INT. ST. SIMON’S CHURCH - NIGHT
Pale moonlight filters through the cracks in the ceiling,
casting a web of shadows across the worn pews. The hymn board
still displays the number 616, a haunting reminder of more
hopeful times.
AT CONFESSION BOX
DRUG USERS prepare their drugs. GEORGE, 64, wearing a tatty
army jacket sits amongst his fellow homeless friends. His eyes
drift to Delannie’s trainers, comparing shoe sizes with a
calculating look.
AT AISLE
Delannie grips a combat knife. She passes ANGELO, an immortal
angel, whose vessel is a 30-year-old male with long flowing
hair. He stands still like a statue, observing her with an
otherworldly calm. She saunters to the empty altar banging her
hand off every curved pew end, creating a haunting rhythm.
Church bells start ringing, getting louder.

A Prayer in the Shadows
INT. CHURCH – CONT’D
Hymn number 333 has changed to 221. Delannie kneels before the
dilapidated altar, pale moonlight filtering through the
shattered stained-glass windows. This dim, fragmented light
reflects her inner turmoil, doubt, and sense of brokenness as
she questions her faith and identity. She genuflects and sits
on a part of a pew with no splinters.
DELANNIE
(sotto voce)
Hey God, you there? I could really
use a hug right now.
Silently, Angelo moves and kneels beside her, his presence
gentle but firm.
ANGELO
(sitting down)
Can I sit with you?
Startled, Delannie flinches, her eyes darting towards the
confession box.
DELANNIE
Seriously? Your friends are back
there.
She slides further down the pew, resuming her prayer. Angelo
watches her intently, undeterred.
ANGELO
I’m sorry. Let’s start again. My
name is Angelo.
Delannie looks up, a mix of disbelief and curiosity in her
eyes. Angelo points to a stained-glass window above the altar
of “The Sacrifice of Issac by Abraham.” The angel is depicted
3
with his wings spread out, and a halo above his head.
ANGELO (CONT’D)
Abraham pushed me away when I told
him to sacrifice his son, Isaac.
DELANNIE
Old Testament Abraham? How high are
you?
ANGELO
About six feet.
Angelo leans closer to Delannie, his voice soothing yet
powerful.
ANGELO (CONT’D)
Do you believe in God?
DELANNIE
Do you?
ANGELO
I have to. I was Jesus’s bodyguard.
God has been hearing your prayers.
He sent me to help you.
Angelo turns to his right to face Delannie, establishing eye
contact.
ANGELO (CONT’D)
Ask me anything.
DELANNIE
OK, here’s a question. I want a
hug. But look. Jesus is nailed to
the cross. So, no hug for me. Some
bodyguard you turned out to be.
ANGELO
Jesus chose to suffer… and die… so
you could live the life YOU choose.
Delannie’s expression softens slightly, but she remains
guarded.
DELANNIE
I may not have nails in my hand,
but trust me, I’m dying inside.
4
ANGELO
God wants you to live your best
life.
DELANNIE
I’m struggling here, and you’re
giving me cheesy one-liners from
church billboards. I’ve seen them
all. Jesus died for your sins.
Carpenter needs joiners. The Bible
is vague about people like me.
ANGELO
"Male or female, He loves them the
same."

God, it’s me Delannie. Are you
there?

around the church.

with that quote!!

ANGELO
Oh God. I’m so sorry. Some humans
use the Old Testament to justify
their hate. That’s not what that
quote means. Did you know that
Rabbinical scholars talked of six
other genders beyond the
binary? God loves everyone He
creates.
DELANNIE
Yeah, well, I’m off. Enjoy your
drugs.
Delannie stands up, but Angelo reaches out gently.
ANGELO (O.C)
Don't go yet, Delannie.
Angelo chases after her. Delannie turns back towards Angelo
and grips her knife.
DELANNIE
Move out of my way. NOW!
Angelo takes a step to the side, watching her intently as she
strides confidently towards the door.
DELANNIE (CONT’D)
When God created me, He was wrong.
Do you hear that God? You messed up
big time.
Angelo retreats backward.
Delannie pushes the tip of her knife into the palm of her
hand. Blood trickles down the blade and drips onto the altar.
Angelo’s eyes widen with concern.
ANGELO
Aqedah.
DELANNIE
I’ve no idea what that means.
ANGELO
You’ll find out.
Delannie looks at Angelo, searching for answers in his calm
demeanor. She walks back to the pews, Angelo a few steps
behind.

ANGELO (O.C) (CONT’D)
"I praise you because I am
fearfully and wonderfully made. I
know that full well." Appropriate?
DELANNIE
I don’t know why I’m still
listening to you.
ANGELO
Give me two minutes. Please.
Angelo gives Delanie a hanky. Their hands touch briefly. Her
hand trembles as she takes it, feeling an unfamiliar comfort.
Angelo gestures for Delannie to sit next to him.
George, zipping up his army jacket, sidles up next to
Delannie. She quickly thrusts the bloody knife in his face,
her eyes fierce.
DELANNIE
Do you mind? This is a private
conversation.
Unfazed, George brushes past Angelo, who watches with a calm,
knowing gaze.
ANGELO
The Samaritan woman at the well.
Delannie gestures impatiently for Angelo to move further away.
ANGELO (CONT’D)
She was like you. She needed
someone to talk to.
DELANNIE
OK, I’ll bite. Have you talked to
Jesus today?
ANGELO
Yes, I’m an angel. I’ve told him
all about you already. Last night,
I hugged him in the garden of
Gethsemane.
7
DELANNIE
That’s right, you’re Angelo the
“angel.” Angels' name end in iel,
like Brakkiel or Zadkiel.
ANGELO
Zadkiel is one of my brothers. Now
do you believe me? I’d show you my
harp but it’s away getting
restrung.
DELANNIE
I’m so not in the mood for jokes.

INT. LIVING ROOM – DAY
Delannie’s father, NOEL, dressed casually, stands in the
doorway with a beer in hand. The cozy room is decorated for
Christmas, with a faint glow from the lights on a tree.
Teenage Daniel (14), still presenting as male, sits on the
couch, nervously holding a wrapped gift.
DANIEL
Dad, I got this for you. Thought
you’d like it.
NOEL
Is this more nonsense, self-help
mumbo jumbo?
DANIEL
It’s not just any book. It’s
about….understanding people, you
know, who are different.
Noel raises an eyebrow, tearing the wrapping paper carelessly.
He glances at the title: “Living Authentically: Embracing Your
True Self.”
8
DANIEL (CONT’D)
I thought it might help you
understand me better.
Noel freezes for a moment, then bursts into a short, derisive
laugh.
NOEL
Understand you better? You’re
fourteen, Danny. You barely know
yourself. What am I supposed to do
with this?
DANIEL
I just… thought you’d want to know
me.
Noel tosses the book onto the coffee table. The sound of
Noel’s heavy footsteps fades, leaving Daniel alone on the
couch, staring at the crumpled wrapping paper and the unopened
book. He runs his hand on the couch where Noel should be.

NOEL (O.C)
Of course. Who do you think your

NOEL (O.C)
Where are you?
DELANNIE
(looking around)
I’m just heading back from uni.
NOEL (O.C)
Did you make any new friends today?
DELANNIE
There was this one girl who seemed
nice. We’re in the same class so
I’ll try to say hi to her tomorrow.
NOEL (O.C)
That’s my girl. Fancy a film later?
Your pick.
George looms over her, his eyes fixated on her shoes. Delannie
notices him and stiffens.
DELANNIE
Could do.
Delannie sits in the second pew from the front.
NOEL (O.C)
I love you, Delannie.

Love you too, Dad.

GEORGE
I like your shoes. I was thinking I
could take them off your hands,
well, your feet to be exact. And
your phone.
Delannie shuffles away from him into a shaft of natural
light, her grip on the knife tightening.
GEORGE (CONT’D)
Are you a boy dressed up as a girl?
DELANNIE
NO! I'm a girl dressed as a girl.
George TUTS dismissively and makes the sign of the cross.
Delannie stands toe to toe with George.
GEORGE
Your shoes and phone. Hand them
over. I won’t ask you again.
George brandishes a massive knife, its blade glinting
ominously. Angelo sighs deeply. A brilliant white light
floods the space as Angelo spreads his majestic, angelic
wings. A brilliant white light floods the space as Angelo
spreads his majestic, angelic wings... The church, now bathed
in celestial light, seems less foreboding. George recoils in
terror, dropping his knife.
ANGELO
That’s the first time since forever
that I’ve interfered and revealed my
true identity. That’s it, I’m going
to hell.
Delannie, still clutching her knife, looks at Angelo, her face
a mixture of awe and confusion.
DELANNIE
You’re an angel?
11
ANGELO
Maybe hell is a slight exaggeration,
but the demons can find me now.
That’s the one rule that should
never be broken. Maybe no one in the
Silver City noticed.
DELANNIE
I’ve never seen anything as
beautiful as that before.
ANGELO
And you are wonderfully made,
Delannie. Never forget that.
Delannie, tears welling up, nods slowly. The church, now
bathed in celestial light, seems less foreboding, a glimmer of
hope piercing through the darkness.
ANGELO (CONT’D)
Look at the window over there. Each
piece is jagged and sharp on its
own, but when arranged in the
light, they form something
beautiful. That’s what God sees in
us, even in the brokenness.”
Delannie kneels at the altar and Angelo sits on the pew.
As she turns round.
FX: The two Angelos merge together, the present with the
Angelo from the previous scenes.
Angelo places his hands near Delannie’s head. He waits for her
approval to lay them on her. She nods, granting permission.
Her whole body trembles as a kaleidoscopic wave of light
emanates from Angelo’s touch. When he removes his hands,
Delannie’s hand has stopped bleeding.
ANGELO
We all go through changes.
DELANNIE
I saw a cartoon where an ugly
duckling goes to a doctor and tells
her she doesn't feel right. Do you
know what the doctor tells the
duckling?
12
ANGELO
What?
DELANNIE
You’re not ugly. You’ll not be a
duckling all your life. One day you
will be a beautiful swan. Then the
duckling's life started to make
sense.
ANGELO
It's what's on the inside that
counts. Always has been. "People
look at the outward appearance. But
the Lord looks at the heart." It’s
in your scroll.
DELANNIE
My scroll? What do you mean?
ANGELO
You are a messenger of the Lord.
Read the scroll and speak the words
to your generation.
DELANNIE
No one would listen to me.
ANGELO
Why? Because you’re trans? Society
will just have to catch up.
DELANNIE
Hang on. I’m going to be a
messenger. I can predict the
future, yeah? I’m going to buy a
Lotto ticket right now.
ANGELO
I hate to burst your bubble, but
no. Messengers teach the truth and
interpret the word of God.
DELANNIE
The word of God. What does that
mean? The Bible?
ANGELO
No, in the beginning, was the word
and Jesus was the word.
13
DELANNIE
Jesus was there at the beginning of
time and made the world.
ANGELO
It will all come naturally to you.
Angelo reaches into his robe and presents a scroll to
Delannie.
DELANNIE
This looks old. What is it?
ANGELO
The Gospel of Simon.
DELANNIE
There are only four gospels.
ANGELO
In the Bible, but many were
written.
Delannie carefully opens the scroll revealing unfamiliar
writings.
DELANNIE
If I do decide to be a messenger,
and that’s a massive if, I'm not
becoming celibate.
ANGELO
You’ll always have free will.
DELANNIE
Truth?
ANGELO
Yeah. Angels can’t lie, well, apart
from Lucifer. I never did like him.
DELANNIE
I’d ask if being a messenger comes
with a salary but I guess you’d
say: “My reward is great in
heaven.”
ANGELO
I haven’t had a chat like this in a
long, long time. Reminds me of the
good old days.
Angelo shudders.
14
ANGELO (CONT’D)
Two envoys from the Roman Curia,
Vatican fixers, are on their way.
They want to destroy your scroll.
Angelo jumps up, urgency in his movements. Delannie jumps up
after him.
ANGELO (CONT’D)
Delannie, you just prayed to God
asking Him to tell you that
everything is going to be OK.
Everything is going to be OK.
Messenger of the Lord. Yes, or no?
Angelo raises his wings, and a brilliant white light
illuminates the stained-glass window of the Sacrifice of Isaac
above the altar.
STAINED GLASS WINDOW – Left side: Angelo grips Abraham’s hand,
preventing him from bringing down the fateful blow.
Angelo guides Delannie’s hand over the scroll. She resists at
first, then allows her finger to move over the text.
DELANNIE
E. N. En. T. A. E. Tae. En tae.
The massive wooden doors creak shut behind Angelo and Delannie
as footsteps echo in the dimly lit church. Shadows shift
across the walls as four Vatican FIXERS emerge: two slipping
through the back pews, and two others flanking from the side
aisles. In the center aisle, FR. GABRIEL, 44, strides forward,
his eyes fixed on Angelo.
FR. GABRIEL
(extending a hand)
I’ll take that now.
With a swift motion, two Fixers seize Angelo’s arms, their
grips like iron. Another clamps onto Delannie, who struggles
as George, keeping low, edges away in the chaos.
DELANNIE
That’s not yours!
FR. GABRIEL
And it certainly isn’t yours, young
man.
15
Angelo catches Delannie's eye, subtly signalling her to stay
calm, though tension lines his face.
FR. GABRIEL (CONT’D)
It’s lighter than I thought….
Speaking of which.
He reaches into his pocket, producing an old silver Zippo
lighter, flicking it open.
The lighter sputters in his hand, casting fleeting sparks that
reflect in his steely gaze.
DELANNIE
Angelo, show them your wings.
Angelo tries to pop out his wings, but nothing happens.
The Fixers cluster protectively around Fr. Gabriel, leaning in
over the Gospel, curious but wary. Fr. Gabriel flips open a
page, his brow furrowing.
FR. GABRIEL
What does this part say? Huh. They
never told me the Gospel had
this….interpretation.
Angelo’s eyes narrow, his calm now laced with defiance.
ANGELO
Good huh? Bad huh?
FR. GABRIEL
It doesn’t matter. I’ve got my
orders.
Finally, the Zippo catches. Flames leap to life, casting a
sinister glow as he lowers it to the corner of the Gospel. The
ancient pages begin to smolder, the scent of burning parchment
thick in the air.
Before the flames can spread, George and five of his homeless
comrades spring into action, surging from the shadows and
crashing into the Fixers. Angelo stomps on the flaming Gospel,
extinguishing the embers. Fr. Gabriel stumbles back, shock and
anger flickering across his face.
Amid the struggle, Delannie drops to her knees before the
altar, her voice a fierce whisper.
16
DELANNIE
Aqedah.
Delannie looks up and catches the eyes of Abraham from the
“Sacrifice of Isaac” stained glass window.
STAINED GLASS WINDOW – BOTTOM PART: Abraham is kneeling on his
knees in the same way Delannie is.
George kneels beside her, his head bowed in solidarity, while
Georges’s allies overpower the stunned Vatican Fixers, pinning
them against the cold stone floor. The church, once still, is
now alive with defiance and the murmur of whispered prayers.
DELANNIE (V.O)
Look at the person beside you. We
are all songs, and daughters, of
God.
Delannie takes off her shoes and gives them to George, her
face serene with a newfound purpose. She applies her makeup.
DELANNIE (CONT’D)
God, say hello to the real Delannie.
As Delannie kneels at the altar, the faint sound of church
bells begins to echo. The front door opens, and white light
illuminates the vestibule. Two white doves fly around the
roof. White celestial light illuminates text on a stained
glass window showing Jesus comforting the Samaritan woman.
“Come to me all who are weary, and I will give you rest.”
Within the light, faint outlines of two doves can be seen,
ethereal and luminous, flying toward a vivid sunrise.
The imagery intensifies as the doves break through the glass.
Angelo opens the left door for Delannie to walk through. She
stops, opens the right door, and walks through it.

She follows the path laid by the blossoms, her footsteps

FR. GABRIEL
Of course, Holy Father. I will get

Angelo follows Fr. Gabriel from a distance. In the shadows,
unseen by any mortal person, GABRIEL, folds his wings into his

starts to regroup, focusing on Noel. Delannie continues to
hide at the edge of the stage.
