KAYLA JENNINGS, attractive (30’s), is seated at her office
desk next to a large window overlooking a big city. Kayla is
reading a memo and listening to a conference call.
On the credenza is a plaque which reads, “Kayla Jennings -
Outstanding Young CPA.” Next to the clock sits a framed
photo of Kayla and her boyfriend, RICK KELLER (30’s).
On the other end of the credenza sits a frame holding a photo
of Kayla as a child on a swing set being pushed by her
grandfather, PASTOR MICHAEL O’CONNOR (70’s).
Neatly stacked piles of folders cover Kayla’s desk leaving
just enough space for her phone, calculator, and legal pad.
A white board hangs on the wall with the word “Pending”,
followed by a list of a dozen business names.
Beeps can be heard as Kayla’s conference call ends. Kayla’s
assistant enters the office and hands Kayla a file folder and
several messages.
ASSISTANT
Your grandfather called. He said
it was urgent.
Kayla glances at the photo of her grandfather, then checks
the clock on her credenza as she fidgets with her pen.
ASSISTANT (CONT'D)
You’ve got the Gala tonight.
KAYLA
I don’t have time for a party.
She fidgets with her pen some more.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
I guess I could go for awhile and
work on the Foster file tonight.
Kayla takes the folder and phone messages from her assistant
and stuffs them into her briefcase.
ASSISTANT
What about your grandfather?
KAYLA
I’ll have to call him later.
Kayla picks up her briefcase, grabs her coat and hurries out.

A Night of Choices
INT. HOTEL LOBBY - NIGHT
Kayla enters the brightly lit lobby where guests are arriving
in formal attire. She removes her coat revealing a stunning
evening gown. She glances at a large mirror and takes a
second to fix her hair with her hand.
After a brief stop to check her coat, Kayla walks into the
warm glow of a ballroom where dozens of people are gathered.
She grabs an hors d’oeuvre from a waiter’s tray.
Kayla is taking in the scene of people decked out in formal
dress. Some talk and others dance near the stage where the
band performs.
Kayla scans the crowd and sees Rick in his tuxedo waving at
her. As Kayla walks towards Rick, her phone rings. She
returns to the lobby and takes the call. Her face registers
disappointment as her call ends just as Rick joins her.
KAYLA
Sorry to do this, Rick, but
something just came up. I need to
get back to the office.
RICK
Kayla, this is the third time this
month you ditched me.
Disappointed, Kayla bites her lower lip and steps closer to
Rick.
KAYLA
I know, Rick, but I’m swamped.
This is crazy time for me at work.
RICK
You don’t need to work twenty-four-
seven. There’s no time for us.
Kayla’s phone buzzes, she begins to open her purse but stops.
RICK (CONT'D)
(softly)
I don’t need this Kayla.
KAYLA
(softly)
You’re right, Rick. You deserve

Rick locks eyes with Kayla for a moment.
RICK
Well, I guess this is it then.
Frustrated, Rick gives a shake of his head.
RICK (CONT'D)
Good luck on your career, Kayla.
Rick walks towards a sign for the parking garage. Kayla
retrieves her coat. She stops to look in the direction of
the garage for a moment before walking to the taxi stand.

Packing Up the Past
INT. KAYLA’S OFFICE - DAY
Kayla’s desk is cluttered with folders. She selects a couple
and tucks them into her briefcase. She is staring at the
mess on her desk when her assistant enters the office.
KAYLA
Did Risk call this morning?
ASSISTANT
No calls this morning. How long
will you be in Brookville?
KAYLA
Not sure, probably a few days.
ASSISTANT
I’m glad you’re using some vacation
days. Hopefully you won’t have to
forfeit days like last year.
KAYLA
Brookville isn’t my idea of a
vacation spot. But I’m looking
forward to seeing my grandfather.
ASSISTANT
I always try to see my family this
time of year.
Kayla picks up the frame containing the photo of her and
Rick. She studies the photo.
ASSISTANT (CONT'D)
Kayla? Anything I can help with?
KAYLA
Nope, there’s nothing anyone can do
for me.
Kayla closes her briefcase and puts on her coat. She takes
the photo of her and Rick out of the frame, tears it in half,
and drops the pieces into the trash can.
Kayla stops at her assistant’s desk. Her assistant has a
photo of her children taped onto the wall of her cubicle.
Kayla hands her assistant the empty frame.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
That pic of your kids would look
great in this.
Kayla places her briefcase on her assistant’s desk, opens it
briefly to make sure she has every thing.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
I plan to be back in time for the

important calls get scheduled. I
don’t want to miss anything. You
know how this place is, out-of-

A Cold December Reunion
INT. COFFEE SHOP - DAY
On this cold December morning, Kayla and her best friend
since high school, TRISH THOMAS, are seated at a table next
to a window. Trish, (30’s), high energy, sips coffee with
Kayla in a shop decked out with Christmas decorations.
All the tables are full and the baristas are hustling as they
serve a line of customers. The steam from coffee machines
and many conversations have the coffee shop buzzing.
Christmas music plays on the shop’s sound system.
TRISH
How was your flight?
KAYLA
You know how those commuter flights
are: very cramped.
Kayla studies a document in front of her.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
This will be a lot of work.
TRISH
Saint Mark’s?
KAYLA
Yeah, nothing is digitized. It’s
all on paper, stuffed in boxes. I
guess it’s pretty much the way it
was when I was a kid.
TRISH
Are they in bad shape?
KAYLA
My grandfather said the Diocese may
close the church. Attendance and
contributions are way down. Pap is
a great pastor but he’s not very
good at managing a budget.
TRISH
Sorry to hear that. It’s a good
thing you are here.
KAYLA
There’s not much I can do.
Trish takes a bite of Muffin.
TRISH
I got a muffin for you. They’re
delicious.
KAYLA
(chuckles)
I better not. Trying to watch my
weight.
TRISH
(chuckles)
Of course, you are. I wish I had
your will power.
Trish takes a sip of coffee.
TRISH (CONT'D)
You haven’t said a word about Rick.
How’s things going with you guys?
Kayla takes a long sip of her coffee.
KAYLA
Well, it’s over.
TRISH
Oh, Kayla, I’m so sorry. What
happened?
KAYLA
Oh, It’s my fault. I’ve been
putting in a lot of hours at work.
Kayla pauses.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
We made a lot of plans for the
future. But that’s all gone.
Kayla pauses, takes another sip of coffee.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
I messed up. He deserves better.
TRISH
I’m so sorry, Kay. Its hard trying
to juggle everything.
KAYLA
I’m trying to make partner in my
firm. It takes all of my time.
TRISH
Sometimes I get overwhelmed with
work but I try to make time for fun
stuff.
Trish chuckles.
TRISH (CONT'D)
Tuesday night karaoke is a hoot.
Trish and Kayla share a laugh.
TRISH (CONT'D)
I’m sorry about you and Rick. A
change of scenery might do you some
good. And it’s good you get to
spend some time with your
grandfather.
KAYLA
I haven’t seen him much and I’m
happy to help Saint Mark’s. That
church is his life.
TRISH
We used to have a lot of fun at
Saint Mark’s.
Trish chuckles and continues.
TRISH (CONT'D)
Remember when we were acolytes at
and your candle caught Jimmy
Miller’s banner on fire?
Kayla and Trish howl.
KAYLA
Oh my God, I forgot all about that.
What a disaster!
TRISH
The expression on Jimmy’s face when
he saw the flames ...
KAYLA
And you pulled it down and stomped
out the fire.
TRISH
You know I always got your back.
Trish takes a sip from her coffee.
TRISH (CONT'D)
Saint Mark’s was a big part of our
lives.
KAYLA
That was a long time ago.
TRISH
Well, now you have an opportunity
to get reacquainted with Saint
Mark’s and help your grandfather.
KAYLA
He’s the only family I’ve got, so
I’m glad to help. But it’s bad
timing. My job is crazy this time
of year.
TRISH
It’s time for family now.
Kayla nods and takes a long sip from her cup.
KAYLA
Until I review their records, I
won’t know if they have any
options.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
They need to generate a lot of
revenue in December or the Diocese
may shut them down. Their
Christmas festival is in three
weeks but it never makes much
money.
TRISH
I don’t go to Saint Mark’s very
often. Not much happening there.
It might take more than a festival
to get them back on track.
KAYLA
Nothing personal, but I don’t want
to spend any more time in
Brookville than I have to. I need
face time with my boss. Besides,
there’s nothing to do here.
TRISH
Oh, it’s not so bad here, things
are changing.
Trish glances at her watch.
TRISH (CONT'D)
Grab your coffee, I want to give
you a quick tour.
KAYLA
I should be heading to Saint
Mark’s.
Trish stands, puts on her coat and grabs her purse.
TRISH
This will only take a minute and
then you’ll be on your way.
Trish offers Kayla a piece of gum.
TRISH (CONT'D)
Gum, Kay?
KAYLA
Oh, no thanks.
TRISH
I’ve been chewing lots of gum
lately. Keeps my mind off smoking.
Two months now, no cigarettes.
KAYLA
That’s great, Trish. Keep it up.

INT. TRISH'S CAR - DAY
Trish pulls her car out of the coffee shop parking lot and
drives along the highway. Lots of Christmas decorations
adorn businesses and a “Merry Christmas” sign stretches
across the highway.
KAYLA
There’s not a lot that I miss about
Brookville but I do miss Christmas
here. The decorations, the parties,
and that anticipation I used to
have leading up to Christmas. The
Christmas spirit seems to get lost
in a big city.
Trish nods in agreement as she chomps on her gum.
TRISH
Yeah, Brookville goes all out for
Christmas. Mostly to drive up
sales but the Christmas season does
lift our spirits.
Trish points to a building.
TRISH (CONT'D)
That hardware store opened up last
year and it’s lot is always full.
Trish points to another building.
TRISH (CONT'D)
That’s the new farm-to-table
restaurant. We can never get
reservations. They’re always
booked.
Near the restaurant is an abandon cluster of stores with
boarded up windows and doors.
KAYLA
Pull in here for a second.
Trish pulls the car into the lot with abandoned stores.
Kayla gets out of the car and stares at the vacant buildings
for a moment and then gets back in the car.
TRISH
Everything o.k.?
Kayla is quiet for a moment and then speaks softly.
KAYLA
My parents would bring me here
after church for ice cream. We
would sit in the car eating our
cones and laugh about silly stuff.
Kayla’s eyes well up with tears.
TRISH
Ahhh, sorry Kayla. I know how much
you miss your parents. It’s got to
be hard bringing back all those
memories ... but they’re good
memories.
After a moment, Trish drives out of the lot and points to
another building.
TRISH (CONT'D)
See that building beyond the
shopping plaza? That’s a new
medical building. My firm has the
leasing contract and it’s almost
full.
KAYLA
It’s nice to see that Brookville is
making progress.
TRISH
(laughs softly)
Remember Karl Cuppett from high
school? He’s an optometrist and
leases space in there.
KAYLA
I can’t picture him as an
optometrist. Wasn’t he always
squinting his eyes?
TRISH
He hated wearing glasses.
Trish and Kayla share a laugh for a moment. Trish blows a
bubble with her gum as she drives.
TRISH (CONT'D)
Brookville has been through a lot.
I can’t believe I’ve been here my
whole life.
Trish pauses for a moment and chews her gum.
TRISH (CONT'D)
I used to have some regrets about
not leaving. But I couldn’t be
happier. It isn’t the big city but
it’s getting better.
Trish pauses, chuckles.
TRISH (CONT'D)
You know, a CPA could do well
building a practice here.
KAYLA
I’m sure there’s plenty of
opportunity but I’m afraid that I
would be bored to death. There’s
no opera, no theater, no designer
stores ...
TRISH
(chuckles)
Do you go to those places?
KAYLA
Occasionally. But I know that I’ll
want them someday.
TRISH
(laughs)
You know, I remember a little girl
who was absolutely convinced that
someday she would be riding
elephants in the circus.
KAYLA
(laughs)
How do you remember that!?!
Trish pulls her car into the coffee shop parking lot near
Kayla’s car.
TRISH
Well, here you go, Kay.

to meet here again this week?

A Heartfelt Reunion
INT. PASTOR O’CONNOR’S OFFICE - DAY
Kayla stands next to a doorway with a sign next to it which
reads, “Pastor O’Connor.” Pastor Michael O’Connor is beyond
retirement age. He is kind, generous, and overworked. He is
forgetful at times and has trouble remembering names.
His desk is cluttered with folders. More folders and papers
are stacked on a table. He has a small picture frame on one
corner of his desk next to a vase with wilted flowers.
Kayla knocks on her grandfather’s open door.
KAYLA
Hi Pap!
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Kayla!
Kayla hurries to her grandfather and gives him a hug. A tear
runs down her cheek as she holds onto her grandfather.
KAYLA
I missed you, Pap.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
My dear Kayla, I missed you too.
How are you?
KAYLA
I’m having some ups and downs, but
I’m ok. How are things going?
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Well, I’m afraid I’ve gotten myself
in quite a mess.
KAYLA
I’m so sorry, Pap. Do you have an
idea of the shortfall?
PASTOR O’CONNOR
I’m not sure. But we can’t pay our
vendors.
KAYLA
What about your parishioners?
Surely they can give more!
PASTOR O’CONNOR
They have reached their limit. You
know the old saying: ‘You can’t get
blood from a turnip’.
KAYLA
Can the Diocese help?
PASTOR O’CONNOR
They’ve been helping but it hasn’t
been enough. Unless things turn
around soon, I’m afraid that we’ll
be closing our doors.
KAYLA
Have you found anyone to lead the
Christmas Festival? A successful
festival might help.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
No leader yet. I’ll call our
leaders this morning.
KAYLA
Pap, your leaders need to step up!
This is their church too.
A frustrated Kayla sets her briefcase on the floor and gives
her grandfather another hug.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
Don’t worry, Pap, we’ll work
through this. I should get started
on your financial records.
Pastor O’Connor nods in the direction of a stack of file
boxes in the corner of his office.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
There they sit. There’s a spare
office down the hall when you want
to get started. Your room is also
ready in the parsonage, so make
yourself comfortable.
Kayla glances at the file boxes, then looks at her phone.
KAYLA
Pap, do you have wi-fi here?
PASTOR O’CONNOR
No cable. It’s too expensive.
Pastor O’Connor leans back in his chair.
PASTOR O’CONNOR (CONT'D)
Kayla, I can’t begin to thank you
for helping me.
PASTOR O’CONNOR (CONT'D)
I wouldn’t impose if this wasn’t
such a grave situation.
KAYLA
I’m happy to help.
Pastor O’Connor removes his glasses.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
Uh oh, it’s never good news when
you take off your glasses.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Kayla, there is a lot of need in
our community. And sometimes we
stray from our budget. But we are
guided by the principle that,
“Whoever is kind to the poor, lends
to the LORD, and He will reward
them for what they have done.”
KAYLA
I understand.
Kayla walks to the stack of file boxes. Pastor O’Connor gets
up from his chair and his legs wobble. He holds on to the
edge of his desk and sits back down.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
You okay, Pap.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Another dizzy spell. The doctor
says that it’s stress. Too many
worries about money, I guess.
Kayla leans over to give her grandfather a hug.
KAYLA
Pap, you need to see you doctor. I
need you. Your church needs you.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
I know, I know. I have another
doctor’s appointment soon.
Kayla notices the framed photo of Kayla and her parents on
her grandfather’s desk. The photo is yellowed and cracked
from age. Kayla picks it up and studies it for a moment.
PASTOR O’CONNOR (CONT'D)
I miss your mom and dad every day.
I count my blessings that I have
you in my life.
Kayla places the photo back on the desk.
KAYLA
I’m blessed to have you too, Pap.
It’s just you and me, so you need
to take better care of yourself.

Unexpected Help
EXT. STREET OUTSIDE OF COFFEE SHOP - CONTINOUS
The handsome driver of the truck, TYLER KINGMAN, continues to
turn the key but the engine won’t turn over.
Tyler (30’s), handsome, wears a flannel shirt which tends to
exaggerate his rugged appearance. He wears an old pair of
cowboy boots.
Brochures on the passenger seat of his truck read, “Live
Event Staging Productions.” Several farm equipment
catalogues lie underneath the brochures.
There is a tap on the truck’s passenger window. A smiling
young man, A.G., motions for Tyler to lower his window.
Tyler rolls down his window and the cold winter air rushes
into his truck. Tyler gives a shiver.
A.G. (20’s) is muscular and very fit. His smile is
contagious. He wears a white, hooded sweatshirt with the
word “SAINTS” on it.
A.G.

KAYLA
Church festival. And it needs a
lot of work. My grandfather is the

TYLER
Looks like fun. Let me know if I

KAYLA
I’m sure you don’t want to drive to

TYLER
This time of year? I drove here

KAYLA
Really? You need to get out more.
They share a laugh.
TYLER
So what do you do in Brookville?
KAYLA
I grew up here but just visiting

TYLER
Do you miss it?
KAYLA
I miss the people. Brookville is
very friendly but it’s too small

snobby, but I’m a big city person.
TYLER
What kind of work do you do?
KAYLA
I’m a CPA.
TYLER
Wow, that’s great. I could use the

KAYLA

Tyler smiles as he sips his drink.
TYLER

KAYLA
You need someone local. I don’t

A Sunny Connection
EXT. COFFEE SHOP SIDEWALK - DAY
As Kayla and Tyler exit the coffee shop, she nods in the
direction of Tyler’s truck.
KAYLA
That’s an unusual truck. Kind of
old isn’t it?
TYLER
(laughs)
Yeah, it was my dad’s. Not worth
much but it means a lot to me.
Tyler turns to Kayla, looks into her eyes.
TYLER (CONT'D)
I hold onto things that I like.
Kayla responds with a smile. Tyler extends his grease
covered hand to Kayla. Kayla looks at it for a second,
laughs, and hands Tyler a napkin from her purse.
KAYLA
We need to clean you up.
TYLER
Oops, sorry about that.
Tyler takes the napkin and tries but isn’t able to clean the
grease off his hand.
KAYLA
(laughs)
Nice meeting you, Tyler.
Kayla walks around the corner. Tyler gets into his truck,
closes his eyes, then tries the ignition. It starts.
TYLER
Sun’s smiling again, and so am I.
INT. TYLER’S TRUCK - CONTINUOUS
As Tyler waits at a red light, he notices A.G. across the
street in a shopping center parking lot, helping an elderly
couple load bags into their car. Tyler drives into the lot
but A.G. is gone.

A Whiff of Possibility
INT. KAYLA'S CAR - DAY
Kayla is driving when she passes the farm-to-table restaurant
she had seen with Trish. It’s parking lot is full. Kayla
rolls down the window to take in the aroma.
KAYLA
(mumbles to herself)
That smells delicious.
When stopped at a traffic light, a noisy tractor trailer
carrying several farm tractors passes Kayla. She chuckles to
herself when her phone rings. She answers on the speaker.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
Hey, Trish.
TRISH (V.O.)
Well?
KAYLA
Well, what?
TRISH (V.O.)
How did it go with farm boy?
KAYLA
He seems nice for a guy covered in
grease.
TRISH (V.O.)
Nice? He’s gorgeous and he works
for a living. Did he ask for your
number?
KAYLA
He wants me to visit his farm.
Says he needs help with his
business plan.
TRISH (V.O.)
I hope you said yes.
KAYLA
I told him I was too busy and that
he needs someone local.
TRISH (V.O.)
What?
KAYLA
I don’t know anything about him,
except that he’s a farmer who’s
just getting started. Besides, I’m
not ready for a another
relationship.
Kayla pauses, speaks softly.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
I don’t know if I’ll ever be ready.
TRISH (V.O.)
You know, I met Bill in an airport
terminal. Who knew that encounter
would produce a wonderful marriage.
Trish pauses.
TRISH (V.O.)
But don’t mind me, I never know
when to shut up.
KAYLA
(laughs)
I don’t know what I’d do without
you. I’ll call you later. I’m
pulling into Saint Mark's.

Community Spirit at Saint Mark's
EXT. SAINT MARK'S CHURCH - DAY
Kayla walks towards the church and stops for a moment to take
in the peaceful surroundings.
Birds chirping and kids playing nearby seem very relaxing.
She takes a deep breath and loses her smile as she enters the
church.
EXT. CHURCH FIELD - DAY
Several men are standing on the edge of the field which
adjoins the church. Their teenage sons are throwing a
football and running around on the field.
Six, seven-foot pine trees lay on the ground next to tree
holders and some tools. Several stacks of boards used to
construct booths are positioned around the field.
One dad, TODD (30’s), lifts up the trunk of a tree.
TODD
Let’s create an entry way with them
like we did last year.
The men quickly arrange the trees on the ground where they
will stand. Todd takes a look at the trees on the ground.
TODD (CONT'D)
We could use two large trees for
the center.
Just then, a pickup truck pulls up and A.G. hops out of the
passenger door. He walks to the rear of the truck, drops the
tailgate, puts on a pair of work gloves, and pulls two, ten-
foot pine trees off the truck.
He raises the tail gate, then gives a shout to the driver who
drives away. A.G. drags the two trees to the group of
fathers.
A.G.
Can you use a couple of trees?
The dads clap their approval.
TODD
Sure! Great timing. Did one of
our guys send these over?
A.G.
Nope, just thought you might need
them. I’m A.G.
A.G. removes his gloves and shakes everyone’s hands. A.G.
takes a look at the unassembled booths on the field.
A.G. (CONT'D)
Can you use some help?
TODD
Sure, there’s more work than we can
handle.
A football rolls into the group and stops at A.G.’s feet.
BOY
Dad, throw it long!
TODD
My arm’s sore!
A.G. picks up the ball.
A.G.
Haven’t thrown one of these in
ages. Do you mind?
TODD
Go for it.
A.G. motions with his hand for the boy to run.
A.G.
Run as fast as you can, count to
ten. The ball will be on your
right shoulder!
TODD
(laughs)
He runs the sixty in eight seconds.
Sure you can throw that far?
The boy runs towards the end of the field. A.G. smiles as he
cleans some mud off the ball. The boy is running in high
gear as A.G. takes a step and throws the ball, a bullet.
The boy looks back just as the ball arrives, right on target.
The boy catches it, gives a shout, and spikes the ball.
The dad’s erupt in applause and shouts.
DAD ONE
That throw was incredible!
DAD TWO
You threw that without warming up
your arm!?!
Watching from his office window, Pastor O’Connor takes in the
scene as he sips from his cup.
TODD
That must have been sixty yards!
One of the fathers calls out.
DAD ONE
Seventy, on a rope!
TODD
Where did you play ball?
A.G.
Quite a ways from here.
TODD
I remember a Canadian player named
A.G.
The boy returns with the football, tosses it to A.G.
BOY
Great throw. Kick one!
The boy takes off down the field. A.G. takes a step and
punts the ball high into the air. It carries far down the
field, over the boy’s head, and through the uprights.
The group of dads erupt into claps and cheers. Pastor
O’Connor’s eyebrows raise as he watches the ball finally hit
the ground.
A.G. laughs as the boys and their dads huddle around A.G.
A.G.
Just like scoring points in a big
game, no task is too difficult if
we set on hearts and minds on it.
Let’s set up booths tomorrow
afternoon? Can you guys make it?
The dads and their sons all answer in the affirmative. A.G.
claps his hands and the huddle breaks. A.G. walks towards
the parking lot as Todd and another Dad drag one of the trees
that A.G. delivered.
DAD
(grunting)
How’d that guy drag two of these?
TODD
Must be those football workouts.

A Light in the Sanctuary
INT. CHURCH SANCTUARY - NIGHT
A.G. walks into the back entrance of the empty, dark
sanctuary. It’s very quiet and the only light is provided by
the exit sign near the door. He notices a stack of Festival
fliers sitting on a table and takes one.
In the front of the sanctuary, near the alter, Pastor
O’Connor holds a small flashlight as he inspects a circuit
breaker panel mounted on the wall.
Pastor O’Connor turns a switch and a spotlight beams on him
from above.
A.G.
The people that walked in darkness
have seen a great light!
Pastor O’Connor, using his hand to shield his eyes from the
spotlight, tries to see who has spoken.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
They that dwell in the land of the
shadow of death, upon them hath the
light shined!
A.G.
Isiah couldn’t have said it better
himself!
Pastor O’Connor laughs, straining to see who is speaking.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
While you’re back there, turn on
those wall switches to your left?
A.G. complies and the sanctuary brightens. A.G. makes his
way to the front of the sanctuary.
A.G.
Hello, Pastor, I’m A.G.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Oh yes, I saw you with the football
this afternoon. I understand
you’re from Canada.
A.G. chuckles as he holds up his festival flier.
A.G.
I’m visiting Brookville for a few
days and I heard about your
festival. I would like to help, I
do a lot of volunteer work.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Well, son, we could certainly use
some help. First time to Saint
Mark’s?
A.G.
This is my first visit but we’re
all connected, especially this time
of year.
Pastor O’Connor turns off his flashlight and places it in his
pocket.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Very well stated, young man. We
are all one family. But I’ll need
to refer you to our festival
director.
A.G. notices the folded church bulletin sticking out of
Pastor O’Connor’s shirt pocket. It has the letter K and a
phone number scribbled next to it.
PASTOR O’CONNOR (CONT'D)
I’m meeting with Kayla, our
festival director, this evening.
I’m sure she will welcome the help.
Pastor O’Connor clears his throat and lowers his voice.
PASTOR O’CONNOR (CONT'D)
Although I haven’t yet asked her to
head up the festival. We’re very
short-handed.
A.G. smiles and shakes Pastor O’Connor’s hand.
A.G.
I’m sure the festival will be a
success. We just need a little
Christmas spirit. I know Kayla,
I’ll touch base with her.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
How do you know Kayla?
A.G.
We had coffee together this
morning.

your offer to help.

INT. PASTOR O'CONNOR'S OFFICE - NIGHT
Pastor O‘Connor returns to his office. As he takes a seat at

PASTOR O’CONNOR
Come in Kayla. Did you see the
young man who just walked out of
the sanctuary?
Kayla smiles as she sets her bag on a chair and pulls out her
notebook.
KAYLA
Nope, didn’t see anyone. Who did I
miss?
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Oh, a Canadian fellow, the uh,
football player. He says he knows
you. I think he said his name was
A.J.
KAYLA
I don’t know any Canadian football
players.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
He’s young, lots of muscles, very
athletic, big smile. He said that
he had coffee with you this
morning.
KAYLA
This morning? Do you mean A.G.?
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Yes, I think that’s it. He
volunteered to help you with the
festival. He said he would be in
touch with you.
Kayla has a very puzzled expression on her face.
KAYLA
This is very strange. I don’t know
the guy .... and he wants to help
me with the festival?
PASTOR O’CONNOR
We’re going to need a lot of help
to bring the festival together.
Kayla gives her grandfather a hug.
KAYLA
Pap, I thought you were going to
check with some of your leadership?
Pastor O’Connor removes his glasses.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
I checked with several of our
leaders. Unfortunately, they are
not available.
Pastor O’Connor drops his head and speaks softly.
PASTOR O’CONNOR (CONT'D)
No one wants to man the oars of a
sinking ship. But I know that God
is still at the helm.
KAYLA
I don’t think I can pull it off.
I’ve been away too long. I don’t
know that many people anymore.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
I understand but it’s just a matter
of making a few assignments. Maybe
our new friend can help. He seem’s
like a real go-getter.
Kayla flips through her notebook.
KAYLA
I’m afraid I don’t know anything
about him. Does he attend Saint
Mark’s?
PASTOR O’CONNOR
No, he’s not one of ours but as I
think about it, Pastor Thompson did
say he would try to send us someone
from the seminary.
Still flipping through her notebook, Kayla responds.
KAYLA
I don’t know, Pap. It might be a
problem giving responsibility to a
stranger. It wouldn’t be good if
he messed things up.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
In normal times, I would agree with
you.
PASTOR O’CONNOR (CONT'D)
But given our desperate situation,
we can’t afford to turn anyone
away.
Pastor O’Connor hands two, typed pages to Kayla.
PASTOR O’CONNOR (CONT'D)
This check list should get you
started. All I ask is that you
give it a try. The festival may be
our last hope of keeping the doors
open at Saint Mark’s.
KAYLA
I hope I don’t disappoint you, Pap.
I don’t have any experience
organizing something like this.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Let God strengthen your faith and
he will help us through the storm.
Kayla places the festival notes in her bag, walks out of
Pastor O’Connor’s office, and exits the church.

EXT. PARSONAGE - NIGHT
Kayla walks to the parsonage in the quiet of the evening.
Only a distant train whistle can be heard. She glances at

closes her eyes and her lips move as she prays silently.
A shooting star streaks across the sky.
When Kayla is about to enter the parsonage, her phone buzzes.
She looks at the screen, it reads, “Providence.” She bites
her lower lip, hesitates for a moment, and then answers.
KAYLA
Hello, this is Kayla.
A.G.
Kayla! Hi, it’s A.G. We met at

A.G.

KAYLA
Excitement? We haven’t done

A.G.
Some businesses want to participate
and quite a few people want to help
out. I lined up some guys to set
up booths along the field tomorrow
afternoon. We’re kicking off with
hotdogs and burgers around Noon if
you can make it.
Kayla’s face lights up with the encouraging news.
KAYLA
Yeah, sure, Noon is good. Um...
thank you.
A.G.
Great! See you then. And don’t
worry about a thing.
KAYLA
Ah, A.G., there are a lot of steps
in this process so there needs to
be some coordination.
A.G.
Absolutely! We will compare notes
tomorrow. This will all come
together nicely. Merry Christmas!
Kayla turns off her phone and drops it into her bag. She
glances at the stars again.

I hope this is coming from you.

INT. CHURCH OFFICE - DAY
Kayla is seated at a desk surrounded by file boxes. Stacks of
file folders are neatly arranged on her desk. She is
reviewing a document and circling numbers with a red pencil.
Kayla’s cell phone vibrates. She takes the call.
KAYLA
Hello, this is Kayla. No, I’m
sorry. I can’t be back in the
office that soon. Can I join the
meeting by phone? I’m out of town
dealing with a family problem. OK,
let them know that I’ll be on the
call. Can you please do me a favor
and explain my situation? Thanks,
see you later.
Kayla ends her call and leans back in her chair as she stares
at the boxes in her office. After a moment of reflection,
she picks up the pencil and continues reviewing the document.
Pastor O’Connor enters the room carrying a file box. He
places it on Kayla’s desk.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
I found another one. This should
be the last of them. How does it
look?
KAYLA
Well, there are quite a few unpaid
bills, some are older than a year.
Kayla pauses for a moment as she reviews her notes.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
It’s certainly not frivolous
spending. It’s checks to people
for rent, utilities, prescriptions,
even some gift cards for groceries.
Kayla lowers her notes and smiles at her grandfather.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
Pap, you never could say no. I
don’t have a number yet but its
going to be way over your budget.
Pastor O’Connor hangs his head as if he’s being scolded.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
I’m just trying to help those in
need and having faith that God will
provide.
KAYLA
Pap, I only have faith in a
balanced ledger.
Pastor O’Connor removes his glasses.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
I received a call from the Diocese
this morning. They want our
financial assessment as soon as we
can provide it.
KAYLA
I need to compare the invoices with
bank statements and that will take
some time. I could really use a
few more days.
Kayla writes on her pad, “ASAP” and circles it a couple of
times with her pen.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
I’ll let them know. Thank you for
what you’re doing Kayla.
Pastor O’Connor leaves Kayla’s office. Kayla leans back in
her chair and fidgets with her red pencil.
After a moment, she scans a list of names and phone numbers
on a sheet of paper. She takes a deep breath, then dials a
number on the desk phone. She gets a recording.
KAYLA
Good morning, I’m Kayla Jennings
calling from Saint Mark’s church.
I’m hoping you will help me
organize this year’s festival.
When you have the opportunity, will
you give me a call at the church
office. Thank you.
Kayla makes a note on the list and is about to make another
call when her cell phone buzzes.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
Hi, Tyler.
Kayla smiles as she listens to Tyler.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
I’m sorry, I can’t get away, I’m
swamped.
Kayla glances out her office window to see some people

EXT. CHURCH FIELD - DAY
The aroma of food fills the air and laughter can be heard
from dozens of people gathered around two food trucks parked
next to the field. A row of Christmas trees line the
entrance.
Kayla glances in the direction of the parking lot before she
walks towards the field when she notices that more than a
dozen booths have been erected. Several men are hammering
boards together to make festival booths.
A.G. (O.S.)
Kayla!
A.G. arrives accompanied by a teenage boy carrying a tray of
cups full of cocoa.
A.G. (CONT'D)
Remember me? I’m A.G. Glad you
could make it.
KAYLA
Nice to see you again, A.G. What’s
happening here?
Kayla accepts a cup of cocoa from the boy. A.G. takes a
folded paper out of his pocket and shows it to Kayla.
A.G.
We’re off to a great start on the
booths but nothing is anchored. So
we can move things wherever you
want.
KAYLA
Don’t change a thing. It’s just as
I remember it.
Kayla laughs as she survey the booths again.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
(laughs)
I think they are the same booths
that they used when I was a kid.
How did you get everyone here?
A.G.
Food!
A.G. nods in the direction of the food trucks.
A.G. (CONT'D)
They’re contributing the food
today. And if you approve, on
festival day, we can get ten trucks
to share twenty-percent of their
proceeds with St. Mark’s.
KAYLA
Of course, I approve. How is that
possible?
A.G.
This is a slow time of year for
them, so they were happy to do it.
Kayla takes her check list out of her bag and shares it with
A.G. He scans it.
KAYLA
These are some ideas I had for
booths. I’ll check in with some
businesses around town to see if
they can participate.
A.G.
We can get the booths up if you can
fill them. The fire hall has
booths in storage from last

firemen are helping with the setup.

But we need someone to bring in a

A.G. smiles as he reviews his list.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
Oh my gosh, the Diocese sent you.

A.G. folds his paper and puts it into his pocket.
A.G.

KAYLA
Pap and I really appreciate what

A.G. scans the activity around them. Hammering of the

A teenage boy with a football walks up to Kayla and A.G.
BOY
Hey, A.G., will you sign my ball?
A.G. takes a pen out of his pocket and scribbles his initials

A.G.
I need to put these young men to

A.G. walks off with the boys. Kayla sips her cocoa and takes
in the scene of families working on Christmas decorations

Then, a gentle tap on her shoulder.
TYLER
I hope I’m not interrupting?
Kayla greets Tyler with a big smile.
TYLER (CONT'D)
This is the best lunch idea ever!
Kayla takes Tyler by the arm and they walk to the trucks.
KAYLA
Food truck hot dogs, pretty
special, huh?
TYLER
I love it. So this is what’s
keeping you busy?
KAYLA
Set up for the festival is a lot of
work. And I’ve been juggling
assignments from my real job. So
it’s a bit hectic. But everything
got just got better.
Kayla and Tyler get in line at a food truck just as A.G.
approaches from the parking lot, leading a group of boys
carrying boxes of Christmas decorations.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
You know that guy who rescued you
and your truck the other day?
TYLER
Yeah, that guy was something.
Kayla nods in the direction of A.G. who directs the boys to
booths on the field. They hurry off to deliver their boxes.
A.G.
Tyler! Good to see you again!
Tyler glances at Kayla.
TYLER
Wait, what?
KAYLA
Tyler, meet our operations
director.
A.G. shakes Tyler’s hand.
A.G.
Just helping out.
TYLER
Great to see you again A.G.
I never got to thank you for
helping me the other day.
A.G.
No worries. When you have a
second, I could use your help with
something. I’ll be in the middle
of the field.
A.G. reviews his list as he walks onto the field.
KAYLA
Hmmm, wonder what that’s about?
TYLER
I’m happy to help, whatever it is.
But first, let me buy you a hotdog.
KAYLA
(laughs)
Food is on the house, courtesy of
A.G.
TYLER
Wow, that guy is something. Does
he work at Saint Mark’s?
KAYLA
He’s on loan from the Diocese.
TYLER
He’s something. I can see why you
would want to spend time with him.
KAYLA
(laughs)
If I wanted to spend time with
A.G., I wouldn’t be having lunch
with you.
Tyler smiles at Kayla as the vendor hands Tyler and Kayla hot
dogs. They take a seat at a picnic table and begin to eat.
Kayla gets a little ketchup on her chin.
Tyler looks over the field and the setup activity.
TYLER
How I can I help you?
KAYLA
You’ve got a farm to run. You
don’t have time for this.
TYLER
I wouldn’t mind if I could spend
time with you.
Kayla giggles.
KAYLA
You’re sweet but I think we can
manage the setup.
TYLER
Will you be having a live nativity?
KAYLA
Oh, that would be great but I don’t
think we can pull that off.
TYLER
Nothing to it. I could have my
guys build a frame and we could
drop it off with some hay and a
couple of sheep.
KAYLA
Tyler, why would you go to all that
trouble?
Tyler uses his napkin to wipe the spot of ketchup off of
Kayla’s chin.
TYLER
(smiling)
You don’t know?
Kayla replies with a smile.
TYLER (CONT'D)
Have you figured out how long
you’ll be in Brookville?
KAYLA
Not sure, probably a few more days.
I’ve got to get back to my job soon
or they’ll forget about me.
TYLER
I would love for you to visit
Sweetwater.
KAYLA
I’ll let you know if there’s time.
But I’m anxious to get home.
Tyler smiles as he squirts some mustard onto his hotdog.
TYLER
Why did you leave Brookville?
Kayla pauses for a moment.
KAYLA
I lost my parents in a car crash
when I was in college. It would
have been hard to come back without
them here.
TYLER
Oh, Kayla, I’m sorry. That’s gotta
be tough. Do you have other
family?
KAYLA
It’s just me and my grandfather.
The vendor from the other food truck stops by the table to
offer Tyler and Kayla some samples of food served on
toothpicks. They each take a few.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
A.G. hopes to get a bunch of food
trucks here for the festival and
have them contribute something to
Saint Mark’s.
Tyler takes a bite of food.
TYLER
My buddy Bubba has a barbecue
truck. He would love this.
Kayla checks the time on her phone.
KAYLA
Oh, shoot! I hate to do this but I
should be heading back inside. I
have a long list of people to call.
TYLER
Thanks for breaking away.
They stand as Tyler grabs their trash and drops it into a
trash can. Tyler scans the field for a moment.
TYLER (CONT'D)
I’ll find A.G. and see what’s on
his mind. Some coincidence that he
is working on your festival.
KAYLA
Very strange but very much
appreciated.
Tyler extends his hand.
TYLER
Don’t worry, I cleaned up today.
Kayla smiles and shakes Tyler’s hand.
KAYLA
Sorry this was so short but I’m so
glad you came.
Still holding Kayla’s hand, Tyler replies softly.
TYLER
I enjoyed every second.
Kayla walks to the church and Tyler walks onto the field.
Kayla takes in the scene of booths being assembled and
decorated. Several groups of people are eating and talking
as kids run around the field playing.
When Tyler meets A.G., the two walk to the end of the field.
A.G.
I would like your advice on our
stage location. What do you think
about using this end of the field?
TYLER
Just curious, why ask me?
A.G.
You’re the only guy I know who
drives around with stage production
brochures in their truck.
Tyler laughs, then looks to the end zone area before making a
360 degree turn to survey the field.
TYLER
I suggest that you elevate the
stage enough to be seen from the
back of the field. Otherwise,
everyone bunches up in the front.
And if you are going to have a lot
of people on stage, you should have
some risers. There’s nothing worse
than having a crowded stage.
People have a tendency to fall off.
A.G. laughs and nods in agreement.
A.G.
Very good. An elevated stage and
some risers.
TYLER
And don’t forget about the sound
system. You need to consider how
you position speaker towers so you
don’t block out the audience.
A.G.
Excellent advice.
TYLER
What about reserving some space
near the stage for dancing? Line
dancing to Christmas songs is a
thing.
A.G.
Audience participation, great idea.
But won’t we need special music?
TYLER
What’s your line up for the
festival?
A.G.
We have a little bit of everything.
A magician, a juggler, choirs, bell
ringers, everything but a headliner
who can draw a crowd on Saturday
night. Someone who can get people
line dancing. Any ideas?
TYLER
Not off hand.
A.G.
We don’t need a big name, just
someone who people will remember
when they leave here. Perhaps a
talented musician who wouldn’t mind
helping a pastor and his church.
Tyler smiles as he takes another look around the field.
TYLER
Saturday night doesn’t give us a
lot of time.
A.G. writes his phone number on a slip of paper and hands it
to Tyler.
A.G.
Call me if you have any ideas.
Tyler places the slip of paper in his wallet.

Kayla sits in a dimly lit office. Her desk lamp provides the
only light in the room. She reviews a document and when
finished, she circles the number ”-50K”.
Upset over the amount of the deficit, Kayla sits at her desk
with her head in her hands.
A.G. stands in her doorway holding a bag. He knocks quietly.
A.G.
A bit overwhelmed with church

Kayla forces a smile.
A.G. (CONT'D)
Or is it the disappointment that

KAYLA
I was just resting my eyes.
A.G. removes a paper coffee cup and a straw from his bag and
places them on Kayla’s desk. He takes another cup from the
bag for himself.
A.G.
Mind if I join you for a moment?
KAYLA
Please, have a seat and thanks for

Kayla removes the lid from her drink and takes a sip.

A.G. nods with a smile and they both sip from their drinks.

A.G. stands and picks up his drink.
A.G.

KAYLA
Oh, no thanks. I was about to walk

(laughs)
No way.
Tyler takes Kayla’s hand and twirls her gently a couple of
times to the delight of the students. The song and dancing
ends to a loud cheer from the students.
Tyler claps his approval to the performance by the students.
Tyler whispers in Kayla’s ear.
TYLER
We make a pretty good team.
KAYLA
(laughs)
I had no idea what I was doing.
Tyler raises his hands to get the attention of the students.
TYLER

Tyler leads the group upstairs and assigns a bedroom to Gus,

TYLER

super firm, I hope its ok?
KAYLA
(chuckles)
It’ll be fine but you shouldn’t
give up your bedroom.
TYLER
I’ve got to keep an eye on those
boys downstairs. Can’t have them
burn the place down.
Kayla laughs as she steps inside the bedroom to check it out.
TYLER (CONT'D)
Mrs. Garber, you can probably
squeeze the girls in the other

find everything you need but let me
know if you need something.
As his guests check out their rooms, Tyler takes a stack of
blankets from a hall closet and checks in with Mrs. Garber.
TYLER (CONT'D)

No, no, don’t give up all your beds

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
The boys stake out sofas and other furniture to sleep on
while Tyler and Kayla return to the kitchen.
Over the next few minutes, the house quiets, the lights dim,
and only the crackling fires and the howling wind can be
heard. The warm glow of the fireplaces provides a comforting
contrast to the storm raging outside.
INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT
TYLER
Pretty crazy evening.
KAYLA
I wouldn’t have wanted it any
different.
TYLER
Kayla, I’m sure that I’m not the
only guy in your life. But I’m
enjoying our time together.
KAYLA
My life is a bit unsettled. I
recently broke up with my
boyfriend, so I’m just taking one
day at a time.
TYLER
That’s fair enough.
Tyler hands Kayla a cookie.
TYLER (CONT'D)
Have you tried these? Its my
secret recipe.
Kayla takes a bite.
KAYLA
This is delicious. What’s in it?
TYLER
I can’t remember, I never write
anything down. But its got lots of
butter, honey, and other healthy
stuff.
KAYLA
(laughs)
I used to make cookies with my mom.
I think I ate more batter than
cookies.
TYLER
Want to help with breakfast?
KAYLA
Sure, what time are you starting?
TYLER
Probably six. I don’t know what
time they’ll want to leave but I’m
guessing it will be early.
KAYLA
Where did you learn to cook?
TYLER
I just search for a recipe and if I
have the stuff, I give it a shot.
KAYLA
Fearless! I should probably get
some sleep. Six AM isn’t that far
off. This was a lot of fun and I
love your place, it’s spectacular.
Kayla takes a bite of cookie and gets some chocolate on her
cheek.
TYLER
I would be miserable if you weren’t
here. You’re the spark that gets
me going.
Tyler takes a napkin out of his pocket.
TYLER (CONT'D)
You got some chocolate on you.
Tyler attempts to dab the chocolate off of Kayla’s cheek.
Kayla pulls back for a moment and then relaxes.
Tyler dabs the smudge then kisses Kayla. It’s short, sweet,
and draws a spattering of laughter from the boys wrapped in
blankets on the sofas and chairs.
Tyler rolls his eyes.

Tyler is running the mixer. The countertop is cluttered with
bags of flour, containers of buttermilk, sugar, baking
powder, and other ingredients.
On the counter near the stove is a platter full of sausages
with five cartons of eggs stacked next to them.
Kayla walks in with a yawn and a smile. She is wearing one
of Tyler’s sweatshirts which has an image of a cowboy riding
a bull with the wording “Rodeo Days” underneath the image.
KAYLA
Good Morning. Quite an operation
your got here.
Tyler smiles and turns down the mixer speed. He grabs two
mugs from the cupboard.
TYLER
How did you sleep?
KAYLA
Like a rock. I hope you don’t mind
me raiding your wardrobe?
TYLER
(laughs)
It looks good on you.
Tyler pours coffee, slides the sugar and creamer to Kayla,
and turns off the mixer.
TYLER (CONT'D)

TYLER
Yup. Your phone might have
service. But that’s always hit or
miss around here.
Kayla rolls her eyes.
KAYLA
I’ve got to be online for work.
How can you live like this?
TYLER
It’s a challenge at times.
Kayla surveys the kitchen and all of the food assembled on
the counters.
KAYLA
Wow, you could feed an army. What
are you making?
TYLER
Buttermilk pancakes, farm fresh
eggs, and sausage.
KAYLA
So much food.
TYLER
It’s a country thing.
KAYLA
How can I help?
TYLER
Let’s enjoy our coffee. It will
only take a few minutes to grill up
the pancakes and sausage.
KAYLA
How about the eggs?
TYLER
I’ll make them to order. People
are very particular about their
eggs.
KAYLA
(laughs)
Is that right?
TYLER
Sure. How do you like yours?
KAYLA
I usually have an omelette.
TYLER
See, you’ve got a favorite but it’s
way too much work.
KAYLA
I guess an omelette is a lot like
life. You get out of it, what you
put into it.
A little taken back by Kayla’s comment, Tyler responds
softly.

scrambled, so I guess that says a

Kayla laughs loudly.
KAYLA
Oh, that’s a good one!
Tyler shrugs his shoulders with a smile.
TYLER
It’s a country thing. Not sure how

Kayla stares at Tyler waiting for an explanation.

The boys help themselves to cocoa. Tyler nudges Kayla.
TYLER
See what I mean about eggs? They

In a few minutes, everyone has assembled in the kitchen and
living room area and are enjoying a hearty country breakfast.
A spectacular view of the snow covered countryside is

The students laugh.
Tyler enters the Living room carrying a narrow box which is

TYLER
The Christmas pickle is very
special. Its an old tradition that

Tyler turns to Kayla and continues.
TYLER (CONT'D)
Even in the darkest times, there is

Tyler hands the ornament back to the student.
TYLER (CONT'D)
The custom is to hide the pickle
somewhere on the tree where its

Christmas morning is said to have
good luck in the coming year.
Tyler gives the student a wink and she disappears behind the
tree to hang the ornament.
TYLER (CONT'D)
When I was a kid, I never found
that pickle. Like most things, you

Tyler glances at Kayla and receives a smile.
Kayla, Trish, and Mrs. Garber step back to look at the fully
decorated tree.
MRS. GARBER

selfies with Tyler as Mrs. Garber tries to hurry them along.
MRS. GARBER
Tyler, thank you for your gracious
hospitality. This is a field trip
that we’ll always remember.
Mrs. Garber takes one last look around the room for items the
students may have left. She picks up a hat, a mitten, and a
phone charger. She drops them in her bag, hurries to the
garage, and boards the bus.

INT. GARAGE - CONTINUOUS
Tyler, Kayla, and Trish wave goodbye from the garage as Gus

TRISH
Kay, are you ready?
Kayla looks at the oversized cowboy sweatshirt she’s wearing.
KAYLA
Almost.
TYLER
(laughs)
Keep it. A reminder of your crazy
visit.
The three laugh for a moment. Kayla and Trish put on their
coats. Trish gets into the driver’s seat of her car and
starts the engine. Tyler opens the passenger door for Kayla.
Kayla gives Tyler a kiss.
KAYLA
Country living isn’t quite as bad
as I thought.
Tyler hands Kayla her cowboy hat.
TYLER
Can’t forget the hat. You’re
country now.
Kayla laughs and puts on the hat.

EXT. CHURCH OFFICE - DAY
Kayla is reviewing her notes. Two huge poinsettias sit on
her desk. Pastor O’Connor knocks softly on the open door to
her office. He walks in using a cane.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Kayla, do you have a second?
Kayla rushes to her grandfather, gives him a hug, and helps
him into a chair.
KAYLA
Oh, Pap. Are you alright?
PASTOR O’CONNOR
I’m fine. The doctor adjusted my
medication and they gave me the
cane in case I get wobbly again.
Kayla holds onto her grandfather for a moment.
KAYLA
Pap, you’ve got to take it easy.
Pastor O’Connor pats Kayla’s hand for a moment.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
I had some time to think about
things when I was lying in that
hospital bed. I have come to the
realization that there is only so
much we can do by ourselves.
Pastor O’Connor removes his glasses.
PASTOR O’CONNOR (CONT'D)
I don’t want you to get upset. But
I must tell you that the Diocese
has decided to close Saint Mark's
at the end of the month. We don’t
have enough parishioners or
financial support to keep our doors
open.
Kayla is silent for a moment as she takes a seat.
KAYLA
Oh, Pap, I’m so sorry. But I don’t
understand. We haven’t submitted
our report.
Kayla pauses.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
How could they do this!?!
Pastor O’Connor shrugs his shoulders and uses his cane to
help him walk towards the door.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
I suspect the Diocese made up their
minds a long time ago. There are a
lot of churches that need help and
I’m afraid that Saint Mark's is in
too deep of a hole.
KAYLA
What about the festival? What if
it’s a big success?
Pastor O’Connor stops at the doorway and turns to Kayla.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
I’m afraid it would take divine
intervention to change the mind of
the Bishop. Thank you for all that
you have done. There is no need to
keep you here any longer.
Kayla gets up from her desk and walks to the window to look
at the festival setup.
KAYLA
Pap, I’m staying until we get
through the festival. A few more
days won’t matter.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Well, our friend C.J. seems to have
it well in hand. And since the
Diocese has made its decision,
there’s no need for us to do the
impossible. Perhaps you were right
about it being better to have faith
in the balance sheet.
Pastor O’Connor walks out of Kayla’s office.
In contemplation, Kayla stares out the window. She returns
to her desk, takes a deep breath and picks up the phone. She
dials a number.
KAYLA

you spare a couple of hours to help

TRISH
Oh, no! That’s horrible!

How’s your grandfather?
KAYLA
I don’t think it has sunk in yet.
I’m worried about him.
TRISH
The Diocese must have plans for

Kayla nods as she sips from her coffee.
TRISH (CONT'D)
He handles things well. He never

Trish chuckles.
TRISH (CONT'D)

KAYLA

And all he said was, “At least its

Kayla is quiet for a moment.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
I never tried a cigarette after

Trish takes a sip of coffee.
TRISH
Are you going to stay for awhile?
KAYLA
Yeah, I told Pap that I would stay

TRISH
Maybe you’ll have time to see Tyler
again.
Kayla smiles and takes a bite of yogurt.
KAYLA
I really like Tyler but I don’t
have the time to coax him along.
TRISH
Kay, you had reservations because
you thought he was a struggling
farmer. He’s a very talented guy
who just needs some encouragement.
Trish adds some sugar to her coffee as she gives a shake of
her head.
TRISH (CONT'D)
Guys like Tyler are one in a

KAYLA
Yeah, maybe but my world is

Pap’s health problems, I could lose
him.
A tear streams down Kayla’s cheek.
KAYLA (CONT'D)

As Pastor O’Connor finishes scanning one of the sermons, he
notices A.G. standing in his doorway. He motions with his

PASTOR O’CONNOR
Come in, friend, come in.
A.G. walks into the office and takes a look at all the
sermons on display.
A.G.
Considering a re-run Pastor Mike?
PASTOR O’CONNOR
What can I say that I haven’t said

A.G. smiles as he picks up the sermon from Nineteen Eighty-
Nine. He turns a page, then another.
A.G.
You were feelin that one. Probably
around the time Kayla was born.
Pastor O’Connor smiles as he sits back in his chair.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Oh, yes, the joy one feels when
they experience their first
grandchild.
Pastor O’Connor reminisces for a moment. A.G. sets down the
sermon.
A.G.
The message of Christmas never gets
old. Just speak from the heart.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
I suppose you’re right but I’m not
feeling much of the Christmas
spirit.
A.G. places a hand on Pastor O’Connor’s shoulder.
A.G.
Christmas is a gift of hope. We

Kayla must be on top of your list.
Pastor O’Connor nods and smiles.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
You’re so right. She is a true

A Festive Collaboration
EXT. CHURCH FIELD - DAY
Hundreds of people are gathering in the area around Saint
Mark's where music, laughter, food, and families reign.
The athletic field adjacent to Saint Mark's has been
transformed into a winter wonderland.
Next to the athletic field, a portable ice rink has been
assembled and a sign in front of it reads, “Skate Rental.”
Tiki torches line the perimeter.
Parked on the edge of the field by the parking lot are a
dozen food trucks decorated with Christmas lights and
garland. One truck, Bubba’s Bar-B-Q, has a grill setup next
to it where smoke billows. It has a long line of customers.
Skilled artists put their finishing touches on very
impressive ice sculptures.
A row of booths feature artists making and displaying their
wares. A glass blower makes ornaments and other festive
items while children watch.
At the far end of the athletic field is an elevated stage
which can be seen from everywhere. A bank of speakers sit on
each end of the stage.
A group of children handbell ringers perform on stage while
parents and onlookers snap photos.
A.G. is directing a group of boys and their fathers. The
fathers carry large kettles which have “Saint Mark’s” painted
on them.
Pastor O’Connor exits the church. He has decorated his cane
with red and white tape to look like a candy cane.
He walks onto the field, and begins shaking hands with
parishioners and visitors. He sees A.G. near the center of
the field and approaches his new friend.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
You have done a marvelous job!
A.G. smiles and shakes Pastor O’Connor’s hand.
A.G.
Kayla filled the booths with the
sights, sounds, and smells of
Christmas. Are you feelin it?
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Yes, friend. I believe I am.
A.G.
Do you have a moment? I need your
approval for something.
A.G. and Pastor O’Connor walk to the front of the church
where two men are putting the finishing touches on a wood
frame structure.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
And what do we have here?
A.G.
This is where our live nativity
scene will begin after the five
o’clock service.
Pastor O’Connor stares at the structure for a moment.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
This is something special. It’s
quite in the spirit of things.
One of the men walks to his pickup truck nearby where several
bales of hay sit in its bed. He grabs a bale, carries it to
the frame, and drops it.
PASTOR O’CONNOR (CONT'D)
Who will be our cast?
A.G.
The children who are in the pageant
and their parents.

EXT. CHURCH FIELD - NIGHT
As Trish and Kayla walk in the direction of the food trucks,

A bluegrass band takes the stage and plays Christmas carols,
accompanied by many voices in the crowd.
A long line of children wait in line to see Santa who sits on

TRISH

TRISH

The men shake hands with Trish and Kayla.

transformed into a sea of people.
PASTOR O’CONNOR (CONT'D)

KAYLA
It wasn’t me, Pap. All of
Brookville came through.
Bishop Carter points in the direction of the entrance to
Saint Mark's.
BISHOP CARTER

Several charter buses and a school bus can be seen in the
distance unloading passengers onto the sidewalk. As they
watch the crowd grow, a man walks by carrying a large kettle.
TODD
Hi, Pastor Mike.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Looks as we have a lot of generous
friends among us.
TODD
This is the second time we had to
change out the kettles.
Pastor O’Connor shouts some encouragement as the man makes
his way to the church.
PASTOR O’CONNOR

BISHOP CARTER
This is quite remarkable.
MR. JOHNSON (60s) and his family approaches Pastor O’Connor.
MR. JOHNSON

PASTOR O’CONNOR

MR. JOHNSON
I’m afraid I’ve been distracted but

Tyler’s eyes are fixed on Kayla and she nods her approval.
Several choir members jingle sleigh bells as Tyler walks to
the stage microphone to introduces his next song.
TYLER
Nothing says Christmas like a
sleigh ride with the one you love.
Mrs. Garber takes a seat at the piano as Tyler joins the
chorus to sing a verse of “Sleigh Ride”. When the verse

learned at Tyler’s farm.
Mid-way through the song, the boys give a whoop, and place

Pastor O’Connor is in disbelief as he scans the table full of

Pastor O’Connor looks at his guests in disbelief.
A.G. takes a folded up paper from his pants pocket, looks at

A.G.
Pastor Mike, rather than end the

PASTOR O’CONNOR
Well, I don’t know. That’s an

A Night of Gratitude and Hope
INT. PASTOR O'CONNOR'S OFFICE - NIGHT
Money kettles from the festival are stacked against a wall.
Money bags full of donations are scattered around the floor
of the office. Pastor O’Connor, Bishop Carter, Pastor
Thompson, Kayla, Tyler, and Trish walk into the office.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Rob, when we have an accounting of
the proceeds, I’ll share it with
your office. Hopefully we will be
able to take care of our debt.
BISHOP CARTER
You know Mike, its become quite
apparent this evening that Saint
Mark's is an integral part of this
community. Saint Mark’s must
remain open. I’ll get with our
committee in the morning. You just
need some help here.
PASTOR THOMPSON
I wholeheartedly agree. I’m sure
we can supply you with seminary
volunteers who can assist until you
get staffed properly.
Pastor O’Connor, is in disbelief. He places a hand on his
cane to steady himself. Fearing her grandfather is having
another one of his dizzy spells, Kayla reaches for his arm.
KAYLA
You okay, Pap?
Kayla stands next to her grandfather to keep him steady.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
I never felt better! It’s a
miracle, truly a Christmas miracle.
Pastor O’Connor turns to Bishop Carter and Pastor Thompson.
PASTOR O’CONNOR (CONT'D)
I’m blessed beyond words. My
granddaughter and her friends have
done a fantastic job. And I
suppose that I have one of you to
thank for sending A.G. our way.
Bishop Carter and Pastor Thompson shrug their shoulders.
BISHOP CARTER
I just met him for the first time.
PASTOR THOMPSON
I haven’t met him before tonight.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Gentlemen, he organized the set-up,
brought us the food trucks, and
successfully promoted the event in
just a couple of weeks. And given
his spiritual nature, I assumed he
was sent to us by one of you.
Bishop Carter and Pastor Thompson look at each other and
share a laugh.
BISHOP CARTER
He’s not from the Diocese but we
would love to work with him.
PASTOR THOMPSON
Sounds like someone the seminary
should get to know. We have lots
of projects that would benefit from
his talents.
Kayla and Trish laugh. Kayla looks at her phone.
KAYLA
A.G.’s phone I.D. has him in
Providence. Does that mean
anything to you?
The three clergymen look at each other for a moment before
they break into smiles.
BISHOP CARTER
Mike, we’ll let you communicate our
appreciation to your friend from
Providence.
Pastor Thompson nudges Bishop Carter.
PASTOR THOMPSON
Rob, we should get going. We both
have early mornings.
BISHOP CARTER
Mike, thanks for having us here
this evening. It was a joyous
celebration. Congratulations to
you and Saint Mark’s. You have
things well in hand here.
Bishop Carter and Pastor Thompson shake Pastor O’Connor’s
hand and leave the church.
Pastor O’Connor gives Kayla a hug.
PASTOR THOMPSON
It’s as if the heavens opened up
before us this evening.
KAYLA
Pap, it was wonderful for all of
us.
Trish sticks a piece of gum in her mouth.
TRISH
Amen to that. Kay, I need to get
going. But I might stop by Bubba’s
truck on the way to my car.
Everyone laughs as Trish departs for the field.
TYLER
I should be on my way. I’m sure
you both are exhausted.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Do you have to make that ride over
the mountain?
TYLER
It’s not so bad.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Why don’t you wait until morning.
The three leave the church office and exit the church.

A Christmas Connection
EXT. OUTSIDE OF CHURCH - NIGHT
Kayla holds her phone in her hand. It lights up and she
glances at it.
KAYLA
It’s a message from A.G. He’s
returning a rental truck and says
he’s off to another assignment in
the morning. Says he’ll be in
touch.
Kayla drops her phone in her bag.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
Where do you suppose he’s from?
Pastor O’Connor smiles and chuckles.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
I don’t know but he’s an answered
prayer.
Kayla smiles as she takes Tyler by the arm.
KAYLA
He brought us together.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Tyler, I’ve got a very comfortable
sofa in the parsonage. Perhaps you
could join us at services in the
morning.
KAYLA
That’s a great idea. And I can fix
us breakfast.
Kayla looks at Tyler.
KAYLA (CONT'D)
How’s that for fearless?
Tyler laughs while Pastor O’Connor clears his throat.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
The last time you baked for me, you
put steak sauce in the cookies
instead of vanilla.
Kayla takes Pastor O’Connor by the arm, holding both of her
men close as the walk.
KAYLA
(laughs)
I cooked breakfast for a bus load
of kids last week. Pancakes,
sausage, and eggs to order.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
You cooked all of that? Doesn’t
sound like your usual yogurt
breakfast.
KAYLA
It’s a country thing. How do you
like your eggs Pap?
Pastor O’Connor looks over to Tyler and gives him a wink.
PASTOR O’CONNOR
Scrambled, of course. I can
already smell those sausages and
hot cakes.
The three laugh as Kayla pulls her men a little closer.
PASTOR O’CONNOR (CONT'D)
Tyler, I’ve got plenty of stomach
medicine, just in case.
They laugh as the church bells usher in Christmas.
KAYLA
You know, I’ve got a feeling
everything is going to be alright.
I love Christmas.
