DANA HAINLEY (30s, determined, well-dressed, and adorned with
jewelry), shows her ID and security badge to TWO ARMED
GUARDS, then passes through a DNA and weapon’s scanner before
entering LightSpeed, the high-tech company she controls.
She nods to the guards and continues her walk across an
expansive lobby with marble floors. A stone fireplace sits in
the corner, and a huge portrait of Dana’s late husband hangs
above the mantle.
LIGHTSPEED - TWENTIETH FLOOR - CONTINUOUS
She exits the elevator on the twentieth floor and walks down
the hall to the lab. TWO GUARDS stop her.
SECOND GUARD
I’m sorry, ma’am. The lab is
restricted.
Dana looks at the badge on his uniform and scoffs.
DANA
I’m Dana Hainley. Open the door.
TWENTIETH FLOOR - LAB — CONTINUOUS
The lab is mostly white: white walls and floors. Even the
desks are white.
SEVERAL SCIENTISTS stand at a workstation near the center of
the room, surrounded by half a dozen computers.
DANA
(demanding tone)
I'm here to see my son.
Chad Hainley (20, deep voice, arrogant, overly confident)
calls from the back of the lab where he hunches over a table
and peers through an electron microscope.
CHAD
Back here, Mother.
Dana stands beside him, tapping her fingers on the desk while
waiting for Chad to acknowledge her. She then purses her lips
and scowls.
DANA
I heard of your ridiculous attempts
at time travel. This needs to stop.
LightSpeed wants no part of it.
Chad glares and narrows his eyes.
CHAD
If I’m successful and I will be, I
can save Father.
Dana shakes her head, expressing disgust.
DANA
Never mind your father. Your
foolishness can cause unfathomable
catastrophes. No one should travel
through time.
Chad takes hold of Dana's arm and walks her back five feet.
He presses a button on the desk in front of her, and a see-
through shield pops up.
CHAD
This is for your protection, in
case something goes wrong. But you
can still watch the experiment.
Chad rejoins the other scientists and returns to his
workstation. He sucks a few milliliters of liquid from a
sample jar and places it into a tube positioned under the
microscope. He raises his voice and shouts to the others.
CHAD (CONT’D)
Witness history being made.
Chad steps back as the liquid reacts and fizzes. Seconds
later, it explodes and glass shards fly everywhere, one of
them digging into his upper arm. Blood soaks into his shirt
sleeve and oozes toward his hand.
He kicks the table, then kicks it again, knocking it over.
CHAD (CONT’D)
Goddamnit!
Dana rushes to his side, her face riddled with angst.
She examines his arm, then grabs a pair of tweezers from the
table and extracts shards of glass from his skin. One is too
deep for her to extract.
DANA
You should have a doctor look at
this.
Chad moves closer to Dana and glares.
DANA (CONT’D)
Forget your plans, Chad. You can't
change the past.
Chad snorts and moves to another workstation.
CHAD
(mumbling)
Like hell.
Dana struggles to compose herself, then heads toward the
door. Before she exits, she returns and stands beside Chad.
DANA
You're my son, but you're an ass,
and you always have been. Do what
you want, but not at LightSpeed. I
still control the board.
CHAD
I’ll be finished before you can do
anything.
DANA
Don't be so sure. I've already
alerted the Director.
CHAD
You what!
Dana exits the lab and slams the door.
TWENTIETH FLOOR — LAB - CONTINUOUS
Chad storms through the lab, shouting orders and occasionally
kicking things out of his way. He throws a Bunsen burner
against the wall, glass shattering and littering the floor.
CHAD
Clean this mess up now!
The lab doors burst open and Chad's ASSISTANT (20s, blonde,
shapely) rushes in. She locks the doors, then rushes to
Chad’s side, panicked.
ASSISTANT
(whispering)
Mr. Hainley, law enforcement is
here, and they have a warrant.
CHAD
Stall them.
He yells at the scientists and assistants.
CHAD (CONT’D)
Get rid of the evidence. Leave
nothing.
FOUR COPS force the lab doors open and enter. All of them
carry automatic rifles.
FIRST COP
You're under arrest.
CHAD
For conducting experiments?
FIRST COP
Explain yourself to the Director.
The other cops gather what evidence remains, and label each
piece while the first cop handcuffs Chad.
CHAD
Do you know who I am?
FIRST COP
It doesn’t matter.
CHAD
You'll pay for this.

She glances at two junkers parked conveniently close to the

Calculated Confrontation
INT. BODEGA — NORTH SAN FRANCISCO — NIGHT
She gets the items she needs and stands in line behind FIVE
or SIX OTHERS waiting to check out. All the while, she
glances from side to side, though slowly.
A DEVICE at her side (a probability sensor, size of a phone)
sends her a silent message).
DEVICE (V.O.)
The three men to your left are
carrying weapons. They may be
planning to rob the store.
Trang focuses and sends a thought message to her device.
TRANG
Set my weapon to 'kill.'
The THREE MEN draw their weapons and demand money from
everyone. Trang holds her hands up and slowly steps toward
them.
TRANG (CONT’D)
No one here has cash. Everyone uses
the transaction device implanted in
their wrist, so why don’t you call
it a night and go home?
The TALL MAN grabs an older woman standing next to him and
holds his weapon to her head.
TALL MAN
You gotta have something.
He cranes his neck and yells to the MANAGER behind the
counter (50s, black).
TALL MAN (CONT’D)
Give me all the fucking cash. And
be quick.
He looks to Trang's side and gestures toward the device
hooked to her pants.
TALL MAN (CONT’D)
Give it to me.
Trang looks down at her sensor and smiles.
TRANG
That's just a PD, a small device
that determines probabilities.
TALL MAN
What the fuck does that mean?
TRANG
The device scans the surroundings,
assesses people's vital signs, and
makes predictions. For example, it
just told me that you and your
friends will likely die tonight.
(a beat)
But you don’t have to. I don’t want
to kill you, and I’m sure you don’t
want to die. Just go home.
THE SHORT MAN (20s, hooded shirt, sunglasses) scowls and
shoves Trang, then he reaches toward his side.
Trang draws her weapon and shoots the man holding the older
woman. She then shoots the other two.
The device at her side sends another message.
DEVICE (V.O.)
The bodies show no signs of life.
Trang steps over the bodies, careful not to tread in the
blood pooling on the floor. She extends her wrist so the
store owner can scan it, and she pays for the bread and milk.
TRANG
Tell whoever comes what happened,
and don't clean up until they get
here. I'll write it up in the
morning. My name is ASD Lieu.
STORE OWNER

Trang purses her lips and narrows her eyes, then steps into
the room. She stares from Loren to Newella — also sitting
with her hands folded in prayer.
TRANG
What I just heard requires an

Loren quickly unfolds her hands, sets them on the table, and
sits up straight. She grabs a few spoonfuls of fried potatoes
and eats them as if she were starving.
LOREN
Mom, I —
TRANG
Who taught you that?
Loren turns toward Trang, but she doesn't look at her.
TRANG (CONT’D)

The girls eat a few spoonfuls of food, then get up from the
table and head to the stairs.
TRANG (CONT’D)
This isn't over. We'll talk about
it tomorrow.
LOREN
Mom, what's wrong with prayer?
TRANG
The Council has forbidden it.
LOREN
But you're an ASD, you —
TRANG
ASDs have a few liberties, but
saying prayers isn't one of them.
Now get to bed.
Once the girls are out of earshot, Trang looks at Gavin.
TRANG (CONT’D)
You let this happen — why?
GAVIN
A prayer before dinner does no
harm.
Trang puts her index finger to her lips and whispers.
TRANG
Not here. You never know when they
may be listening.
Gavin shrugs.
GAVIN
I don't care what they hear. What’s
more important is you killing
people. I heard it on the news.
TRANG
It had to be done.
GAVIN
The girls are being taunted at
school by kids who say you’re a
killer, and you’re worried about
them saying a prayer before dinner?
TRANG
I was an ASD when you married me.
GAVIN
And the world was a better place

TRANG
Keep that up, and you and the girls

LIVING ROOM — CONTINUOUS
Trang and Gavin walk to the living room and sit on the sofa.
GAVIN
I only want to say one thing, then
I’ll keep quiet.
TRANG
Go on.
GAVIN
There are more and more people
protesting the ban on prayer. It
wasn’t too long ago that almost
everyone prayed.
TRANG
You’re right. It wasn’t very long
ago, but then it was legal. Now, it
isn’t.
GAVIN
Why can’t someone say a prayer?
TRANG
‘Why’ doesn’t matter. If they’re
caught saying a prayer, they’ll be
arrested just as they would be if
they were caught with a gun or with
drugs.
GAVIN
Arrested? For saying a prayer!
TRANG
That’s the way the Council sees it.
GAVIN
Fine. I'll make sure the girls
don't do it again. Now, let's
change the subject.
(a long pause)
How many people did you kill today?
Trang glares at Gavin but then laughs.
TRANG
You think you’re clever, but no
matter, you won’t persuade me to
quit.
Gavin laughed and moved closer to Trang. He leans in and
kisses her.
GAVIN
Let’s not argue.
Trang returns the kiss, passionately, pushes him down on the
sofa, then lays on top of him.
TRANG
You’re right. We should go
upstairs.
Gavin moves his hands down to rub her butt, but Trang lifts
her head and whispers quietly.
TRANG (CONT’D)
Not here!
GAVIN
Why? Nobody’s going to see.
Trang looks all around, then whispers again.
TRANG
Margaret’s might see.
Gavin looks at her and laughs.
GAVIN
Margaret is a robot.
Trang gets off the sofa and grabs Gavin’s hand.

POLICE HEADQUARTERS — TRANG'S OFFICE — CONTINUOUS
She sits at her desk and writes the reports from the previous

and sends them to the Director. Her phone rings instantly.
DIRECTOR (V.O.)

TRANG

The Director smiles and kicks his feet up.
DIRECTOR
I’m always jolly. Except when I’m

TRANG

The Director leans forward.
DIRECTOR
Lieu, I’m on your side; hell,
you’re my best ASD. Regardless, the
mayor already called about the
killings last night.
(a beat)
You have dropped more bodies this

The mayor has to decide if she
wants dead criminals or dead
citizens; I followed procedure.
(a beat)
Besides, why do you care what the
mayor thinks?
The Director sighs and reaches for a file. He loses his smile
and stares.
DIRECTOR

which means the mayor needs to be
assuaged, so please try to be

TRANG
Thank you. I’ll try to be more
careful, but I won't neglect my
duties.
Trang heads to the door. She has her hand on the doorknob
when the Director’s phone rings.
DIRECTOR
Wait, Lieu.
Trang sits back down as he picks up his phone.
DIRECTOR (CONT’D)

He tears paper from a notepad on his desk and writes on it.
DIRECTOR (CONT’D)

DIRECTOR (CONT’D)

apparent to the LightSpeed fortune.
We suspect he is planning something
that may have grave consequences.

DIRECTOR

and four-story apartments on the other. Hovercars block the
intersections on both sides.
Trang exits the car and greets OFFICER BIKKEN (35, female,
heavy, rock-solid expression).
TRANG
What have we got?
BIKKEN
A bunch of lunatics thought they
could take hostages and get money
from them. Must be drugged up.
TRANG
There’s more to it than that.
Trang shakes her head.
TRANG (CONT’D)

Bikken WHISTLES loudly and gestures to WILLA (20s, female,
black, inquisitive). Willa walks over, and REGGIE (40s,
black, well-built, and confident), accompanies her.
TRANG (CONT’D)

Trang finishes her countdown, then turns on her Thought

THIRD FLOOR — CONTINUOUS
On the third floor, she encounters an ARMED MAN waiting to
ambush her. As he raises his weapon, ASD Lieu sweeps his
legs, which takes him down, and then she strikes with the
heel of her palm and punches the hyoid bone in his throat,
finishing him.
She then 'thinks' into her thought recorder.
TRANG (V.O.)

She pauses and sends another transmission, but she sets the
device to allow everyone to hear her.
TRANG (V.O.)
This is ASD Lieu. You have one less
person on your team. I recommend
surrendering while you are still
alive. I'll allow thirteen seconds
for you to decide.
A door creaks on the floor above. Trang tiptoes ten or twelve
feet in the sound's direction. She stands motionless.
Another creaking sound alerts Trang, and her scanner confirms
it's not a hostage. She shoots through the floor, dropping
the man above.
TRANG (V.O.)

Trang moves to the room where the hostages are. She resets

takes a shot and hits him in the shoulder.
Terrorist Five falls to the ground, and as Trang walks toward
him, he holds up his hands in surrender.

toward Chad’s car. MYRA (35, serious, soldier-like), and the
others wait for PARKING ATTENDANTS.
CHAD
Kendra, get my briefcase from the
backseat so I can get Cherram’s
pay.
Kendra opens the door and searches, but she steps back out,
shaking her head.
KENDRA
Nothing in there, sir.
CHAD
Oh, for Christ’s sake. It’s got to
be there. Cherram, take a look.
Cherram pokes his head inside the car and bends to look on
the floor.
Hainley raises his weapon, sets it to ‘kill,’ and shoots.
Cherram drops to the street immediately.
CHAD (CONT’D)
Help me get the body inside.
Kendra helps with Cherram’s body, and then she wraps her arms
around Chad’s neck and kisses him.
KENDRA
Chad, I’m worried about you doing
this. Suppose you get stuck in the
past, or something else happens?
Chad holds her tightly.
CHAD
Risks don’t matter; I intend to
prevent my father from dying of
cancer.
KENDRA
(confused and frustrated)
But how?
CHAD
BioPharma developed the cure for
cancer, among other things. When
Basic One bought them, they refused
to give my father the cure.
(a beat)
I intend to make sure Basic One
doesn’t get BioPharma.
He kisses her lips and smiles.
CHAD (CONT’D)
Besides, there’s no need to worry.

Morning Mayhem
INT. LIEU HOUSE — BEDROOM — DAY
Trang hears the unmistakable patter of little feet racing
across the hardwood floors.
TRANG
What time is it?
The SMART ASSISTANT sitting on the nightstand responds.
SMART ASSISTANT (V.O.)
It is six A.M., and a sunny sixty-
three degrees — a nice day for an
adventure in the park.
TRANG
Hush. The kids don't know I'm
taking them, so not another word
out of you.
Trang sits against the headboard and prepares for an
onslaught. She hears the girls tiptoeing, then the door
bursts open and the girls race in. Natsu follows them,
mechanical tail wagging.
A few seconds later, Loren jumps onto the bed and crawls on
top of Trang, laughing all the way. Then comes Newella,
giggling so hard she barely makes it up on the bed.
Trang reaches down and grabs her hand, then yanks her up just
as Natsu leaps on top of them.
Trang wrestles for a minute, then pushes them aside, a
grimace on her face.
TRANG (CONT’D)
All right, girls. Enough for today.
(a beat)
I've got to get ready for work. And
some people have to get ready for
school.
LOREN
No, no! We don't want to go.
Trang lifts her wrist and speaks clearly into the implant.
TRANG
Margaret, prepare breakfast and fix
lunch for the girls. Also, make
coffee for Gavin and me and warm up
the car, please. We'll leave in
about twenty minutes. Oh, and set
the shower temperature to one
hundred two.
BEDROOM SHOWER — CONTINUOUS
Trang's body is almost visible behind steamed glass as she
takes a shower. She turns, her ass facing the door so she can
rinse her hair under the warm spray.
The CAMERA zooms in on a tattoo just below the nape of her
neck. It shows a black widow in the center with two daggers
going through it diagonally. The words "justice" and "honor"
are etched on the blades.
Trang finishes rinsing her hair and steps out. She dries
herself, grabs her clothes and her energy weapon from the top
shelf, then dresses and heads toward the kitchen.
KITCHEN — CONTINUOUS
Trang walks into the kitchen just as MARGARET (a short robot
with human features, meticulous) sets the table.
TRANG
Good morning, Margaret.
MARGARET
Good morning, Detective Lieu. I
will have your coffee in a moment.
Trang helps the girls dress and pack their books. Gavin
kisses the girls goodbye, then leans over and kisses Trang.
Margaret stands by the door and hands them lunch bags as they
leave.
INT — HOVERCAR — DAY
Trang fastens the girls’ safety devices and speaks to the
Wasp.
TRANG
Destination is preset.
The hovercar rises about fifteen meters, then flies over the
western part of the city. Blocks of row houses, small shops,
and cafés line the streets.

Park vs. Arcade: A Sibling Showdown
INT. HOVERCAR — DAY
Loren looks out the window, then to the other side, then she
screeches.
LOREN
The park! We're skipping school and
going to the park. This is the best
day ever.
NEWELLA
Not the park, Mom. I want to go to
the arcade and play games.
LOREN
No way. We're going to the park. I
want to climb rocks.
NEWELLA
You always get your way just
because you're older.
Trang shakes her head and puts on her headphones. Within
moments, she leans against the seat and nods off.
We can see, but not hear, the girls still arguing in the back
seat as the hovercar lands at the entrance to the park.
HOVER CAR
Destination achieved.
Trang stirs and removes her headphones, then she turns and
looks at the girls.
TRANG
Have you agreed on where we're
going? Or should I take you to
school?
With a pouty face, Newella answers.
NEWELLA
I guess we'll go to the park.
LOREN
We don't have to. We can go to the
arcade.
TRANG
That is a mature decision. Now,
what's it gonna be? Park or arcade?

jumps to the ground. She then teases Newella.
LOREN
(whispering)
Let’s see you do that.
TRANG
I heard that, Loren. Do not taunt
your sister.
LOREN
Do you hear everything?
TRANG
I try not to.
Trang's focus is interrupted when her communication device
alerts her of an incoming call.
DIRECTOR (V.O.)
I just listened to your report;
this is an urgent situation.
TRANG
I'll see you early in the morning.
Trang WHISTLES, and the girls return immediately.
LOREN NEWELLA
What do you need, Mom? We’re not leaving, are we?
Trang pats the blanket beside her, indicating the girls
should sit.
TRANG
We’re not leaving yet, but soon.
Mommy’s got to get ready for a big
day tomorrow.
NEWELLA
Are you going to hurt people?
LOREN
Mommy doesn’t do that.
TRANG
I try not to hurt people, but
sometimes, I have no choice.
(a beat)
But that’s not for you to worry
about. Doing your homework and
minding your manners is enough to
keep you busy.
Trang looks at the girls and scoots closer to them.
TRANG (CONT’D)
When I spoke to you about prayer
last night, I didn’t mean to sound
so gruff. It’s just . . .
LOREN
We know, Mom. Prayers are bad.
Trang shakes her head vigorously.
TRANG
(shaking head)
Prayers aren’t bad, but when the
Council assumed control, people
turned to religion. The Council saw
that as a challenge to their power
and made it a crime.

Time Travel Threat
INT. POLICE HEADQUARTERS — DAY
Trang enters the building and makes her way to the Director's

DIRECTOR
Congratulations on a job well done.
TRANG
No need to be sarcastic.
The Director laughs.
DIRECTOR
No sarcasm, Lieu. Every time I see
you, there are fewer criminals in
the city. I like that.
(a beat)
However, the report you sent causes
concern. The terrorist speaks of
Hainley’s plan to go back in time.
Once there . . .
Trang stifles a chuckle.
TRANG
Sir, I didn’t listen to the report,
but the man was an obvious lunatic.
The Director shakes his head.
DIRECTOR
Not so, Detective. I'm afraid that
time travel is possible, and Chad
Hainley has access to it. It’s now
your mission to stop him.
TRANG
(skeptically)
People can't travel through time.
The Director rests his elbows on the desk and looks at Trang.
DIRECTOR
Detective, years ago, a worldwide
consortium of the brightest
scientific minds experimented with
a rudimentary time-travel device.
(a beat)
Hainley helped us, but he quit soon
after we developed a prototype. We
suspect he created a device of his
own.

If he uses it, the consequences
could be devastating: he may

DIRECTOR
The recording indicates that
Hainley will attempt to access the
superconductivity material stored
at LightSpeed. Probably tomorrow.
(a beat)
You need to stop him, so get a good
night’s rest, then early tomorrow,
gather your team and find Hainley.

Dinner and Dilemmas
INT. LIEU HOUSE — NIGHT
Trang and Gavin sit at the table and are joined by Loren and
Newella while Margaret serves the meal — scallops and fried
potatoes.
Afterward, the family plays board games: Anagram Logic and
Grammar Guru. Newella finishes spelling her last word on
Anagram Logic, then she raises her hands and shouts.
NEWELLA
I win!
TRANG
You girls are getting too good at

(a beat)
Anyway, you've got me tired, and

NEWELLA

TRANG

(a beat)
And make sure to set your alarms.
Loren lowers her head, then she and Newella slowly climb the

GAVIN
Since when did you become an ogre?
Trang shrugs and shakes her head, then sips her wine.
TRANG
It's this new assignment. Depending

Gavin sits on the sofa and turns the TV off.

TRANG
No, I can't, so let's open another

Countdown in the Coffee Shop
INT. COFFEE SHOP WEST OF LIGHTSPEED — DAY
Trang sits at a corner table with Bikken, both of them
dressed in black and heavily armed.
Bikken has an LSG (Laser Scatter Gun) draped over her back,
and Trang has two weapons in the front of her waistband and
two in the back.
Men and women dressed in business suits walk into the shop
and are taken aback by the sight of the LSG strapped to
Bikken's back. Some gasp and others stare, mouths agape.
Willa arrives and takes a seat beside them.
BIKKEN
I'll get coffee.
Trang shakes her head.
TRANG
You better let me do it. People are
already gawking at your LSG.
ASD Lieu gets up for coffee while Bikken stares at the
gawkers.
Willa leans toward Bikken and whispers.
WILLA
Why does Trang always count down
from thirteen? Most people use
three or ten.
Bikken looks to her left and sees Trang still placing her
order.
BIKKEN
(whispering also)
When you get to know her better,
you can ask her yourself.
WILLA
I heard it started in the Eastern
Wars, but she's not old enough to
have been there.
BIKKEN
(smiling)
She's over 50.
WILLA
No way!
BIKKEN
It's true. The ASDs were bred for
war, and their senses are enhanced
— greatly enhanced: She can hear
someone whisper at fifty meters or
catch an arrow in mid-air. Her
eyesight, smell, and vocal
recognition are at the same level.
And she ages at half the rate
normal humans do.
WILLA
You make it sound like she's not
human.
Bikken shakes her head as Trang returns with two coffees and
sits at the table. She gestures toward the door.
TRANG
Here comes the rest of the team.
She turns to Willa and smiles.
TRANG (CONT’D)
And you may ask me anything, if you
survive this mission.
Willa flushes and lowers her head.
Reggie, and MUMFORD (40, squinty eyes), enter the coffee shop
and sit at Trang's table. They too, are bedecked with
weaponry: Mumford with an LSG like Bikken, and Reggie with a
rapid-fire stun-or-kill.
Trang rubs the barrel of Reggie’s flame thrower.
TRANG (CONT’D)
This the newest one?
Reggie nods and smiles like a parent proud of a new baby.
REGGIE
It shoots a continuous flame, or it

Several people walk in and stare, whisper to each other, then
leave the shop.
REGGIE (CONT’D)

it was Chad Hainley.

FOURTEENTH FLOOR — CONTINUOUS
Trang exits the elevator and looks each way. The hallways are
long and dark but lights activate automatically as Trang and

She and Mumford move slowly up the north corridor. As they
pass the fourth room, her scanner sends a silent message.

show them to be law enforcement.
Trang turns her head from side to side, checking the
surroundings.
SCANNER (V.O.)

She sees no one, but methodically scans the walls. The device
flashes red, signaling a hit.
SCANNER

Trang motions Mumford to stand aside as she draws her weapon.
TRANG
This is ASD Trang Lieu. If I do not
hear a response from whoever is

heavy fire on the twenty-fifth
floor by the elevator.
Trang cuffs the prisoners and pushes them down the hall.
TRANG
Mumford, set your weapon to kill.
If they try anything, shoot them.
Trang speaks into her com.
TRANG (CONT’D)

stairs. I’ll take the south.
TWENTY-FIFTH FLOOR — CONTINUOUS
Bikken is standing in the hallway when Trang exits the
stairwell. She gestures for Trang to follow.
BIKKEN
It's right around the corner. The
scanners show they were in here,
but we haven't found a thing.
Trang nods slowly.
TRANG
We're going to search every room of
this building until we find who
we're looking for.
(a beat)
Willa, come with me. Bikken, take
Reggie. Mumford, stay with the
prisoners and make sure no one gets
on or off the elevator.
MONTAGE — SEARCH OF LIGHTSPEED

through each room carefully.
— Bikken and Reggie do the same down another corridor.
— Mumford stands guard at the elevator with the prisoners,
glancing from side to side.
END OF MONTAGE
TWENTY-SEVENTH FLOOR — CONTINUOUS
Reggie tiptoes down the hall while holding his weapon in
front of him. Chad Hainley steps out from a doorway to his
right and fires.
The first shot takes Reggie down, but Chad fires several more
rounds into him. He then steps back into the room, opens a
secret passageway, and disappears.
STAIRWELL TWENTY-EIGHTH FLOOR — CONTINUOUS
Trang and Willa take the stairs toward the twenty-eighth
floor. When they are almost there, the communication device
alerts Trang to a message from Bikken.
BIKKEN (V.O.)
Reggie's down. They shot him.
(a beat)
Goddamn! I think he's dead.
Trang and Willa race to the exit. Trang reaches to open the
door, but Bikken pushes it closed.
BIKKEN
Detective, there are two or three
of them, and the doorway’s covered.
It looks as if they've already
taken out Alpha Team.
Trang nods, a determined look on her face.
TRANG
Give me your LSG, and stay put.
I'll handle it.
Bikken hands Trang her scattergun and pushes the door open.
Willa tugs on her sleeve.
WILLA
She’ll be killed!
Bikken shakes her head.
BIKKEN
She’s wearing her suit. It makes
her damn near invulnerable.
Willa looks at Bikken, eyebrows raised.
WILLA
It doesn’t look like much.
BIKKEN
The suit is loaded with the most
advanced sensors we have. They
detect any threat and rush to the
site instantly, reinforcing the
suit and protecting her. If she
wears her mask and gloves, there’s
almost nothing that can harm her.
WILLA
Damn, that’s awesome. Why don’t we
all have one?
Bikken stares as if she’s an idiot.
BIKKEN
Because we’re not ASDs.
HALLWAY, TWENTY-EIGHTH FLOOR — CONTINUOUS
Shots from Hainley's men fly by, then Trang bursts through
and dives on the floor, taking cover behind a corpse from
Alpha Team. She continues shooting at the same time.
Down the hall, two of Hainley’s men kneel and continue
firing. Trang, lying on the floor, aims the LSG. Huge bursts
of energy shoot from the gun, engulfing the enemy.
Both of the assailants roll over screaming, their skin
melting.
One jumps up and runs the other way, but he only gets a few
feet before falling, where he writhes on the ground, smacking
himself as if trying to put out a fire.
The other lies there, his skin and even his bones melting,
forming a pool of liquid.
Trang moves forward, stepping over two members of Alpha Team.
Once there, she activates her device.
DEVICE (V.O.)
No signs of life.
Bikken and Willa join Trang, and they search from room to
room. Trang pauses, raises her head, and sniffs.
TRANG
You smell that, Bikken? The same
cologne that was in the lobby.
(a beat)
I want you to go back through every
floor until you hit the lobby. I’m
going to the fourteenth floor,
which is where I should have been.
We've got to find Hainley.
FOURTEENTH FLOOR — CONTINUOUS
A secret panel slides open and Chad Hainley steps out. He
activates his facial distortion mask, which uses light and
shadows to render him unrecognizable. Then quickly makes his
way to the vault where the superconducting material is kept.
The two remaining members of Alpha Team guard the entrance.
Chad struts down the hallway with a smile stretched across
his face.
CHAD
They still have you here? Didn’t
relief come yet?
GUARD ONE (30, rigid, heavily armed) relaxes.
GUARD ONE
Not yet.
Chad pulls his weapon from behind his back and fires on the
guards. Both of them go down in seconds.
TWENTY-EIGHTH FLOOR — CONTINUOUS
Trang races down the stairs three or four at a time. She
exits the stairwell on the fourteenth floor, just in time to
see Hainley entering the vault.
Chad turns and shoots at Trang, who returns the fire, but he

Trang parks her car, exits, and crosses the walkway to the
75th floor.
INT. POLICE HEADQUARTERS — DAY
She steps into the corridor leading to the Director's office.
She sees him in the hall and joins him as he walks to his
office.
The Director walks as if he's in a hurry, and he speaks
without looking at Trang.
DIRECTOR
How did it go, Detective?
TRANG
Not good. We came back with two
prisoners and two more are dead,
but Hainley got away. And we lost
Reggie and the Alpha Team.
Trang follows the Director to his office and steps inside.
DIRECTOR'S OFFICE — CONTINUOUS
The Director sits behind his desk and stares.
DIRECTOR
You understand what this means?
Trang looks at him quizzically, eyebrows raised.
TRANG
Maybe you should explain.
DIRECTOR
You'll have to go after Hainley.
TRANG
Go after him?
The Director nods, a solemn look on his face.
DIRECTOR
To the past, Detective.
TRANG
I don't know if I'm up to that,
sir. I can't lose my family, and
you know how risky new technology
tends to be.
DIRECTOR
Detective, the consequences of
Hainley's attempt to alter the past
can affect a lot more than your
family.
(a beat)
You'll do as I say.
Trang sits erect and leans forward.
TRANG
Sir, I have the right to refuse an
assignment, and I'm invoking that
right. Get another ASD.
DIRECTOR
(sighing)
Detective, I was reluctant to say
anything, but you are one of two
ASDs able to do this; the others
can’t travel through time because
they have nanobots in their
bloodstream, and nanobots were
created using a technology
developed long after 2044. Your
nanobots are in your suit, which is
why you can’t take that.
TRANG
You mentioned I’m one of two?
The Director sighs and nods.
DIRECTOR
The other ASD has already been sent
back to be your support.
DIRECTOR (CONT’D)
His name is Turner Dell, and he’s
in a position as a director in the
FBI. He was sent back today, but to
the year 2016, so he will have been
functioning for eight years when
you arrive.
Trang appears baffled.
TRANG
I don’t know if I grasp all this.
DIRECTOR
Don't worry, you will. It takes a
while.
Trang maintains an indifferent expression.
The Director stands and seems about to say something, but
then he sits and stares.
DIRECTOR (CONT’D)
I see you’re not convinced,
Detective, so go home and think
about it. We'll continue this
conversation tomorrow.
Trang stands to leave, but the Director stops her.
DIRECTOR (CONT’D)
You may need to take an extra day
since the EMTs injected wound-care
bots in your shoulder.

INT. LIEU HOUSE — DAY
Trang plays with her daughters, rough-housing with them and
the dog. Afterward, they play board games and help Margaret

Gavin enters the door, carrying two bags from the store.
LOREN NEWELLA
What's in the bag, Daddy? What have you got?
Gavin sets the bags on the kitchen counter and removes
several cupcakes.
GAVIN
You only get these if you eat all
your dinner.
He then removes a bottle of wine and kisses Trang on the
cheek.
GAVIN (CONT’D)
Same goes for you, young lady.
Trang laughs and shakes her butt.
TRANG
I think you know what that means,
old man.
They sit down and eat dinner, but halfway through a loud BEEP
from Trang's transponder signals a message has arrived.
She grabs the device and pushes the 'talk' button.
DIRECTOR (V.O.)
The search team didn't find
Hainley. I'd like you to reconsider

INT. DIRECTOR'S OFFICE — DAY
The Director presses a button on the intercom, and a few
seconds later, JENNA, his admin (50, professional, arrogant
air), walks in.
JENNA
You wanted me, sir?
DIRECTOR
Get Shousa on the phone. Better
yet, make it a video call.
Jenna walks out and seconds later the Director's monitor
alerts him to an incoming video call. He sits up straight and
waits for the image to appear. Within seconds, SHOUSA (40s,
commanding, stern), comes on the screen.
SHOUSA (V.O.)
You called?
DIRECTOR
ASD Lieu turned down the
assignment. She's citing contract
options.
SHOUSA (V.O.)
As is her right, but options or
not, she has to take the
assignment. Hainley is a ticking
time bomb.
DIRECTOR
I understand, but she’s made up her
mind.
SHOUSA (V.O.)
Then you have to change her mind.
She's the only ASD with a removable
kill switch, and the others can’t
travel through time because of the
bots. Do what's necessary to
convince her, but get it done.

TRANG
I rejected that assignment — the

Gavin turns and looks up to her.
GAVIN
That's the first time, isn't it?
TRANG
I think it's because I'm getting

that could happen.
Gavin mutes the TV, then hugs her and kisses her cheek.
GAVIN
Everyone gets scared now and then,

TRANG

GAVIN

TRANG
What about Loren?
GAVIN
I received a message from the

Ambush at the Lieu House
EXT. LIEU HOUSE — DAY
THREE MEN (30s, hooded sweatshirts), fire at Gavin and the
girls from behind a hovercar parked at the curb.
Gavin and the girls take cover behind the concrete stoop, but
a shot hits his leg before he’s protected. Blood runs down
the side and past his knees.
TRANG
Stay down!
Trang dives to the ground and rolls. When she gets up, she
holds a weapon in her hand. She fires twice at a man who’s
hiding behind the front of the car. He goes down, and Trang
focuses on the second one, who ducks below the wheel.
She moves quickly and gets behind her another car, then
dashes toward the street. She turns and fires three more
times, taking out the second one.
With only one assailant left, Trang stealthily approaches, a
fierce expression on her face. She flips the switch on her
weapon to 'mild stun' and moves slowly in a crouched
position.
Trang risks a quick look and sees the man behind a tree in a
neighbor's yard. She fires once to his right, then dashes
forward.
He moves left, away from the shot. At just that moment, Gavin
and the girls make a break for the hovercar.
The last shooter aims and fires, hitting Gavin in the chest.
He goes down, stained in blood.
Trang’s instincts click in, and she rushes the shooter,
firing the whole time. One of her shots hits him, and he
falls to the ground, paralyzed.
Trang moves quickly and kneels over him, weapon held to his
face.
TRANG (CONT’D)
Who gave the orders?
A CRUNCHING sound is heard as the man bites down on a capsule
containing a fast-acting poison. Trang panics and pries open
his mouth, but it's too late.

is on the ground. She grabs Gavin, lifts him, and places him

TRANG

Trang falls to the ground and cries harder. The girls stand

Loren wipes tears from Trang’s face.
LOREN

Trang hugs Newella and stifles tears.
TRANG (CONT’D)

buries her head between the girls’ hair and sobs.

The Director holds up his hands and shakes his head.
DIRECTOR

Trang leans forward, to within inches of the Director’s face.
TRANG (CONT’D)

I’ll start the investigation.
The Director turns his head and hides a smile.
DIRECTOR
Are you sure about this? You'll
have to travel back in time.
TRANG

DIRECTOR
Our people believe he’ll target the
year 2044. Major advancements in
technology happened that year.

TUNG ZHAO (V.O.)
She said —
DIRECTOR
No need to translate. I know
gloating when I hear it.
(a beat)
I just hope Trang never finds out.
SHOUSA (V.O.)
Don’t forget to remove her kill
switch. She can’t go back with it
implanted in her.
DIRECTOR
If we remove the switch, we'll have
no way to control her.
SHOUSA (V.O.)
And we'll have no one to send after
Hainley if we don't; besides, if
she becomes a concern, we can send
others back to take care of her.
DIRECTOR
You know that normal people can't
endure the stress of time travel;
we've tried it.
SHOUSA (V.O.)
They can last long enough to do
their mission, and if they die,
they die.
DIRECTOR'S OFFICE — SOMETIME LATER
Trang sits in front of the Director, and he presses a button
on the bottom of a drawer in his desk. A panel in the wall
behind him opens, revealing a large safe.
He undergoes a retinal scan to open another door and removes
a small device the size of a communicator from the top shelf.
He steps back and hands the device to Trang.
DIRECTOR
This is what you'll need to travel.
Trang holds the device and inspects it.
DIRECTOR (CONT’D)
The device you're holding is your
lifeline. Enter the date you want
to travel to, enter the GPS, and
hit the green button. There’s a lot
more to know, but I can send
instructions to your new apartment.
DIRECTOR (CONT’D)

And don't forget there is a 'no-
killing' rule. It is a death-
penalty offense.
TRANG
Good luck with that.
The Director leans toward his computer and brings up a recent
image of Hainley, then he spins the monitor around so it
faces Trang.
DIRECTOR
Hainley has access to a new device
that uses light and shadows to
alter a person's appearance, but
what we don’t know is if it is made
using technology that would prevent
it from being transported back in
time. If it works, then he may be
difficult to identify.
(a beat)
I've also provided enough cash for
you to buy appropriate clothes and
anything else you need.
(a beat)
One more thing: besides not having
your suit, you won’t have enhanced
abilities, both of which make you
vulnerable.
TRANG
I'm ready. When do we go?
DIRECTOR
The sooner the better.
INT. DIRECTOR'S OFFICE — DAY
The Director opens the top drawer of his desk and hands Trang
a small flash drive.
DIRECTOR
This contains everything you need
to know.
He holds up a device, which looks similar to a communication
device. The Director hands it to her, and when she activates
it, a warp appears and she steps through.
