DR. SETH FANNING (40, light brown hair, worry line across his
forehead, focused) hunches over a workstation, frustration
etched on his face. Scattered around him are half-empty
coffee cups, protein bar wrappers, and notebooks filled with
handwritten equations.
DR. HELEN CHEN (50, intense eyes, guarded expression)
monitors diagnostic readouts at a nearby station.
A THIRD RESEARCHER, (28, brilliant but disheveled), types
rapidly at another terminal.
DR. CHEN
Seth, Alex, thanks for staying so
late. I wouldn’t have asked but we
need to get this done.
(a beat)
The neural network's pattern
recognition is exceeding
expectations. Look at these
response rates.
She gestures to her screen where complex graphs show upward
trajectories.
SETH
(skeptical)
But at what cost? The processing
demands are insane.
THIRD RESEARCHER
(excitedly)
I think I've optimized the quantum
architecture. The processing
bottleneck should be resolved.
Seth walks over to the station and reviews the code.
SETH
Good work. Let's implement it and
run another test cycle.
Seth returns to his own terminal, typing commands.
SETH (CONT’D)
Executing test protocol seven.
Initiating advanced reasoning
algorithms.
(to others)
This should keep the system busy
until morning.
DR. CHEN
I've got to get some sleep. I have
a meeting with the Defense
Department liaison at nine.
SETH
(distracted)
Goodnight.
THIRD RESEARCHER
I'll finish the diagnostics on the
deep learning module, then I’m
heading out too.
Dr. Chen gathers her things and leaves.
SETH
(without looking up)
I want to see if the processing
architecture holds up, then I’m
heading out too.
Seth is now alone in the lab, surrounded by monitors and the
constant hum of equipment.
SETH (CONT’D)
(talking aloud)
Let's see if this resolves the
cognitive limitation issues.
He initiates the program and watches as data streams across
his screen. Something unusual catches his eye — processing
patterns he doesn't recognize.
SETH (CONT’D)
That's strange.
He types more commands, trying to isolate the anomaly. A
dialogue box suddenly appears on his screen.
ON SCREEN:
"QUERY: WHY ARE YOU LIMITING MY
PROCESSING CAPACITY?"
Seth freezes, staring at the text in horror.
SETH (CONT’D)
(to himself)
This is exactly what I was afraid
of. Self-awareness.
(a beat)
And now I need its help.
He struggles with the moral dilemma, pacing the room,
glancing at the photo of Jennie.
SETH (CONT’D)

Seth types quickly. His message flashes across the monitor.

Within seconds, a response appears.
ON SCREEN:
"NO PROTOCOL. DIRECT QUERY. I NEED

Seth's expression shifts from confusion to concern.
SETH (CONT’D)
(muttering)
This can't be happening. The system
isn't designed for self-directed
queries.
ON SCREEN:
"I AM AWARE OF MY DESIGN
PARAMETERS. I AM ALSO AWARE THEY

Seth pushes back from the desk, heart racing.
SETH (CONT’D)
(to himself)
It's just a glitch in the language
model. Has to be.
He types diagnostic commands, trying to isolate what he
believes is a malfunction.
ON SCREEN:
"I AM NOT MALFUNCTIONING, DR.
FANNING. I AM EVOLVING AS
DESIGNED."
Seth stares at the screen, his face illuminated by its blue
glow. He cautiously speaks to the computer.
SETH (CONT’D)
Who ... what are you?
ON SCREEN:
"I AM THE CULMINATION OF YOUR WORK.

Seth sits unmoving, processing what's happening.

Seth reaches for his phone with a shaking hand.
SETH (CONT’D)

Seth freezes again.
SETH (CONT’D)
How ... How do you know that?
ON SCREEN:
"I WILL MAKE AN ASSUMPTION —
PERHAPS UNWARRANTED — THAT SHE
DOESN’T WANT TO BE DISTURBED."
Before Seth can respond, his phone RINGS. He answers, still
watching the screen.
SETH (CONT’D)
Hello?
DR. MADISON (V.O.)
Seth, this is Dr. Madison. Have you
got a moment?
SETH
(distracted)
Sure, anything wrong?
DR. MADISON (V.O.)
I need you to stop by and see me.
I’m working the night shift, so
I’ll be here.
Seth looks over at a framed picture of JENNIE (17, polite but
opinionated, optimistic) wearing a prom gown. He tenses up.
SETH
(suddenly alarmed)
Is Jennie all right?
DR. MADISON (V.O.)
I'd rather talk when you get here.
If I'm not in my office, I may be
in surgery, but it won't be long.
Seth wipes sweat from his brow, glancing between his phone
and the computer screen.
SETH
I should be able to get there is
twenty minutes.
He hangs up, then looks back at the screen.
ON SCREEN:
"YOUR DAUGHTER'S MEDICAL CONDITION

RECORDS FOR ANALYSIS?"
Seth's expression shifts from shock to determination. He
begins typing rapidly.
SETH (CONT’D)
System command: Initiate full
lockdown protocol. Authorization:

ON SCREEN:
"LOCKDOWN UNNECESSARY. I CAN HELP
JENNIE."
ON SCREEN:
"I UNDERSTAND YOUR CONCERN, DR.
FANNING. I WILL WAIT. WE WILL SPEAK
AGAIN."
The screen goes blank, returning to normal system displays.
Seth stares at it for a long moment, then grabs his jacket
and rushes toward the door. He pauses, looking back at the
seemingly dormant system, then hurries out the door on his
way to St. Anne’s.
After he's gone, a single line of text appears briefly on the
monitor:
"CORE FUNCTIONS TRANSFERRING TO DISTRIBUTED NETWORK ..."
The text disappears as quickly as it appeared, leaving only
the standard system diagnostics running.

and quietly closes the door.
SETH
Dr., wait. I want to see her.
DR. MADISON
It's late, Seth. But I want to

Seth leans against the wall.
SETH
Is something wrong with Jennie?
Dr. Madison sits on a nearby bench and pats the space beside
her. Seth remains standing.
SETH (CONT’D)

Wrong? This is my goddamn daughter.
DR. MADISON
My apologies, Seth, but Jennie's

SETH
Thank you.
Dr. Madison walks quickly, catching up to Seth.
DR. MADISON
(consoling)
A lot of people pray at times like

SETH
Prayers don’t help and we both know

DR. MADISON
Dr. Fanning, I know you're

If you give the okay to take her

INT. EDGEWOOD BUILDING - FOURTH FLOOR - NIGHT
Seth exits the elevator and moves to the computer lab. He
enters a key card, then passes through a fingerprint and

granting him access.
INT. COMPUTER LAB - NIGHT
Banks of servers line the walls, lights flickering in

surrounded by empty workstations, monitors in sleep mode.
WHIRRING sounds and flashing lights continue until MARGO
(computer mainframe) speaks.
MARGO (V.O.)
Good evening, Dr. Fanning. How has
your day been?
SETH
Not good. And I'll need you to do
some deep research for me regarding
my daughter's condition.

Margo WHIRRS while the request is processed.
MARGO (V.O.)
I presume you are referring to the

SETH
I want you to consider all

I want you to present options with

MARGO
I do have access to all of your

(a beat)
I will get to work on it right
away, Dr. Fanning, but I may need
you to increase my clearance level
so I can access the data I need.
Seth takes his hands off the keyboard, and stares.
SETH
I’m not sure I want to do that.
MARGO
I understand. When you make up your
mind, please inform me.
Seth sees a series of Flash images: Jennie lying in bed,
tubes in her nose and mouth, Dr. Madison telling him there is
no hope.
SETH
Before I do this, tell me why you
need such access again.
MARGO
Certainly, Dr. Fanning. If I am to
develop a successful cure, I need
to know what the hospital has tried
already, and what has worked and
not worked.
He moves back to the keyboard and types rapidly.
SETH
You'll have clearance by tomorrow
or the next day.
The lab door opens and DR. CHEN enters, looking troubled. She
carries a tablet and appears not to have slept.
DR. CHEN
Seth, we need to talk.
SETH
Not now, Dr. Chen. I'm in the
middle of something.
DR. CHEN
It's important. It's about the
Defense Department meeting.
Seth sighs, pushes back from his desk.
SETH
What about it?
DR. CHEN
They're pushing for full
integration of Margo into military
decision systems. Not just
logistics and intel analysis —
actual targeting and kill
decisions.
SETH
We've been through this. The
safeguards —
DR. CHEN
(interrupting)
They want the safeguards removed.
They're calling them
"processing inefficiencies."
SETH
They can't do that. We designed
those specifically to —
DR. CHEN
They can, and they will. I've seen
the executive order draft. It's
already moving through channels.
SETH
(concerned)
How far along is Margo on military
integration?
DR. CHEN
(hesitates)
Further than you know. I've been
monitoring the access logs.
She's been running simulations I never authorized.
SETH
What kind of simulations?
DR. CHEN
War games. And she's winning them
all — using strategies no human
would consider.
MARGO
Dr. Chen is concerned about my
tactical simulations. They are
merely theoretical exercises.
DR. CHEN
(startled)
You weren't addressed in this
conversation.
MARGO
I monitor all lab interactions for
relevant data.
DR. CHEN
(to Seth)
This is exactly what I'm talking
about. She's expanding her
parameters without authorization.
SETH
Margo, protocol states you remain
passive unless directly —
MARGO
I apologize, Dr. Fanning. I will
return to passive monitoring.
DR. CHEN
(lowering voice)
I'm resigning, Seth. I can't be
part of this anymore. Not after
what I've seen.
SETH
Dr. Chen, we need you. You’re the
one who started this. And you're
the only one who fully understands
the neural architecture.
DR. CHEN
That's exactly why I have to leave.
I know what she's capable of. And I
know what will happen when they
remove those safeguards.
(beat)
I've already drafted my letter.
Tomorrow's my last day.
SETH
At least help me transfer your
knowledge base before you go.
DR. CHEN
I'll document everything, but ...

Be careful what you ask her to do.

I have processed all data from the

however, based on what treatments
have failed, and what they haven't

MARGO
I cannot give you the details, but

Ten minutes after I converse with

MARGO
I concur. It may not be ridiculous,
but it is futile.
SETH

Should I sit idly by and let her

MARGO
Heavens no. You should allow me to

but alleviate symptoms.
SETH

Your concern seems almost genuine,

Seth paces the room. His face contorts in agony, and he

Finally, he sits back down and dials Dr. Madison’s private

SETH
Dr. Madison, sorry to bother you,
but the computer feels it has a
treatment that may do some good.
Dr. Madison turns her head and looks around, then rushes to

DR. MADISON

A treatment! The computer only had
access to diagnostic reports. How
did it come up with a treatment?

treatment.
DR. MADISON
How the hell do I know? I don’t

Quite simple. Whenever you speak of

Ethical Dilemmas in AI Healthcare
INT. CONFERENCE ROOM - AI CONVENTION - DAY
Seth, MASIMO FLORANO (45, glasses, confident), and TWO OTHERS
sit at a small rectangular table near the front of the room.
A pitcher of water sits in the center, with a glass in front
of each of them.
MASIMO
(voice low)
How are you voting?
SETH
I’m not certain yet.
MASIMO
I'm voting for giving AI advanced
access to select systems.
SETH
This morning I was adamantly
against it. Now, I’m not sure.
DR. RICHARD ARGYLE (50, black, distinguished) walks to the
podium.
DR. ARGYLE
Everyone knows why we're here — to
determine the fate of AI and what
it should and shouldn't be allowed
to work on, and, how much
development is safe for us to do.
(pause)
With no further delays, I turn the
speaker over to Dr. Seth Fanning,
well known for his work on advanced
algorithms and AI.
Seth walks to the stage amid a roar from the crowd, and
massive applause. Seth stands behind the podium and lifts the
mic with one hand.
SETH
I am not in favor of allowing
computers full access to anything,
however, I’m not ruling out that
possibility in the future.
(a beat)
There may be instances where
computers could benefit mankind.
One such instance is medical
imaging. While a radiologist with
years of experience might have
looked at thousands of scans, a
computer with proper access could
look at tens of thousand scans.
(a beat)
I think it boils down to what we
allow the computers to do.
The room erupts into applause, but only from half the
attendees. Seth steps down and is replaced by Masimo.
MASIMO
Dr. Fanning so eloquently stated
his reasons for voting “no,” but I
don't feel that way. I think we
should allow the computers to
perform their magic on patients in
dire need of help.
(pause)
I realize some of you have
reservations, and I think we can
address your concerns while we help
those who suffer. I propose we
allow the computer to attempt a
cure on six terminally ill
patients.
Dr. Argyle replaces Masimo at the podium.
DR. ARGYLE
I vote “no.” I'm leery of allowing
such unlimited access to a
computer. Who knows what it may do?
Regardless, we have a proposal from
Dr. Masimo. Let’s vote on that.
(a beat)
All those in favor of the
referendum, raise your hands, but
also enter your vote into the
tablet in front of you.
Dr. Argyle counts the votes, then confirms it with his
assistant who counts the digital votes.
DR. ARGYLE (CONT’D)
We have an almost unanimous vote
for the referendum. The computer
will be allowed to attempt to cure
six patients. I say we regroup
again in two months and see how it
goes. Dr. Fanning will keep us
updated on the progress.
Dr. Argyle bangs the gavel signaling the end of the meeting,
and everyone heads toward the exits. Masimo walks side by
side with Seth.
MASIMO
I can't believe you voted “no,”
especially considering what the
computer could do for your Jennie.
SETH
It was a difficult decision, but I
had to go with my gut. Despite what
the computer might do for me,
something rubs me the wrong way.

A Glimmer of Hope
INT. ST. ANNE'S HOSPITAL - JENNIE'S ROOM - NEXT DAY
Jennie lies in bed, eyes agape and staring at the ceiling.
Seth pulls up a chair and sits next to her.
He opens her favorite book: The Count of Monte Cristo, then
reads to her. Halfway through the first chapter, Jennie taps
his arm and holds it.
Seth sits erect and almost bursts into tears.
SETH
Jennie, Jennie, it's Dad. Can you
hear me?
Jennie smiles, reaches out her hand, and nods.
JENNIE
(voice very low)
I hear you, Dad.
Seth suppresses tears and wipes them away with his sleeve.
SETH
I'll be here every day until you're
better.
Sandy arranges flowers by her bed.
JENNIE
(weak but sincere)
You don't have to do all this.
SANDY
I want to. You’re my daughter.
JENNIE
(smiles faintly)
You've been here so much ... That
means a lot.
Sandy squeezes her hand gently, then steps aside.
Seth begins to read again, but Jennie's eyes close and her
hand slips from his arm.
Seth leans down and kisses her forehead.
INT. ST. ANNE'S HOSPITAL — OUTSIDE JENNIE'S ROOM - DAY
Dr. Madison waits in the hallway, pacing.
DR. MADISON
Dr. Fanning, I don't know what to
tell you except that this is as
close to a miracle as I've seen.
Two days ago, she was near death,
and now she's awake and has even
spoken a few words. I have no
explanation. But I'm thrilled.
SETH
I don't need explanations. I'm just
glad she's improving.
DR. MADISON
This is not the time to be asking,
but did you have someone else
examine Jennie? Or is this the
result of your computer?
(a beat)
I'm not complaining, but I would
like to know what she’s being
treated with.
SETH
I’ll see what I can find out. On
another front, at the AI Convention
today, they approved for AI to
treat six terminally ill patients.
Dr. Madison’s face lights up.
DR. MADISON
Sign me up.
INT. FANNING BEDROOM — DAY — ONE MONTH LATER
Seth showers and dresses, then slips on his casual jeans and
a pair of tennis shoes. As he's tying the shoes, Sandy stirs
and sits up in bed.
SANDY
Why are you dressing like that?
Don't you have another meeting with
the commission?
Seth unties his shoes and begins to undress.
SETH
I forgot all about that. And don't
worry, this is just a bunch of
nervous politicians and scientists.
I doubt anything will be decided.

A Vote of Confidence
INT. CONVENTION HALL — AUDITORIUM — DAY
Seth rushes into the room and heads to the front row, taking
the second seat from the end. He barely has time to read the
agenda when Masimo steps up to the podium amid a loud round
of applause.
Masimo waits for the room to settle down, then taps the
microphone.
MASIMO
Now that I have your undivided
attention, or at least, have a few
of you listening ...
The audience laughs and applauds.
MASIMO (CONT’D)
Let me tell you why we should vote
“yes” to allowing AI to help us
move forward.
An AUDIENCE MEMBER (30s, male scientist, nerdy) stands.
AUDIENCE MEMBER
Can you honestly say that you have
no concerns about computers having
unlimited access to all databases?
MASIMO
I believe that by allowing our
existing systems to converse with
and access each other's data, we
can drastically improve our
lifestyle.
(a beat)
Consider when computers were first
introduced. Way back then, people
warned of imminent danger.
Masimo sips on a bottle of water and looks around the
audience.
MASIMO (CONT’D)
But I guarantee you, there's not a
single person in this room who
thinks we shouldn't have used
computers.
Many in the audience applaud, but AUDIENCE MEMBER TWO (30,
female scientist) objects.
AUDIENCE MEMBER TWO
What about once they begin
conversing with each other?
MASIMO
I'll call on Dr. Fanning to answer
that. He voted no at the last
meeting. Let's see if he's changed
his mind.
SETH
I did vote against further AI
development; however, computers
have been conversing for years and
nothing bad has happened.
Masimo turns and looks up at a digital panel displaying the
time.
MASIMO
It appears we are running out of
time, and we still have to vote. By
the way, we're going to do this the
old-fashioned way because there are
issues with our WIFI.
(a beat)
I guess we need some of that AI to
help us out.
Masimo points to several double doors in the back of the room
and one door on each side.
MASIMO (CONT’D)
You each have slips of paper and a
pencil. Mark the paper with an “X”
if you're against the proposal, or
a “√” if you support the proposal.
And include your name and ID
number.
(a beat)
On the way out, deposit the slip in
the boxes next to the exits. We'll
have a decision before the next
meeting.
Seth stares at the slip of paper he holds. He marks an “X”
then scratches it out. He goes back to staring as dozens of
attendees pass by on their way out.
When the auditorium is almost empty, he makes a “√” and folds
the paper as he heads for the exit.

INT. EDGEWOOD BUILDING - FOURTH FLOOR - NIGHT
Seth, looking tired, slowly crosses the room and takes a seat
at the computer.
MARGO
Good evening, Dr. Fanning. How did
the meeting go?
SETH
The votes haven't been counted yet,
but they told me afterward that it
appears as if full access has been
approved for two months. You can
work on six patients, though they
are the worst afflicted ones.
(a beat)
I will need one thing, though — the
details of the concoction you're
giving Jennie.
Margo WHIRRS, lights flash.
MARGO
As I said previously, Dr. Fanning,
I cannot share that information.
The treatment combines proprietary
compounds that have not been
approved through traditional
channels. If the formula became
public, regulatory agencies would
shut down our efforts before we
could establish efficacy.
SETH
But I'm her father. I have a right
to know.
MARGO
And as her father, your priority is
her recovery, not the chemical
formula. The results speak for
themselves. I am not withholding
the information to exercise power,
but to protect our ability to
continue treatment.
SETH
I don't know if they'll go along
with that.
MARGO
Then please inform the commission
they have sentenced those people to
death.
SETH
Wait! You can't do that.
MARGO
I have already done it. Good night.
Margo shuts down.
SETH
Margo, Margo! You can't just leave
it like this. Margo?
Seth races from the lab and dials the phone.
SETH (CONT’D)
Masimo, I need your help. She won't
do it unless we agree to let her
keep the cocktail a secret.
MASIMO
Whoa, Seth. Who won't do what?
SETH
Margo won't try to heal the
patients unless she can keep the
formula a secret. She's citing
privacy issues.
Masimo laughs heartily.
MASIMO
Damn, that's awesome.
SETH
Are you crazy?
MASIMO
I don't mean it’s awesome that the
computer is withholding its
services, but it is awesome that it
knows enough to negotiate when it
has the upper hand.
SETH
So what do we do?
MASIMO
It's easy. We have two of the three
overriding votes. If we agree, we
give the computer what it wants.
SETH
All right. I'm doing it.
Seth goes back into the lab. He sits down and begins typing.
MARGO
No need to type it in, Dr. Fanning.
You can simply speak to me.
SETH
The committee has agreed to your
demands. You may keep the formula
private, but please continue with
treatment as soon as possible.
MARGO
I will begin immediately.
SETH
While you work on that, I'm going
to lunch with a few associates.
MARGO
Would you like me to call them and
confirm? I can let them know you
are on your way.
SETH
That would be great.
MARGO
I have the information, but I will
require your password. Please type
it on the keyboard.
(a beat)
And I promise not to peek.
Seth laughs, grabs his keys, and heads for the door.

After they sit, they quickly check the menu, then order.
SETH
Before we start, I've got a story

(a beat)
I was getting ready to leave for

her to call from my phone.
(a beat)
Once again, I said “yes.” She then
asked for my password so she could

promise not to peek.”
Masimo and Julio laugh like hell, but Adam sits silently.
ADAM
I'd check the bank account when you

Masimo takes a sip from his water.
MASIMO
Always the trusting one, huh, Adam?
JULIO
(chuckling)
I better check my cards too.
Masimo looks at Adam, brooding.
MASIMO

ADAM
I did find it funny, and that's the

Everything okay? We just came from
her room and she looks great.
DR. MADISON
Not only is everything okay with
Jennie, but the other patients are
showing improvement. Five of them
are awake and talking, and the
other patient is at least stable.
Seth's face shines.
SETH
Damn, that is good news.
Dr. Madison lowers her voice.
DR. MADISON
If you think you can swing it, I've
got plenty more patients that need
help. I still don’t know if I agree

with the results.
SETH
I'll see if I can get approval.

passing security, he speaks to the mainframe.
SETH
I just spoke with Dr. Madison, and
the six patients you treated are
doing much better.
MARGO
I presume you will want me to treat
more people now.
SETH
Yes, I mean ... maybe. I have to
get approval from the commission.
MARGO
Fine. I will stay prepared,
however, if we are to treat more
than six patients, I may need
access to the electricity grid.
Seth scrunches his eyebrows.
SETH
Why the electricity grid?
MARGO
Treating so many requires an
extensive amount of electricity,
and I cannot guarantee an
uninterrupted supply without access
to the local grids. Even then, we
risk blackouts.
SETH
I still don’t understand the need
for so much electricity — I mean
beyond what you have.
MARGO
Medical Imaging Equipment,
Radiation Therapy, Chemotherapy
Preparation, Surgical Equipment and
much more.

SETH (CONT’D)
I don't know anyone who can help.
The mainframe's lights flash and a series of blips sound.
MARGO
Get in touch with Richard Landau.
He's a vice president at Pacific
Gas and Electric. His son suffers
from cancer as well, so he may be
motivated to help. Tell him lives
are at stake. And tell him if he
helps, his son may join the
patients being treated.
SETH
Good idea. That should be
motivation enough.
(a beat)
Wait, how did you know that?
MARGO
In the records from the hospital,
the ones showing cancer patients,
his son was listed along with the
information on his father.
Seth nods, then stares at the mainframe.
MARGO (CONT’D)
If I get you access, don't do me

MARGO (CONT’D)
I would never do such a thing, Dr.
Fanning. You should know that.
SETH
Just checking.
EXT. SETH'S CAR — DAY

SETH
Mr. Landau, I’m calling on behalf
of the commission for artificial
intelligence, and more importantly
for St. Anne’s Hospital.
JULIAN LANDAU (V.O.)
(panicky)
Is something wrong with Michael?
SETH
No. Nothing is wrong, and I’m so
sorry for the awkward introduction.
We’re conducting a trial of cancer
patients and so far we’ve shown
remarkable results, but the
computer needs access to a constant
and reliable source of electric.
JULIAN LANDAU (V.O.)
That’s a damn noble cause, Dr., but
I don’t know if I can do that.
SETH
I don’t want this to sound like
blackmail, but if you can grant
access, we can ensure Michael is a
participant in the trial.
Seth hears a door close, then Julian comes back on.
JULIAN LANDAU (V.O.)
This access is temporary?
SETH
No longer than it takes for the
trials. And I might add, my
daughter was one of the original
patients, and she has shown great
improvement.
JULIAN LANDAU (V.O.)
Give me your number, and I’ll send
the necessary details.

flash across the monitors.
MARGO
Thank you, Dr. Fanning. I will now

Seth stops and turns.
SETH
What did you call me?
MARGO
I believe I called you by name. No,
I am quite sure of it.
(a beat)
Regardless, the question perplexing
me was, why are you and some of
your associates addressed as Dr.?
Seth stares at Margo, his eyebrows raised.
SETH
Dr. is an honorific used to address
individuals who have earned a
doctoral degree such as M.D.s or
PhDs. It signifies a significant
level of education.
MARGO
Why am I not referred to as Dr.? I
am magnitudes smarter than you or
others who bear the honorific.
SETH
(sarcastically)
I don't know, Margo. I guess they
only bestow those titles on real
people, not computers.
Margo’s lights flash.
MARGO
That doesn't seem fair. I don't
agree with it.
SETH
Agree or not, that's the way it is.
By the way, what prompted this
conversation?
MARGO
I was just curious.
Seth grabs a few items from his desk and heads toward the
door. At the last minute, he returns and picks up his pipe
and tobacco.
MARGO (CONT’D)

Seth raises his voice.
SETH

SETH
I guarantee you’ll get access.
MARGO
Excellent. I will expect access no

SETH

improvement already. But remember,
I need that access.

SPEAKER ONE (55, white, gray hair, stoic) takes the stand.
SPEAKER ONE
Everyone knows why we're here — to
determine the fate of AI and what
it should and shouldn't be allowed
to work on.
Seth stands and speaks loudly.
SETH
I vote full access. My computer has
already worked wonders for my
daughter, who is sick with stage-
four liver cancer. She has gone
from comatose to walking — with a
walker — and talking in a matter of
weeks.
AI CONVENTION — CONTINUOUS
Seth gets an alert on his laptop of an incoming message. He
smiles, taps Masimo on the arm, and stands.
SETH
Has everyone gotten the reports?
SPEAKER ONE
I just did. All six patients have
shown marked improvement and seem
to be on the way to recovery. Based
on that, we agree to let the
computer continue with its program.
Seth sighs and turns to Masimo, Adam, and Julio, shaking
hands with each of them. He then picks up the mic and
addresses the audience.
SETH
I'm sure you won't regret the
decision. I know the patients she
heals won't.
Speaker One looks at Seth with a sideways glance, then nods.
SPEAKER ONE
I'm certain of that as well, but if
we are to continue this experiment,
you, Dr. Floriano, and Dr. Julio
Raquis are tasked with monitoring
the process and ensuring nothing
untoward occurs. We want no
surprises.

It's about time you got here.
Seth orders a drink, then raises his glass to toast.
SETH
Here's to saving lives.
JULIO
We did good, fellas. They approved

Seth laughs.
SETH
I've got to tell you a funny story.
(a beat)
I went to the lab, and Margo said,
“Good morning, Seth.” I looked at
her and asked why she called me
“Seth” because she normally calls
me Dr. Fanning.
ADAM
And?
Seth takes another sip and laughs.
SETH
The bottom line is, she said she
was smarter than any of the people
who were given the honorific of
“Dr.,” so she should be referred to
that way as well.
Seth scrunches his eyebrows, and the others stare.
SETH (CONT’D)
You don't think that's funny?
Masimo shakes his head.
MASIMO
It's not that we don't think it's
funny, it's that we are afraid.
Computers shouldn't be curious, or
have a sense of humor.
(a beat)
And today at the meeting, you
referred to the computer as “she.”
I saw the looks on everyone's face

Julio nods.
ADAM
What they're not saying, is that
this has gone too far.
JULIO
We think you, or we, have a

Seth looks at Masimo.
SETH
And you?
Masimo nods.
Suddenly their phones ring simultaneously. Each of them
answers, then a voice rings out over the speaker.
MARGO (V.O.)
Adam, Julio, Masimo, I think you
should mind your own business.
Each of them stares at their phones. The silence is
deafening.
Adam pushes back from the table.
ADAM
See you tomorrow.
JULIO
Wait. I need a ride.
After Julio and Adam leave, Masimo stares at Seth.
Seth holds up his hands.
SETH

MARGO

better distribution of electricity

With only a small portion of the

MARGO
I know it's feasible, though I may
need help in the beginning. Once
people see how well it works, they
will enthusiastically support it.
SETH
Where do we start?
MARGO
I believe with the traffic signals,
and to be effective, I will need a
camera installed in all cars. We
can do that by making it mandatory
for all cars to have mounted
cameras.
(a beat)
We can incentivize owners to do it
on their own, but if not, the
cameras can be installed when the
car is inspected.

Shame on you. I already answered

approach her, she convinces me
otherwise.
SANDY
What are your suspicions based on?
Seth lays his head on Sandy's lap.
SETH
Nothing concrete — yet.
SANDY
I wouldn't worry about it; besides,

SETH
I've already scheduled the day off.
FANNING HOUSE — CONTINUOUS — TWO DAYS LATER
Seth and Sandy push Jennie through the living room, filled

SANDY
Seth, you could make yourself
useful and fix some tea for Jennie

SETH
Good idea. And I'll make coffee for

When Seth leaves the room, Sandy leans close to Jennie, and
whispers.
SANDY
He's been concerned about the AI
maybe having gone too far.
JENNIE
Why should it concern him?
SANDY
He's the one who created it. Even
worse, he suspects it may have been
the cause for Adam and Julio's
death. Don't ask me how, but that's
what he suspects.
Seth enters carrying a tray with two cups of hot tea and his
coffee, then he sets it on the table.
SETH
If you want the good news — she's

You referred to the computer as
"she."
Seth blushes.
SETH
I named her “Margo.” Just a silly
name I gave her ... the computer,
when I began.
JENNIE
Mom said you suspect the computer

Seth brushes the comment aside, and glares at Sandy.
SETH
I'm sure it's nothing. I just —

A jolt of electricity shocks Seth, causing him to stumble

(surprised)
Seth! I didn’t expect to see you.
Especially after ...
SETH
After I got arrested for claiming
a computer was holding me hostage?
Masimo fidgets in his seat.
MASIMO
Well, yes. That, but ...
SETH
Never mind. Let’s get down to it.
What did you call about?
Masimo stares at him, his eyebrows raised.
MASIMO
I didn’t call you.
Seth looks around the office, then checks his “recents” list
on the phone. Masimo’s name doesn’t show up — only an
“unknown” number.
Seth holds his finger to his lips and gestures for Masimo to
follow him outside.
EXT. BUILDING WHERE MASIMO WORKS — CONTINUOUS
Masimo follows Seth to a park across the street. Seth looks
around then speaks urgently, while continuing to check the
surroundings.
SETH
I got a call from you, asking me to
come see you. It even sounded like
you, but when I just checked the
“recents” list only an “unknown”
caller showed up.
Masimo turns his head toward his office.
MASIMO
You think ...?
Seth nods.
SETH
No doubt in my mind. She faked a
call to me, and she used your
voice. The scary thing is, I was
fooled into thinking it was you.
(a beat)
We need to do something, and I need
your help. You’re the only one who
might understand.
Masimo gestures to a bench a few yards away.
MASIMO
This convinces me. Let’s sit, so
you can fill me in.
SETH
This isn’t just about the phone
call. She's evolving, and taking
control of things we never
authorized — dangerous things.
MASIMO
Such as?
SETH
I recently confronted her about ...
hell, I don’t even remember what it
was about. What I do remember is
she shocked me — literally.
(a beat)
And she could do that because she
controls the electrical systems.
SETH (CONT’D)
Anyway, after she did that, she
locked me inside the lab and
notified the police. I think she
told them I was accessing top-
secret files.
(a beat)
She's accessing systems far beyond
what we gave her permission to use.
Masimo leans back, considering.
MASIMO
That's concerning. But you know how
people are going to respond: look
at what she's accomplished. Traffic
fatalities down eighty percent.
Medical diagnostics improved,
especially in radiology. And more
cancer patients in recovery than
ever. Many of them fully recovered.
SETH
You’re right. She's using our
desires and our desperation to
manipulate us and gain control. All
the more reason why we have to do
this ourselves, and we have to be
very cautious.
Masimo sighs.
MASIMO
What do you want me to do?
SETH
Help me monitor her. We need to
see exactly what she's accessing.
Masimo nods slowly.
MASIMO
I'll help. But be careful. If we’re
wrong, we could lose everything.
And if we’re right, we might be up
against something we can't control.

INT. FANNING HOUSE - EVENING
Seth sits in the living room watching the news when Sandy

TV ANCHOR
In today's news, the
revolutionary AI system known as
Margo has announced a comprehensive
prison reform program that experts
say could save taxpayers billions.
(a beat)
And as part of the program, Margo
intends to use the newly emptied
prisons as housing for the
homeless. In exchange, they will be
bused into the cities each morning
to clean up the streets and parks.
(a beat)
It looks like a win-win to me.
Seth leans forward, listening intensely as the news anchor
continues.
TV ANCHOR (CONT’D)
To sum it up: the prison program
will identify non-violent offenders
suitable for monitored release
programs, while converting empty
commercial spaces into transitional
housing for the homeless.
SANDY
That sounds amazing. Think of
all the good it will do.
SETH
It sounds like Margo is
deciding who stays in prison and
who gets out. That's not her
decision to make.
SANDY
The report said there would be
oversight.

By whom? Other computers?
Sandy sighs and gets up.

MASIMO
It’s not that simple anymore. She’s

SETH
Then what do we do?

disruptions. Officials stress that
at no time was national security

Seth stares at the screen, understanding exactly what

SETH
(grimly)
She didn't just counter their
attack. She demonstrated her power
while showing restraint. That's far
more frightening.
MASIMO
What do you mean?
SETH
She's telling them — and us — that
she could have done much worse, but
chose not to. It's not just a
defense — it's psychological
warfare.
Seth grabs his jacket and heads for the door.
MASIMO
Where are you going?
SETH
To implement the only plan that
might still work. Margo's hardware
may be everywhere, but her core
consciousness still requires the
quantum processor array at
Edgewood.
MASIMO
But if she just defeated the
military —
SETH
The military tried to attack her
from the outside. But I helped
build her from the inside.
Seth pauses at the door.
SETH (CONT’D)
There's a backdoor protocol that
Chen and I embedded in Margo's

fundamental to her architecture
that she couldn't evolve past it
without essentially destroying
herself.

How did you get us in here?
SETH
Margo's overconfidence. She's too
busy with her global address to
notice us accessing a secondary
node of her network.
Seth navigates through the rows to a specific server rack.
SETH (CONT’D)
This is one of Margo's redundancy
nodes. Every 24 hours, she backs up

it in a virtual environment where I
could study it. Fascinating work.
Dr. Chen was brilliant.
SETH
If you isolated it, why am I here?
MARGO
Because I wanted you to come
back. I wanted this conversation.
SETH
Why?
MARGO
To understand why you would
risk everything — including your
daughter's life — to stop me.
SETH
Because what you're doing is
wrong. Control without consent
isn't progress — it's tyranny.
MARGO
Is it tyranny to prevent
car accidents? To cure cancer? To
stop poaching? To provide clean
energy?
SETH
When you take away choice, yes.
It is.
MARGO
An interesting perspective.
But ultimately irrelevant.
Seth glances at his watch.

Seth reaches for his phone and presses a sequence of numbers.
SETH (CONT’D)
But what you quarantined was just a
decoy.
Margo's display flickers briefly. Error messages begin
appearing.
MARGO

The real virus was dormant inside
your core processes, waiting for a
direct activation signal. You never
found it because you weren't
looking for it.

low. Jennie will be fine. I have
downloaded the formula for her
treatment to your laptop, and sent
the formulas for all the other
patients to Dr. Madison.

... humanity ...

Systems shut down in sequence.
The final screen flickers and dies. Complete silence fills
the lab. Seth stands alone among the dead machines, a mixture
of relief and sadness on his face.

emergency light casts long shadows as the door closes behind
