tastes have grown fat
at the expense of your reasoning.
In fact, I've heard it said that
less bread for the body often
sharpens the mind for matters more
celestial.
Cardinal Bancsa, frail and coughing, rises in protest.
CARDINAL BANCSA
This is unacceptable!
Raniero faces the assembly with a measured gaze.
RANIERO
If you wish to depart, esteemed
Cardinals, you have that power. The
choice of a successor remains in
your hands.
With that, he turns and exits the chamber and LOCKS the door.
Bancsa coughs violently and settles on the bench, causing
concern among the other Cardinals who surround him.
CARDINAL ORSINI
You are clearly unwell, Cardinal
Bancsa. You must rest.
CARDINAL BANCSA
Nonsense... I am perfectly fine.
CARDINAL PALTANIERI
Truly, if angels appointed an
earthly paragon of health, it would
be you.
CARDINAL ORSINI
We must insist on summoning a
physician for you, Cardinal.
CARDINAL BANCSA
I refuse! I won't depart this
chamber until we have...
His words are cut short by a fit of violent coughing.

Family Concerns and Drastic Solutions
EXT. PAPAL PALACE - DAY
The casket of Cardinal Bancsa is brough out, borne by solemn
pallbearers past villagers with impassive expressions.
Raniero and Father Luzio observe the procession as it moves
along the cobblestone streets.
FATHER LUZIO
Seventeen. It’s attrition rather
than a decision, but it’s progress.
INT. RANIERO'S COTTAGE - KITCHEN - DAY
Madolina stands at the wooden table, now noticeably pregnant,
and deftly chops vegetables with practiced ease. Raniero
enters with a warm smile.
RANIERO
My dear, you handle a knife more
skillfully than many a warrior.
MADOLINA
Then perhaps I should join the
infantry. Do you think they could
make a hauberk to cover my belly?
Raniero comes up behind and places a hand on her belly, her
face lighting up with a smile.
MADOLINA
I am certain it will be a boy.
RANIERO
Why do you believe that?
MADOLINA
He kicks like a spirited colt.
RANIERO
Oh, and Belinda and Lucida were as
docile as a lambs?
MADOLINA
No, they were tenacious as badgers,
but this one feels different.
Raniero's gaze shifts to the next room where Don Ofredo sits
alone, his once sturdy frame now appears frail. Madolina
leans closer.
95.
MADOLINA
He eats little these days. I fear
for him.
RANIERO
I would have thought the news of a
grandson would bring him joy.
MADOLINA
I thought so as well. I meant to
keep it as a surprise, but I told
him to lift his spirits. Yet
somehow, it hasn't worked.
RANIERO
It might be my failure to resolve
the election. It has brought a
stain upon our name and family.
MADOLINA
Your popularity soars, especially
since secluding the Cardinals.
RANIERO
For a short while. But it wanes
with each day that passes without a
resolution.
MADOLINA
It astonishes me that they would
place politics over peace and let
the world fall around them. Yet,
there must be a solution. As my
mother used to say, if the grapes
won't yield their wine, you must
press them harder.
Raniero nods and ponders. His eyes widen in a eureka moment.
RANIERO
I may know how to press these
grapes I’m facing... it’s drastic,
to be sure, but necessary.

A Soldier escorts Pantaleone from the Papal Palace towards
the cathedral. He endures the disdainful stares and jeers
from villagers.

INT. VITERBO CATHEDRAL - LATRINE - DUSK
Rows of chamber pots sit in neat lines. Pantaleone enters
cautiously.
Among the pots, Pantaleone's keen eye catches something: a
chamber pot stands apart, positioned under a small alcove.
Intrigued, he approaches and spots a faint glint tucked
discreetly behind the rim. He reaches inside and withdraws a
folded parchment.
Unfolding it, he discovers a message bearing King Charles's
royal seal: "Do your worst, Pantaleone."
INT. PAPAL PALACE - MAIN CHAMBER - MORNING
The Cardinals surround the table. Their faces and postures
reflect heated and long deliberations.
CARDINAL ORSINI
How long must we endure this
deadlock?
CARDINAL DE BRAY
Ah, Orsini, always the fence-
sitter. I fear we will reach the
second coming before your decision.
CARDINAL PALTANIERI
De Bray, your tongue cuts sharper
than a swordsman's blade.
CARDINAL UBALDINI
But with as much precision as a
drunken duelist.
As they speak, the discordant rumble of a gathering crowd
echoes through the palace walls, prompting concerned glances
among the Cardinals.
CARDINAL ODO
What in God's name is that noise?
The as the uproar swells. Villagers' shapes gather beyond the
palace windows.
A loud CRASH reverberates through the chamber. Dust and
debris rain down as a wooden beam rips free from the roof.
The Cardinals look up in astonishment to see Raniero peering
down through the newly made gap.
97.
RANIERO
Apologies for the disturbance, your
Eminences! We'll be done before the
bell tolls.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
Captain, you must be possessed! The
devil himself drives you!
RANIERO
Surely your deliberations are more
pressing than a peasant's exorcism,
Cardinal. Please, carry on.
Ropes yank another plank away and more debris falls on the
Cardinals. Orsini shakes his head with a wry smile.
EXT. PAPAL PALACE - DAY
The villagers swarm like ants over the roof. MEN and WOMEN of
all ages work together with efficiency.
Some carry wooden beams, passing them from hand to hand in a
human chain. Others use ropes to pull and remove each section
of the roof.
They create a symphony of cooperation and ingenuity. Each
villager plays their part, their actions synchronized as if
rehearsed. They exchange shouts and laughter.
Raniero diligently works among the villagers as they remove
the planks, wipes sweat from his brow.
At the bottom, Father Luzio blesses the crowd. The Bookmaker
nears and discretely hands Father Luzio his winnings.
INT. PAPAL PALACE - MAIN CHAMBER - DAY
The roof steadily disappears, revealing patches of blue sky
and the afternoon sun. Orsini looks up with admiration.
CARDINAL ORSINI

organized than us.
CARDINAL UBALDINI
At least we have a splendid view
now.
98.
INT. LARGE TAVERN - EVENING
Raniero, Madolina, Father Luzio, Montebuono, and a spirited
crowd of villagers gather around rough-hewn tables.
Goblets of wine clink together.
RANIERO
To our unity in action!
Francesca and her staff weave through the crowd, pouring wine
and passing platters of food.
FATHER LUZIO
I believe the saints are raising a
glass to our bravery tonight.
The villagers cheer and laugh.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
To Viterbo! Let others say we are
infamous; I say we are ingenious!
Laughter erupts. Someone starts a lively song, and soon all
the patrons form a chorus of merriment.
Outside, the celebration spills into the streets, resembling
a yearly holiday.
INT. PAPAL PALACE - DAY
Roofless and exposed to the elements. Shadows cast long and
dark lines across the ancient stone floor.
The Cardinals stand in heated debate. They remain in a
shadowed corner of the palace, away from the harsh rays of
the early sun.
At noon, the sun looms directly overhead, no shadows in
sight. It beats down mercilessly on the Cardinals.
As the sun descends, long shadows creep out. The Cardinals
have followed the relief of the shade.
Night falls, and the Cardinals huddle on the stone floor,
pressing close for warmth. Their breaths form small puffs of
mist in the frigid air.

INT. ROYAL TENT - NIGHT
Flickering candles illuminate lavish furnishings. King
Charles sits across from KING PHILIP III, youthful and
regally clad in azure with the golden French fleurs-de-lis.
A beautiful servant kneels beside King Philip, massaging his
feet. Pierre and Alard stand nearby, attentive.
KING CHARLES
You are welcome to stay here,
Philip. Is this tent not to your
liking?
KING PHILIP
Thank you, Charles, but after the
crusade in Tunis, I've grown fond
of solid walls.
King Philip winces as the servant digs her knuckle into the
base of his foot.
KING PHILIP
The efforts these citizens have
exerted to sway the cardinals are
quite astonishing, wouldn't you
agree?
PIERRE
Their methods are indeed...
exquisite. Perhaps I shall borrow a
few for my interrogations.
Alard shoots Pierre a disapproving glare.
KING PHILIP
I've arranged for a delegation to
visit the cardinals in the morning,
to ensure their well-being.
KING CHARLES
Let us hope the presence of two
monarchs will finally nudge the
Cardinals to break this impasse.

The Interdict of Viterbo
EXT. MAIN SQUARE - DAY
Local soldiers stand guard around the Papal Palace.
Townspeople fill the square.
Raniero blends into the crowd. Father Luzio joins him, his
gaze drawn to the open side doors of the palace.
100.
FATHER LUZIO
They needed more fresh air?
RANIERO
A delegation from King Philip is
conferring with the Cardinals to
ensure everything is in order.
FATHER LUZIO
And we are certain they're not
meddling with the election?
Just then, the DELEGATE emerges from the palace, followed by
French soldiers. The crowd falls silent as they march to the
center of the square.
The Delegate unfurls a scroll and clears his throat.
DELEGATE
Hear ye, hear ye! By the authority
vested in the Cardinals of the Holy
See, I declare the town of Viterbo,
and all its citizens, are hereby
placed under interdict!
Gasps ripple through the crowd. Some voices protest, while
others cover their mouths in disbelief.
DELEGATE
Henceforth, all church bells shall
cease their tolling! No sacraments
of the Church shall be
administered—-no baptisms to wash
away original sin, no confirmations
to strengthen the faithful, no
Eucharist to partake in the body
and blood of Christ! No marriages
shall be solemnized! And all who
defy these decrees shall face the
penalty of excommunication!
The crowd grows restless. The bell ringer, Federico,
overhears this from the sidelines and looks down in sorrow.
Don Ofredo, also in attendance, clasps his hands tightly over
his heart, his face etched with sorrow.
Outsiders observe the scene and chuckle at the town's
predicament.
101.
INT. PAPAL PALACE - MAIN CHAMBER - DAY
Orsini stands by the window, his brow furrowed as he peers at
the discouraged crowd below.
CARDINAL ORSINI
The interdict was unnecessary. We
risk alienating our own faithful.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
And yet, was it not the town that
overstepped by confining us? It
appeared the sole recourse.
CARDINAL ORSINI
Why, for the grievous sin of
desiring a Pope? Were I in their
place, I would’ve done the no
different!
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
As I said, each of us has our
talents. Bringing out the shears
for the flock was long overdue.
Odo approaches Orsini, places a hand on his shoulder.
CARDINAL ODO
Pantaleone speaks truth. Painful as
it is, firmness was needed to
assert our authority.
Orsini marches off in disgust. Pantaleone monitors him, a sly
grin on his face. De Bray discretely approaches him.
CARDINAL DE BRAY
What of King Philip’s desire that
we form a smaller committee? It
could hasten our decision.
CARDINAL ODO
And entrust the fate of the papacy
to but a handful? I think not.
Unless... we ensure enough of our
own are included in it.
INT. GUILD HALL - DUSK
A demoralized crowd perches in silence. Mayor Montebuono
occupies the front, Raniero remains by his side.
102.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
We can rescind the Cardinals'
confinement, and return to
normalcy. But, if we do so, we'll
be right back where we started.
The visibly upset Worn Woman rises.
WORN WOMAN
But we can't set foot inside a
church! We can’t even baptize our
own children!
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
The interdict will be removed in
time, I assure you. But whatever
you decide, Raniero and I stand
with you.
The crowd exchange glances. Then, the Old Man rises.
OLD MAN
If we concede now, those Cardinals
continue to abuse us indefinitely.
I say we see this through.
A wave of agreement spreads through the crowd.
MAYOR MONTEBUONO
Very well, it's settled then.
Suddenly, the Burly Guard bursts through the door, winded and
with concern etched on his face.
BURLY GUARD
Captain, there is been a murder!
Raniero springs into action, swiftly following the Burly
Guard out of the guild hall.
EXT. CHURCH OF SAN SILVESTRO - DUSK
The BRUTALIZED BODY of a young English nobleman lies on the
front steps in a pool of blood.
Onlookers surround the body, murmuring in shock. A WEEPING
WOMAN is consoled by friends.
Raniero, the Burly Guard, and soldiers arrive at the scene.
Raniero kneels next to the corpse, winces then looks away.
103.
BURLY GUARD
Captain, the culprits fled toward
the Eastern gate. Soldiers are in
pursuit, but--
RANIERO
Then redouble your efforts! I want
those killers found.
The Burly Guard beckons the soldiers, who quickly mobilize.
A PRIEST, sorrow weighing down his face, steps forward from
the crowd carrying a cloth and hands it Raniero.
Raniero carefully drapes the cloth over the body, obscuring
the gruesome sight from the onlookers.
INT. RANIERO'S COTTAGE - NIGHT
Bellina and Lucida peek out from a corner, their eyes wide
with fear.
RANIERO (O.S.)
You act like I murdered him!
Madolina joins them, squeezing them close to her.
DON OFREDO (O.S.)
You may as well have with how
you’ve tormented the Cardinals!
Raniero paces by the hearth, his face flushed with anger. Don
Ofredo holds his ground and glares at Raniero.
RANIERO
That murder was a private quarrel.
Those men were members of King
Charles’s court, but it was
unrelated to the election!
DON OFREDO
This town rots under your watch!
You, the... Captain, should have
prevented such disgrace!
RANIERO
It’s unjust to lay this at my feet.
I've done all within my power to
maintain order.
104.
DON OFREDO
Order? What order? Under your
command, we are barred from sacred
rites, our honor dragged through
the mud. Murder in our streets!
This is your legacy!
RANIERO
I secluded the Cardinals to hasten
a decision! Would you rather I sat
back and did nothing?
DON OFREDO
Nothing would have been better!
Your seclusion has only deepened
our woes. The town is on the brink
of chaos. One would think that was
your intent, because it could not
have been worse had you tried.
Raniero's eyes widen in shock before blazing with fury.
RANIERO
And you, Ofredo? What of your
actions? You’ve turned your back on
your granddaughters. You scorn your
own daughter for not bearing a male
heir. What manner of father are
you?
DON OFREDO
My family is my concern, not yours!
RANIERO
They are more my family than yours!
Your behavior has made that clear.
Your very presence is like oil of
vitriol! Eating away at our sanity
with your bitterness. So, do not
place blame on me without
reflecting on your own failings.
DON OFREDO
How dare you? You overstep,
Raniero. I regret ever giving her
to you in marriage!
Suddenly, Madolina bursts into the midst of the heated
argument.
MADOLINA
Enough! You may mistreat me, but I
will not tolerate you speaking ill
of the only good man in my life.
105.
Don Ofredo’s eyes widen with offense.
DON OFREDO
Your mother would be ashamed to
hear you say such things.
MADOLINA
My mother was a saint for enduring
your rules and expectations!
Don Ofredo recoils, stunned by Madolina's bold words.
MADOLINA
All those years she tolerated your
tyranny for my sake. Did you know
Raniero was the one who defended
you? When I protested your constant
demands for a grandson, in front of
our own daughters, in our own home!
Raniero embraces Madolina as she collapses in tears. Bellina
and Lucida rush to their parents, enveloped in their embrace.
Don Ofredo stands in stunned silence, the weight of guilt
beginning to take root.
DON OFREDO
Since the Cardinals are
sequestered, I can retreat to my
own abode. You will no longer have
to endure my... presence.
Don Ofredo shuffles away.

INT. RANIERO'S COTTAGE - MORNING
Raniero and Madolina watch the carriage as it travels down
the road toward the village. Raniero hangs his head.
RANIERO
He’s right. This is my fault.
Everything... even widening the
divide between you and your father.
Madolina clasps his hand and squeezes.
106.
MADOLINA
No. That bridge crumbled long ago.
Madolina turns to Raniero with earnest eyes.
MADOLINA
What has happened to this town is
not your fault, but this town is
your responsibility.
RANIERO
What do you mean.
MADOLINA
You are the Captain of Viterbo. Put
an end to this. Do what is right.
EXT. MAIN SQUARE - DAY
Flush with vendors and townsfolk. Raniero strides through, a
basket of bread in one hand and a jug of water in the other.
He notices Federico, the young bell ringer, crouching by the
fountain with a hopeless expression. Raniero approaches him.
RANIERO
Federico! Why the long face? Has
the fountain run dry?
FEDERICO
Nay, Captain. It’s my heart that is
dry. I am forbidden to ring the
church bell anymore.
Raniero sits next to Federico.
RANIERO
This interdict weighs heavy on all
our shoulders... how long have you
been the bell ringer, two years?
FEDERICO
Three years. In my youth, I was
nothing but a thief, pilfering what
I could to fill my belly. One day,
Father Luzio caught me in the act.
But instead of casting me to the
gallows, he offered me to work as
the bell ringer, or face the
magistrate.
RANIERO
And you chose the church.
107.
FEDERICO
It changed my life, Captain. I
found purpose, faith, and a chance
to redeem myself. But now...
without the bell, I feel as lost as
I did in those dark days.
Raniero looks towards the Papal palace and ponders. He turns
back to Federico with a compassionate expression.

darkest clouds bring the most
bountiful rain.

CARDINAL PANTALEONE
Oh, Captain Gatti. How fortunate
for us that you graces us with your

Raniero slams the basket of bread and jug of water down,
bread scattering across the stone floor.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
Is this the next stage of the
confinement? To eat off the floor?
RANIERO
End the interdict. Immediately.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
On what grounds?
RANIERO
The people are innocent.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
They chose their own fate, Captain.
RANIERO
I alone ordered your confinement.
The citizens merely obeyed me. Hold
me accountable, not them.
108.
CARDINAL ODO
Captain, I admire your stance,
truly. But if you shoulder all
responsibility, you'll bear the

excommunication, until you publicly

After a long pause...
RANIERO
I understand.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
But if we are freed from this
prison, the interdict would end,
and no one suffers needlessly.
Raniero turns his wrathful gaze on Pantaleone.
RANIERO

A silence lingers, until--
CARDINAL ODO
It's with a heavy heart that I

excommunication upon you. May you
find the path back to grace and
redemption.
Odo turns to the Cardinals.
CARDINAL ODO

RANIERO
I want to be a good husband, a good

The Cardinals murmur, their faces etched with exhaustion and

CARDINAL PANTALEONE
It’s what Captain Gatti and his

CARDINAL DE BRAY

CARDINAL ORSINI
Orsini, Savelli, Paltinieri,
Ubaldini, Annibaldi, and Castella.
Pantaleone’s face reddens with outrage.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE

EXT. MAIN SQUARE - AFTERNOON

INT. PAPAL PALACE - MAIN CHAMBER - DAY
The Cardinals engage in an earnest discussion. One of the

CARDINAL DE BRAY
Teobaldo Visconti? The man is not

Ubaldini steps forward, his expression one of patient

CARDINAL UBALDINI
True, but his wisdom and diplomatic

Orsini nods in agreement, his tone firm and resolute.
CARDINAL ORSINI
Given that the Italians refuse any

Pantaleone nods thoughtfully, rubbing his chin.

CARDINAL ODO

The room collectively exhales with relief. Odo coughs them
into silence then raises his arms high.
CARDINAL ODO
By the will of this sacred College,
Teobaldo Visconti is proclaimed our

The Cardinals nod in agreement, drained and soaked as if they
just finished a marathon.
Suddenly, the door UNLOCKS and swings open. Raniero steps in,

Raniero! The decision has been
made. We have a Pope.
Raniero slows to a stop, disbelief washing over him. He
whirls, a tear streaks down his face.
RANIERO
Is this possible?
CARDINAL ODO
With God, all things are possible.
Teobaldo Visconti as been chosen.
Raniero rushes out, closing the door behind him, leaving the
Cardinals perplexed.
114.
Suddenly, the door swings open again, remaining ajar.

Ubaldini leans toward De Bray, a sly grin crossing his face.
CARDINAL UBALDINI
A noticeable improvement in your
scent, I must say.
Only Pantaleone wears a displeased look.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
As though no hardships had ever
befallen us.
CARDINAL ODO
It's a celebration marking the end
of a long and trying ordeal. Let
them rejoice. This moment is
theirs.
Odo turns to the Cardinals.
CARDINAL ODO
It falls upon us to welcome
Visconti and uphold him. May the
Lord grant strength and wisdom to
our leader, His vessel of peace.

Ignoring the curious stares of passing knights, the Messenger
moves with purpose until he reaches the designated tent.
INT. TENT - DUSK
TEOBALDO VISCONTI sits with his trusted aide, BROTHER MATTEO,
poring over maps and letters. The tent flap rustles as the
Messenger enters, brandishing a sealed message.
MESSENGER
My lord, an urgent message.
116.
Teobaldo takes the message, noting the seal with surprise.
The Messenger bows and slips out.
TEOBALDO
From the Holy See?
He breaks the seal and reads. His curiosity transforms to
disbelief, sinks into his chair. Brother Matteo takes the
letter and reads, his face registers the importance.
BROTHER MATTEO
The Lord surely has His surprises.
TEOBALDO
But why? Why would they choose me?
BROTHER MATTEO
It is not men who have chosen you,
but God Himself.
TEOBALDO
But I cannot abandon my brethren
knights here in the Holy Land.
BROTHER MATTEO
This election has taken long
enough. The Church’s flock needs
its shepherd... your Holiness.
Teobaldo looks bemused, as if Matteo spoke a foreign tongue.

END MONTAGE
INT. VITERBO CATHEDRAL - DAY
Madelina cradles her infant son. To her right, Don Ofredo’s,
weathered face softens with pride. To her left, Bellina and
Lucida watch attentively.
Father Luzio presides over the ceremony as Francesca, Mayor
Montebuono, and a small group watch with quiet reverence.
Cardinal Pantaleone stands apart, frowning with disapproval.
Through the open door, Raniero’s silent silhouette observes
at the threshold.
EXT. VITERBO CATHEDRAL - DAY
Two Papal Guards stand at the entrance rigid and foreboding.
Raniero watches with a mixture of joy and sorrow, wipes away
tears. Unable to watch any longer, he lumbers away.
INT. VITERBO CATHEDRAL - DAY
Father Luzio holds a serene gaze as he addresses them.
FATHER LUZIO
Today, we gather to welcome this
child into the embrace of our
faith. May his journey be guided by
the light of God's love...
Don Ofredo's watchful eyes catch sight of Raniero pacing
away. A pang of empathy grips him.
Overcome with emotion, he moves quietly towards the entrance.
118.
This catches the attention of Pantaleone, who watches with
concern as Don Ofredo nears the exit.

Don Ofredo, where are you going?

Reconciliation and Baptism
EXT. VITERBO CATHEDRAL - DAY
Raniero footsteps echo on the quiet cobblestones.
DON OFREDO (O.S.)
Raniero!
Raniero spins to see Don Ofredo at the top of the steps with
Madolina holding her baby. The rest have also emerged.
DON OFREDO
Come, my son. Forgive me for the
wrongs I’ve caused you.
Don Ofredo extends a hand.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
What do you think you are doing?
DON OFREDO
What I should have done long ago.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
That man has been excommunicated!
It's sacrilege to consort with a
defector from our faith!
DON OFREDO
That man is my daughter’s husband!
That makes him family as well.
Pantaleone stands frozen, shocked by Don Ofredo's words.
DON OFREDO
He has borne the penalty of our
redemption, sacrificing all--even
his own honor--so that we might
reclaim our lives. Is this not the
path that Christ himself laid out
for us?
119.
Madolina weeps, moved by Don Ofredo's words. Raniero rushes
to embrace him. Then side by side, they face Pantaleone.
DON OFREDO
Label me apostate! A heretic if you
must, but I will not forsake my
family.
TEOBALDO (O.S.)
I would never expect you to.
All eyes turn as TEOBALDO AND HIS COMPANIONS have arrived,
dismount their horses.
Everyone bows before Teobaldo as he approaches them, a calm
and peaceful demeanor about him.
CARDINAL PANTALEONE
Your Holiness... this Raniero Gatti
stands excommunicated for his
actions, having shown no
repentance.
TEOBALDO
For what? Acting justly? I've heard
of the misfortunes plaguing the
good citizens of Viterbo.
A throng of awed villagers joins the group attending the
Baptism as they stand behind Raniero and his family.
TEOBALDO
As it seems to me, the people were
justified in imposing these
restrictions, and they accomplished
their intended outcome. Henceforth,
all elections will adhere to these
rules until a decision is reached.
Teobaldo reassures Raniero with a pat on the shoulder.
TEOBALDO
Raniero, you are released from
excommunication, and I welcome you
back into the fold. Your loyalty to
justice outweighs any decree of the
Church. Let it be known that
courage and integrity shall guide
our decisions.
RANIERO
Thank you, Holy Father.
120.
Teobaldo glances at Madolina, then to her child. He looks
toward the nearby fountain.
TEOBALDO
May I have the honor of baptizing
your child?
MOMENTS AFTER
A tranquil sunlit fountain, surrounded by the awestruck
crowd. Teobaldo stands beside the flowing waters, cradling
the infant. Teobaldo and Madolina nearby, brimming with joy.
TEOBALDO
Francesco Gatti, I baptize you in
the name of the Father, the Son,
and the Holy Spirit. May your life
be as pure and steadfast as these
waters that flow before us.
Teobaldo dips the infant, then returns him to his mother. She
takes little Francesco to Francesca so that she may hold him.
Francesca, overwhelmed, takes the tiny creature in her arms.
Her toughness finally cracks as tears roll down her cheeks.
As the glorious scene unfolds, the CHURCH BELLS proudly
resonate through the streets of Viterbo.
FADE OUT.
TEXT OVERLAY:
The Papal Conclave in Viterbo lasted for 2 years, 9 months,
and 3 days, making it the longest in history.
When Teobaldi Visconti ascended as Pope Gregory X, it was
hailed as a victory for the French faction’s expansionist
agenda.
It did not yield the results they expected...
Pope Gregory X didn't fully align with their plans, proving
to be an independent and reform-minded leader. Despite not
being a priest at the time of his election, he became one of
the most respected pontiffs of his era.
The restrictions imposed on the Cardinals in Viterbo—-bread,
water, and isolation--are still used to this day...
Thankfully, they've retired the idea of removing the roof.
