SUPER: CHICAGO - TRENDING NIGHT
The SOUTH LOOP quakes with nervous energy as a disorderly
line gathers near the faded and ratty exterior of O'ROURKE'S
while a BOUNCER attempts to manage the crowd.
BOUNCER
We're full!
The line scatters toward other bars in the vicinity.
INT. O'ROURKE'S - BAR - NIGHT
A bustling space with scuffed floors and inebriated patrons
buzzes as every eye rests on the televisions mounted behind
the bar.
THE HOST (ON TV)
Before you lock your answer, I'll
repeat the question. Erin, what's
your most played song on Spotify?
THE HOST (40s)--androgynous, perpetually bored, sickly sweet,
but sinister and wearing a garish gown--smiles ahead of a
glowing backdrop reading "Trending" as ERIN (20s)--jittery,
hip and influencer chic--shuffles on a cell phone camera
superimposed in the corner of the frame.
ERIN (ON TV)
(unsure)
God, I don't know...I...
(realizing)
Wait. Is it All Star by Smash
Mouth?
DRUNK PATRON (O.S.)
Shrek!
THE HOST (ON TV)
Is that your final answer, Erin?
ERIN (ON TV)
I guess.
THE HOST (ON TV)
You guess?
ERIN (ON TV)
Fine. Yes.
Intense music pulsing from the televisions mingle with muted
laughter and a barrage of shushing.
THE HOST (ON TV)
With her response of All Star by
Smash Mouth...Erin Payne...
As the music fades out, Erin's TikTok account appears on the
screen followed by a blue check mark emerging beside it.
THE HOST (ON TV) (CONT'D)
You are now an influencer!
The patrons cheer and jeer in unison as Erin's TikTok
followers increase by the thousands with each passing moment.
THE HOST (ON TV) (CONT'D)
The world will be watching.
As the initial excitement dissipates, Erin's image
disappears, but The Host remains on the screen.
THE HOST (ON TV) (CONT'D)
Before we leave you this evening, I
have one more surprise for all of
you faithful Trenders out there.
The patrons lean in...hanging on every word.
THE HOST (ON TV) (CONT'D)
Since we began making your dreams
of influencer stardom a reality
seven short years ago, over twenty
million entrants have tried their
hand at realizing their hopes of
instant fame.
Quiet. Hearts racing. Hopes of glory hanging in the balance.
THE HOST (ON TV) (CONT'D)
But amazingly, only two thousand
four hundred eighty-eight Trenders
have applied for every game since
we went live. So, to those of you
faithful few...this one's for you
The patrons release a collective groan.
THE HOST (ON TV) (CONT'D)
We are going to select one of you
to take part in a very special
edition of Trending...tomorrow
night. Stay tuned Trenders because
after this, things will never be
the same.
(singsong)
Until then.
INT. O'ROURKE'S - RESTROOM - NIGHT
Inside of a cramped bathroom stall, sharpie art blankets the
walls.
MARIA JONES (20s)--the antithesis of influencer, mousy and
alternative fashion--sits on a closed toilet and stares wide-
eyed at a message on her phone.
CLOSE ON: PHONE
"MARIA JONES! Your persistence has paid off! You've been
entered into a VERY SPECIAL Trending drawing. Good luck ;)"
She reads and rereads the message...growing more excited with
every look...
DRUNK PATRONS (O.S.)
Shots! Shots! Shots!
...but is slapped back to reality.

Tensions at O'Rourke's
INT. O'ROURKE'S - BAR - NIGHT
Maria makes her way through the intoxicated crowd before
dropping below the bar and popping up on the other side.
NORA MATTINGLY (40s)--consistently agitated, frumpy and
unwashed--scowls as Maria returns to her post.
NORA
It'd be great if you could stay on
the floor instead of checking out
on the busiest night of the month.
MARIA
(masking contempt)
Sure thing.
Nora gives a disapproving glare at Maria's homemade outfit
with jagged stitching and multicolored fabric.
NORA
That outfit is...interesting.
MARIA
I'll let the designer know.
NORA
Did one of your friends make it?
MARIA
No, I did.
NORA
(embarrassed)
I didn't mean anyth--
MARIA
(bruised)
It's fine.
A BELLIGERENT PATRON pops his head out at the opposite end of
the bar.
BELLIGERENT PATRON
Anyone want to do their job back
there?!
NORA
(to Maria)
Look at what I'm wearing. It's not
like I know fashion.
Maria leaves Nora hanging and breaks for the belligerent
patron.
BELLIGERENT PATRON
Didn't mean to interrupt your
social hour.
MARIA
What can I get for you?
BELLIGERENT PATRON
You could start with a better
attitude.
MARIA
(stoic)
Anything else?
BELLIGERENT PATRON
It's just a joke, sweetheart. Get
me a gin and tonic.
MARIA
Coming right up.
As she reaches for a bottle of Seagram's on the backbar...
BELLIGERENT PATRON (O.S.)
Do I look cheap to you?
REBECCA CURRENCE (20s)--carefree, jovial and unassuming--
places a reassuring hand on Maria's shoulder before reaching
above and pulling down a bottle of Hendrick's.
REBECCA
How long did the new outfit take
you to make?
Maria mixes a drink, but she isn't paying attention.
MARIA
About a week.
REBECCA
God, I wish I had that kind of
talent; guess I'll be stuck making
drinks 'til the day I die.
MARIA
At this rate, I'll be right here
with you. Besides, Nora thinks it
looks like shit.
REBECCA
Bitch is still wearing the same
pair of Keds she had when we
started working here. I don't
really think I'd be taking fashion
advice from her.
Hendrick's spills to the floor...a slight overpour.
MARIA
(muttering)
Goddammit.
BELLIGERENT PATRON
Christ, does anyone in this place
know how to make a drink?!
Rebecca grabs the Hendrick's and restarts.
MARIA
(agitated)
I've got it.
REBECCA
You're fine. Take a breather.
Maria mouths "thank you," and heads to the back.

Secrets at O'Rourke's
INT. O'ROURKE'S - BAR - LATER
Maria wipes down the bar as the final patrons make their way
to the door.
Nora heads back while juggling piles of receipts before
surveying the back corner.
NORA
Could one of you wipe that table
down?
REBECCA
(mock excitement)
We gotta get everything ready for
the big day tomorrow.
NORA
Don't remind me; I was stressed
enough before they dropped another
Trending show on top of the
appearance.
Rebecca reaches out an expectant hand.
NORA (CONT'D)
(annoyed)
How about you finish your shift
before cashing out?
Nora grumbles away while dropping receipts along her path.
REBECCA
Remind me why we still work for
her?
MARIA
Because she's the only one that'll
hire a couple of washed up
twentysomethings.
REBECCA
Washed up?! Speak for yourself. I
snagged 10 new TikTok followers
this week. At this rate, I'll be on
Trending in no time.
MARIA
(sarcasm)
Dream big.
Rebecca grabs a rag and cleaner while Maria pulls a banner
sized poster of VIVIAN TURNER (20s)--plastic, polished and
living her best "Mean Girls" life--with "Chicago's Only
Trending Winner," emblazoned on the bottom and hangs it.
As Rebecca approaches the corner booth, she recoils at
remnants of chicken wings and stale chips.
REBECCA
Is Vivian that hard up for
followers that she needs to do a
signing in this shithole?
MARIA
Has to save face by mingling with
the little people.
REBECCA
You all went to the same high
school, right? How was she?
MARIA
(lying)
Dunno. I kept to myself, so we
never really talked.
Maria heads toward a nearby mop and bucket and soaks the
floor.
REBECCA
Probably better that way from the
sound of it. She's lost a ton of
clout after the video of her
chewing out that barista went
viral. She tries that shit with me,
and I'll jam another camera in her
face. That should buy me at least,
like, five minutes of fame, right?
MARIA
Maybe two.
REBECCA
(curious)
You ever thought about applying?
MARIA
(surprised)
For Trending? Me? No.
REBECCA
Same. Something about having
everyone looking through your
private shit is just...scary.
MARIA
Got some skeletons hiding in that
studio apartment you haven't told
me about?
Rebecca's phone erupts with notifications on the bar.
REBECCA
No more than anyone else. I guess
we all have a few secrets, though,
right?
MARIA
Speak for yourself.
It dings once more.
REBECCA
Can you check that for me?
Maria drops the mop and grabs Rebecca's phone.
CLOSE ON: PHONE
"MEET THE TRENDING ANNIVERSARY HOPEFULS."
Maria's heart races...fear swells.
REBECCA (CONT'D)
(concerned)
What is it?
She swipes the notification away.
MARIA
(stammering)
Just spam.
REBECCA
You sure? You look like you just
saw a ghost.
MARIA
It's nothing. I didn't sleep much
last night.
Maria tosses the phone on the bar and gets back to mopping.
REBECCA
Maybe if you did more than work you
wouldn't be so tired all of the
time.
NORA (O.S.)
Maria, why didn't you tell me?!
Maria is frozen as Nora exits the back room; her cover is
blown. She waits for Nora to reveal...
NORA (CONT'D)
You went to high school with
Vivian?!
Secret safe...for a while longer.
MARIA
(relieved)
Must've slipped my mind.
NORA
Does that boyfriend of yours even
know you went to school with a
celebrity?
Maria's phone vibrates.
REBECCA
Right on cue. Why've we never met
him; is he an ex-con or something?
CLOSE ON: PHONE
"DAD" glows on the screen.
NORA (O.S.)
Watch it. I used to date an ex-con.
Maria pushes the phone into her pocket.
MARIA
(annoyed)
I didn't and I already told you
he's not my boyfriend.
REBECCA
Then what is he?
MARIA
Complicated.

She savors the silence as a shadow emerges at the end of the

A barely audible yelp escapes Maria as she turns from the

Never went to sleep.

INT. MARIA'S APARTMENT - KITCHENETTE - CONTINUOUS
Maria covers her nose at the emergence of an ungodly stench
as she steps into the cramped space covered in filth.
The sink is filled with dirty dishes while the stained floors
are littered with empty liquor bottles. In the center of the
floor, an open pizza box covered in piss.
RONALD
(choked)
I hate their pepperoni.
Maria kicks the box into the corner and heads toward the
cabinet over the sink...blood boiling.
Inside, two bottles of Tito's remain.
RONALD (CONT'D)
I wanted you to grab me something

did you not see my texts?
MARIA
Didn't have time to look.
RONALD
I bet you were too busy making

MARIA
I was just busy getting a paycheck,
so we can pay the rent.
She heads for the pizza box...has to get out of here.
RONALD
(sarcasm)
That two-hundred a week is really
putting a dent in it.
MARIA
(incredulous)
It's more than you make.
RONALD
Like hell. We both know we couldn't

disability check, and after all
I've given up for you, the least
you could do is get a decent

MARIA
(trembling)
You don't think I've given anything

She grabs the box...keep it together.
MARIA (CONT'D)
I was going to move out of this
place, remember?
RONALD
To chase a fucking pipe dream.
MARIA
(furious)
It wasn't a pipe dream.
RONALD
(surprised)
It wasn't? That's weird because I
seem to remember you flunking out
of The Art Institute.
(wistful)
I remember when you had
ambition...when you had goals. Real
goals. You wanted to be a doctor,
but then you decided that wasn't
good enough for you; you wanted to
play dress up for the rest of your
life.
(biting)
How'd that work out for you?
MARIA
At least I tried.
RONALD
Did any of that trying make you
goddamn dime? Last I checked, nope.
All I see is a pile of debt you'll
never crawl out of.
MARIA
(defiant)
You're right, dad. A paragon of
ambition like you would know best.
I guess all of the most successful
people drink a bottle of vodka in
their underwear every night, right?
The slight stings him.
RONALD
You think I want to do that? Only
reason I drink is cause it helps
the pain, but that doesn't matter
to you. Why get me the pain pills I
need when you can blow our savings
on more of those drugs that never
work?
MARIA
(growing fury)
Don't start.
RONALD
Don't start what? Don't start
telling you the truth?
MARIA
(whispering)
They help my head.
RONALD
Maybe you wouldn't need to fix your
head if you could just own what you
did.
She launches the box to the floor and pushes by him.
RONALD (CONT'D)
Nothing you do can ever change
that, though; no matter how many of
those crazy pills you jam down your

Fading Dreams
INT. MARIA'S APARTMENT - MARIA'S BEDROOM - NIGHT
Maria is enveloped in darkness for a moment as tears and
grief grip every pore, but something in the silence soothes
until...whispers reverberate in the dark.
Frozen, she can't turn the lights on, but the whispers won't
stop until, finally, she flips the switch.
Colored lights dangle like stars from the ceiling. Billie
Eilish, Mr. Beast, Taylor Swift and mid 2000's My Chemical
Romance oversee the room from their respective spots on the
walls.
She tosses her keys on a scuffed table beside her bed with a
sewing machine perched in the center before collapsing atop
her bed.
Above, a ceiling blanketed in a collage of photographs
showing the 84 Trending contestants living their dreams.
She can't bear to look at the false hope anymore and bounds
up to rip them down. They fall into a glistening confetti
that blankets the floor.
One photograph remains...it's practically indistinguishable
due to a smattering of x's smeared through it, but a blank
spot in the graffitied image reveals Vivian.
Maria pulls it down, studies it.
MARIA
(whispering)
What makes you so special?
DING! An Instagram notification startles her.

Maria walks toward the crumbling exterior of O'Rourke's with
a hood covering her face and sunglasses blocking her eyes as

Tacked just below the poster, a handwritten sign reading,
"HOME OF TRENDING SUPERFAN, MARIA JONES!" A tremor of rage

Ben embraces Maria as Rebecca busies herself with another

BEN
I saw the news last night! I was
gonna call, but Viv had me running
around all morning.
MARIA
Since when do you work for Vivian?
I thought you were still with CAA?
BEN
Yeah, they did some...downsizing.
Anyway, I ran into her at a party
over the summer. One thing led to
another, and she offered me a job
scheduling meetings, press
events...boring shit.
MARIA
That has to be...fun.
BEN
It's temporary, but not bad.
MARIA
You don't sound so sure.
BEN
(amused)
I'll manage.
(changing the subject)
Anyway, what's going on with you? I
mean, besides the obvious. Last
time we talked, you'd reapplied to
the Art Institute; did the
application ever go through?
MARIA
No. Change of plans.
BEN
Sorry, I didn't mean t--
MARIA
Nothing to be sorry about. I'll get
back eventually.
BEN
So, in better news, are you ready
for the big announcement?
MARIA
I'm sure it'll be like every other
time I've applied.
Ben is disappointed, but not surprised.
BEN
Still the same Maria.
MARIA
What's that supposed to mean?
BEN
Self-deprecating to a fault. Always
doubting yourself.
MARIA
All part of my insecure charm.
Vivian steps into the bar and visibly recoils at the sight.
VIVIAN
This is...yeah.
She lifts a finger and beckons Ben.
BEN
Be right back.
Maria busies herself as Ben heads over to Vivian.
VIVIAN
(whispering)
You told me this place was classy
not a Texas Roadhouse.
BEN
(whispering)
People aren't exactly lining up to
book the woman that threw a drink

was cheap, and...we got lucky.
VIVIAN
(whispering)
This doesn't feel very lucky.
BEN
(whispering)
Remember Maria Jones?
Ben throws a nod toward Maria.
VIVIAN

BEN (CONT'D)

She's the only person in Chicago up

VIVIAN
(whispering)
Like she'll ever get it.
BEN
(whispering)
Maybe not, but think of how she

your wing, give her a few tips...we
could film the whole thing. A
little kindness could rehabilitate
the brand.
VIVIAN
(whispering)
I'm not risking what credibility I
have left on her.
BEN
(annoyed)
What aren't you understanding about
needing an image overhaul?
VIVIAN
(whispering)
I'm not the only one who needs one.
BEN
(whispering)
Yeah, but unlike you, I'm not one
step away from irrelevance.
VIVIAN
(whispering)
That's bold of you to assume you
were relevant to begin with.
NORA (O.S.)
I had no idea you were here, Ms.
Turner.
Vivian plasters on a fake smile as a disheveled Nora
scrambles over.
VIVIAN
You must be Nora!
NORA

I am.
VIVIAN
So nice to meet you! I was just

It's shabby chic and hipster all in

BEN
Right as always.
VIVIAN
See how well I trained him?
NORA
I'm so glad you like it. With
Trending last night, we were

VIVIAN
Well, I appreciate you having us.
NORA
It's no problem. We have a

MARIA
Can we not do this right now?
BEN
(puzzled)
Can we not act like friends? I
mean, I think that ship sailed in
Mr. Dunn's band class, but if you'd
like to rewind the clock.
Maria exhales a chuckle with two minutes until the Trending
announcement.
VIVIAN (O.S.)
(faux crying)
Trending gave me the platform to
create Vivian Cosmetics, which was
something I'd dreamed of since I
was a little girl walking The Mile.
But as great as that is, without
your support, none of my success
would be possible, so give
yourselves a round of applause.
The forced sobs cause Maria's body to recoil.
MARIA
(muttering)

BEN
The world doesn't want her kind of

human...someone real...someone like
you.
MARIA
How many times have you practiced
that line?
BEN
Once a week. Minimum.
MARIA
Good to know.
BEN
Can I interest you in some of that

Maria whirls toward a cracked mirror to find Ronald staring

RONALD (CONT'D)
Every secret. Every lie.
MARIA

RONALD
Don't kid yourself. Come this time

She reaches into her pocket and pulls out a worn brillo pad.
RONALD (CONT'D)
A murderer.
She squeezes the pad in her hands before dropping it into the

from the bar preluding hammering knocks on the door.
MARIA
Just a second!
Maria scrubs at her hands until the skin peels away and with
every scrape, Ronald's image melts into the basin that slowly
goes from clear to red.
She stops the sink and rubs her oozing pores before pocketing
the brillo.

MARIA

THE HOST (ON TV)

An automated "AWWWWW" reverberates from the Trending studio.
THE HOST (ON TV)

MARIA

reason I went to the Art Institute

I just want to make that dream she
and I had a reality.
THE HOST (ON TV)
You certainly don't need Trending

MARIA

No, I know that. I just want to

VIVIAN

THE HOST (ON TV)
Of course you are, but Maria oozes

A shriek emanates from Ronald's bedroom.

Did you know about this?! Is that

I...we don't need to get involved

Maria steps into the room as the two ignore her.
MARIA
Dad was like that when I got home.

See?! Case closed. Let's just

VIVIAN

You're out of your mind if you

(to Maria)
How many more bodies are we gonna

Maria pushes from the wall...rage building.
RONALD (V.O.)
Do it. Get rid of her.
VIVIAN
What're you gonna do. Kill me the
same way you killed him?
BEN
Viv, stop.
MARIA
You really want to talk to me like
that after everything you put me

Vivian bounds from the bed.
VIVIAN
(shocked)
You're joking, right? It was high

high school! Jesus Chris, Maria,
it's been eight years; shouldn't

MARIA
Don't think I haven't tried.
VIVIAN
Oh, I'm sure you did. Was killing

Maria levels three slaps to Vivian's cheek.
MARIA

I. Didn't. Kill. Him.
BEN
She's telling the truth. You didn't

MARIA
(to Ben)
Stop.
(to Vivian)
You think I wanted this to be my

working as a bartender at twenty

this apartment? This wasn't
supposed to be where I was. I had
plans. I had dreams, but I gave
them all up, and you want to know
the most fucked-up part? I started

bad things that happened to me.
Hell, maybe I did and this is just
another in a long list of shitty
consequences for what I did to my
mom. So, if you want to take my one
shot at happiness away me, I'm not
gonna stop you.
VIVIAN
(matter of fact)
I'm glad we're on the same page.
Vivian lifts her phone with 911 dialed.
MARIA
But I want you to remember one
thing. That call won't change
anything for you. If I go down, you
do too. That crowd out there is out
for blood, but not mine. They hate
you.
VIVIAN
And when they've found out what
you've done, they'll hate you too.
MARIA
The only difference is that they'll
forget me. I'll be old news before
morning. They won't forget you,
though.
VIVIAN
I wouldn't be so sure.
RONALD (V.O.)
Kill her.
MARIA
You have no business judging me.
You've walked all over anyone and
everyone to get to where you are,
so don't pretend to be some queen
of morality now.
VIVIAN
You don't know me.
MARIA
And you don't know me. And you
don't know what he was like. But if
you really think I made him drink
himself to death, call it in. Just
know I'm going to finish this game
with or without you.

bag a room away.
NADINE (O.S.)
I'm proud of you.
Nadine leans, unmarred, against the wall.
MARIA
(fighting tears)
Mom.
NADINE
You were always braver than me.
MARIA
You're the bravest person I've ever
met.
NADINE
(defeated)
If that were true, I would've left
your father a long time ago.
MARIA
You didn't have a choice.
NADINE
We all have choices. Now, you have
your own.
Maria is puzzled as the paramedics begin wheeling Ronald
toward her.
NADINE (CONT'D)
Do you let your mistakes define you
for the rest of your life...or do
you finally forgive yourself?
They stall as Maria stares transfixed on the wall.
EMT
Ma'am?
Startled from a trance, Maria bounds to her feet.
MARIA
Sorry.
EMT
It's fine. I'm sorry for your loss.
Maria watches as the gurney passes into the hallway and takes
a look back...Nadine is gone.
EMT (CONT'D)
I know this is a really bad time,
but...
Maria turns back to find the EMT holding a phone in their
hand.

I pictured it.
VIVIAN
Me neither.
MARIA
I'm sorry I slapped you.
VIVIAN
I deserved it.

A New Direction for 'Trending'
INT. PENTHOUSE APARTMENT - FOYER - NIGHT
SUPER: ONE YEAR LATER
Chopin echoes through a spacious PENTHOUSE APARTMENT.
Trending posters hang from pristine walls as marble floor
lead toward a darkened room illuminated by the glow of a
computer.
INT. MARIA'S APARTMENT - MARIA'S BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS
A bedroom devoid of clutter and dangling lights thrums with
life as Maria types rhythmically at her laptop.
She swigs a shot of bourbon before stopping.
A VIDEO comes into view on the monitor. In the video, Maria
appears rested while dressed in a tailored suit that allows
the scars along her arms to show.
MARIA (FROM COMPUTER)
When Trending began, the idea of
becoming an influencer was what so
many of us deemed as the ultimate
success. Unfortunately, that
success has a shelf life.
Maria approaches a window that spans the room as she looks at
the twinkling lights below.
MARIA (FROM COMPUTER) (CONT'D)
The truth is, our world is
changing. Why should influencers be
forced to lay their secrets bare
while those in power sit idly by
and monetize our misery while
living in secret? My predecessor
was right about one thing, there is
a change coming to Trending.
BEGIN MONTAGE:
In a cluttered MAILROOM an EMPLOYEE stops as they lift their
phone.
MARIA (ON PHONE) (CONT'D)
As your new Host, I promise to
change this game for the better.
That's why I'm here to announce
that from this point forward,
Trending is no longer about finding
America's next influencer.
Inside of a CORPORATE OFFICE, CUBICLE DWELLERS whisper
nervously.
MARIA (ON PHONE) (CONT'D)
We need a little more honesty,
Trenders, but it's not the
influencers that need to have the
light shone on them. No, it's those
that have used us to further their
own greed. So, are you being abused
by your boss? Tell us about it. Did
your spouse cheat? Feed them to us.
Let's give fame to the people that
deserve it, so they can never
escape what they've done.
Inside of a room resembling a call center, an INTERN scrolls
through text messages, private photographs and personal data.
A buzzer sounds as an OFFENSIVE TEXT alert flashes on an
overhead screen.
MARIA (FROM LAPTOP) (CONT'D)
For those of you that are hiding
your misdeeds, I want to promise
you something. Once we find you,
and we're certainly good at that,
you'll get to have your day in
court as we lay your sins bare
right here on Trending; the only
game show that you never want to be
a contestant on.
A laugh track erupts.
MARIA (FROM LAPTOP) (CONT'D)
I was able to forgive myself for
the many mistakes I made, but will
our contestants be able to forgive
themselves? We'll find out soon.
An entire folder labeled "BEN SANTIA" is moved into a folder
entitled: "PENDING TRENDING CONTESTANT."
END MONTAGE:
INT. PENTHOUSE APARTMENT - MARIA'S BEDROOM - NIGHT
Maria takes another drink as the video ends.
VIVIAN (O.S.)
You ready to have some fun, boss?
Maria turns to find Vivian holding a phone toward her. Just
behind her, Ronald's eyes glow in the corner. She bats the
image out of her mind.
MARIA
(shocked)
You got it?
Vivian nods as Maria nearly topples Vivian over as she wraps
her in a hug.

Birthday Confrontation
INT. THE SANTIA RESIDENCE - KITCHEN - DAY
Balloons hang beside a "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BEN" banner inside of
a cramped kitchen as a side door opens.
Ben--disheveled, drunk and unemployed-- pushes through the
door.
BEN
(slurred)
Sorry, I'm late.
Silence hangs over the house as Ben surveys the home.
BEN (CONT'D)
(puzzled)
Anyone home?
INT. THE SANTIA RESIDENCE - LIVING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER
ANITA SANTIA (60s) and STEVEN SANTIA (60s) sit on a couch
inside of a dated living room with shag carpet.
BEN (O.S.)
Hello?
Ben freezes at the sight of their cold glares.
BEN (CONT'D)
What's up?
Upon seeing the television, Ben's legs quake as he sees his
image with "America's next Trending Contestant" under the
picture.
ANITA
(appalled)
I thought you said this was all
over, Ben. Do you know what this
could do to us?!
STEVEN
Now, you need to come clean. What
else are we about to find out about
you?
Ben struggles for words before rushing for the door.

A Tragic Reckoning
EXT. THE SANTIA RESIDENCE - NIGHT
Ben's NEPHEW flies an action figure in the front yard as
party favors drift in the breeze while Ben sits in his
decaying sports car.
Ben jumps from the driver's seat and steps into the house
with a .32 caliber pistol.
Inaudible shouts push from inside as the nephew watches with
a blank expression.
After a beat, a gunshot.
Wails of sorrow and agony push from inside as Anita rushes
through the front door and vomits.
Ben's nephew approaches the house, but is waved away as
weeping continues echoing from inside.
He looks backwards to see NEIGHBORS gathering on the
sidewalks to watch.
EXT. THE SANTIA RESIDENCE - LATER
Anita stands on the porch as Ben's corpse is wheeled away.
She continues watching as she drops her phone into the
nephew's hands.
CLOSE ON: PHONE
He opens the Trending app. Maria instantaneously appears on
the screen.
MARIA (ON PHONE)
It's always horrible when someone
selected for Trending is unable to
face the truth of their actions,
but unfortunately, that's what
happened tonight. Our thoughts and
prayers go out to the Santia
family. But who am I kidding;
they're better off. As they say,
the show must go on! Let's
celebrate Ben's life by reliving
his most unforgivable sins.
