As they work, we see across the lake a lone horseman entering

Master Li is here!
ANGLE ON: Li Mu Bai, thirties, powerful and handsome.
In the background, old Aunt Wu, at the sight of Li Mu Bai,
drops her parcels and runs excitedly into the building.

Scene 2 - A Meeting of Sorrow and Resolve
Yu, a beautiful woman in her early 30s, is finishing packing
for the convoy, wrapping a few small items in a linen
wrapper, as Aunt Wu bursts in.
AUNT WU
Li Mu Bai is here!
INT. YUAN PRACTICE HALL - DAY
LI
How's everything?
AUNT WU
Fine. Please come in.
Yu sits, composed, as Aunt Wu ushers Li in. Li carries a
large object, wrapped in silk.
Yu smiles.
YU
Mu Bai...It's been too long.
LI
It has.
(he glances around
the room)
How's business?
YU
Good. And how are you?
LI
Fine.
An awkward pause.
YU
Monk Zheng said you were at Wudan
Mountain. He said you were
practicing deep meditation.
LI
Yes.
YU
The mountain must be so peaceful...
I envy you. My work keeps me so
busy, I hardly get any rest.
LI
I left the training early.
YU
Why? You're a Wudan fighter.
Training is everything.
LI
During my meditation training... I
came to a place of deep silence...
I was surrounded by light... Time
and space disappeared. I had come
to a place my master had never told
me about.
YU
You were enlightened?
LI
No. I didn't feel the bliss of
enlightenment. Instead... I was
surrounded by an endless sorrow. I
couldn't bear it. I broke off my
meditation. I couldn't go on.
There was something... pulling me
back.
YU
What was it?
LI
Something I can't let go of. You
are leaving soon?
YU
We're preparing a convoy for a
delivery to Peking.
LI
Perhaps I could ask you to deliver
something to Sir Te for me.
Li unwraps the object. It is an ancient, astonishingly
beautiful sword.
YU
The Green Destiny Sword? You're
giving it to Sir Te?
LI
I am. He has always been our
greatest protector.
YU
I don't understand. How can you
part with it? It has always been
with you.
LI
Too many men have died at its edge.
It only looks pure because blood
washes so easily from its blade.
YU
You use it justly, you're worthy of
it.
LI
It's time for me to leave it behind.
YU
So what will you do now?
Li doesn't reply.
YU
Come with me to Peking. You can
give the sword to Sir Te yourself.
It'll be just like old times.
LI
First I must visit my master's
grave. It's been many years since
Jade Fox murdered him. I have yet
to avenge his death. And yet I'm
thinking of quitting. I must pray
for his forgiveness.
YU
Join me once you have finished. I
can wait for you in Peking.
LI
Perhaps.

Scene 4 - The Weight of Unspoken Feelings
Yu presents the sword to Sir Te.
SIR TE
This is Li's personal sword, a
great hero's weapon! He is the
only one in the world worthy of
carrying it. It's too fine a gift.
I cannot accept it.
YU
Sir Te! It has brought him as much
trouble as glory. Help him to
leave these troubles behind.
Otherwise, he'll never be able to
start anew.
SIR TE
All right. I'll act as the sword's
custodian.
De Lu, the head servant, enters.
DE LU
Governor Yu has arrived.
SIR TE
I must change.
YU
(getting up)
You've always been so good to Li Mu
Bai and me. Please accept our
thanks.
SIR TE
Please do not be such a stranger.
You'll stay the night as my guest.
Now, Shu Lien... tell me something.
And forgive me for prying. Your
father was a great friend to me,
and I think of you as my own
daughter.
YU
Please, Sir Te, what is it?
SIR TE
Li Mu Bai giving up his sword and
his warrior days... maybe he's
trying to tell you something?
YU
I don't know...
SIR TE
Don't be coy. I've always known
about your feelings for each other.
All these years, it's a shame...
neither of you is brave enough to
admit the truth to the other.
You're both wasting precious time.
YU
I beg your pardon. Li Mu Bai and I
aren't cowards.
SIR TE
When it comes to emotions, even
great heroes can be idiots. Tell
me if Li Mu Bai is not more open
the next time you see him. I'll
give him an earful!

De Lu opens the door and is startled to find a young woman
inside. The woman is studying the sheets of calligraphy
hanging on the walls.
DE LU
Who are you?
JEN
I'm your guest today. I am Governor
Yu's daughter.
DE LU
This is Sir Te's study. You are
here to...
JEN
I was looking for a quiet corner.
DE LU
I am Sir Te's head servant. And
this is another of our guests.

Scene 6 - A Sword's Weight
Yu gently lays the sword, still in its sheath, in Jen's hands.
JEN
It's heavy for such a thin piece of
metal!
YU
The handle is heavy. And the blade
is no ordinary metal. Still, the
sword is the lightest of weapons.
You're just not used to handling it.
JEN
But I have had much practice. As a
child in the West, a platoon lived
with us. They'd let me play with
their weapons. The scabbard is so
beautiful.
YU
Beautiful but dangerous. Once you
see it tainted with blood, its
beauty is hard to admire. It's 400
years old.
JEN
Exquisite! You said it belongs to...
YU
My friend Li Mu Bai. He's given it
to Sir Te as a gift.
JEN
Li Mu Bai! The famous warrior?
Why would he give his sword to Sir
Te?
YU
You're too young to understand.
JEN
You're a sword fighter too?
Yu yanks the sword out of the sheath. An eerie sound
resonates within the study. Jen is even more impressed.
YU
Yes, I am. But I prefer the
machete. Certain moves, however,
call for a sword.
JEN
Really?
Yu puts the sword back in the case.
JEN
(longingly)
It must be exciting to be a fighter,
to be totally free!
YU
Fighters have rules too: friendship,
trust, integrity... Without rules,
we wouldn't survive for long.
JEN
I've read all about people like you.
Roaming wild, beating up anyone who
gets in your way!
YU
Writers wouldn't sell many books if
they told how it really is.
JEN
But you're just like the characters
in the stories.
YU
Sure. No place to bathe for days,
sleeping in flea-infested beds...
They tell you all about that in
those books?
JEN
You know what I mean. I'm getting
married soon, but I haven't lived
the life I want.
YU
So I heard. Congratulations. It's
the most important step in a
woman's life, isn't it?
JEN
You're not married, are you?
YU
What do you think?
JEN
No! You couldn't roam around
freely if you were.
YU
You're probably right.
Yu studies Jen. The room falls silent for a moment.

Scene 7 - The Weight of Leadership
It's dusk and the sky is beautiful orange and purple. Jen
is leaving the study escorted by her maid. She turns to Yu
for a final good-bye. Yu seems intrigued by the encounter.
EXT. SIR TE'S COMPOUND - NIGHT
Two lighted lanterns are raised up.
INT. TE'S STUDY - NIGHT
Sir Te hands the sword to Governor Yu.
SIR TE
Go ahead, Governor Yu.
Governor Yu is impressed by the opulence and elegance of the
sword. He closes his eyes to guess the weight of the sword.
Te snubs out the flame from a candle, then slides the sword
out from its sheath. The sword gives off a luminous blue
glow in the dark.
SIR TE
Two feet 9 inches long. 1 inch
wide. The handle is 1 inch deep,
2.6 inches wide. Seven-tenths of
an inch thick. With seven rubies
missing from the hilt. You can
tell the design dates back to
before the Chin era. Engraved with
a technique lost by the time of the
Han Dynasty.
GOVERNOR YU
Your knowledge is remarkable, Sir Te.
SIR TE
A sword by itself rules nothing.
It comes alive only through skillful
manipulation.
GOVERNOR YU
I see your point. Please continue.
SIR TE
The Imperial Court isn't the
problem. With royalty and officials
everywhere, the Royal Guard keeps
security tight. But Peking is not
like the West. Here, you'll find
all sorts of characters. Proceed
with caution in your quest for law
and order. Don't depend only on
the court. Contacts in the Giang
Hu underworld can ensure your
position. Be strong, yet supple.
This is the way to rule.

Let me do it.
The maid leaves as the governess enters the room.
JEN
Please sit.
GOVERNESS
I've made you silk pajamas. Do you
want to change into them?
JEN
Put them down.
GOVERNESS
I heard you met Shu Lien today.
JEN
Do you know her?
GOVERNESS
She's one of those. Your mother
would not want you consorting with
her kind.
Jen shoots her an angry look.
JEN
I'll socialize with whomever I
please.
GOVERNESS
Don't invite danger into your
father's house.
She's about to say something, then thinks better of it.
JEN
I'm tired now.
GOVERNESS
Go to bed then. Miss has grown up,
and is getting married soon. God
knows what the future will bring.
JEN
It will be just the same. Enough!
I'm tired.
GOVERNESS
Autumn is coming. I'll shut the
windows for you.
The governess leaves. Jen sits on the side of her bed,
thinking.

YU
How so?
JEN

JEN
I'll write your name. Just for fun.
Jen writes Yu's name with great confidence and swiftness.
YU
I never realized my name looks like

Jen freezes slightly.
YU
You write gracefully. Calligraphy
is so similar to fencing.
JEN
Maybe it is. I wouldn't know.
The maid enters with tea.
JEN
Please.
YU
Thank you for seeing me. I hear
your wedding day is near. You must
be overwhelmed by the preparations.
JEN
I'm hardly doing a thing. The less
I think of it the better. My
parents are arranging everything.
The Gous are a very powerful family.
My marrying one will be good for my
father's career.
YU
You are fornuate to marry into such
a noble family.
JEN
Am I? I wish I were like the
heroes in the books I read. Like
you and Li Mu Bai. I guess I'm
happy to be marrying. But to be
free to live my own life, to choose
whom I love... That is true
happiness.
YU
Do you think so? Let me tell you a
story.
JEN
About you and Li Mu Bai?
YU
Yes. Did you know I was once
engaged to be married?
JEN
No, really?
YU
His name was Meng Si Zhao. He was
a brother to Li Mu Bai by oath.
One day, while in battle, he was
killed by the sword of Li Mu Bai's
enemy. After, Li Mu Bai and I went
through a lot together. Our
feelings for each other grew
stronger. But how could we dishonor
Meng's memory? So the freedom you
talk about, I too desire it. But I
have never tasted it.
JEN
Too bad for Meng, but it's not your
fault, or Li Mu Bai's.
YU
I am not an aristocrat, as you
are... but I must still respect a
woman's duties.
JEN
Don't distance us. From now on,
let's be like sisters.
YU
Then as a sister, let me wish you
happiness in your marriage.

Exciting, isn't it?
JEN
I owe you nothing.
FOX
Yes, you do! You are still my
disciple.
Jen lunges at the Governess, and the two exchange a few
blows. Jen presses her finger against one of the Governess's
pressure points, disabling her. Jen pushes her across the
room.
JEN
You think you've been teaching me
all these years from the manual?
You couldn't even decipher the
symbols!
FOX
I studied the diagrams. But you
hid the details!
JEN
You wouldn't have understood, even
if I had tried to explain. You
know... you've gone as far as you
can go. I hid my skills so as not
to hurt you.
FOX
If I hadn't seen you fight with Li
Mu Bai, I'd still be ignorant of
all you've hidden from me.
JEN
Master... I started learning from
you in secret when I was 10. You
enchanted me with the world of
Giang Hu. But once I realized I
could surpass you, I became so
frightened! Everything fell apart.
I had no one to guide me, no one to
learn from.
FOX
Believe me, I've a lesson or two
left to teach you!
Fox exits.

Li practices fluently with Green Destiny in hand, beautifully
at ease with the weapon. He spins around to find Yu standing
in the doorway.
YU
The sword is back... are you happy?
Li smiles.
LI
I admit, getting it back makes me
realize how much I'd missed it.
YU
But it's not your sword anymore.
You gave it to Sir Te.
LI
True. But I must borrow it for one
last mission. Jade Fox must die at
its edge. Did you know what you
were hiding when you covered for
that girl?
YU
My job was to get the sword back,
without embarassing anyone. I
wasn't about to ruin her life, or
her father's.
LI
You did your job well. But, this
girl... I saw her last night.
YU
I knew she would intrigue you.
LI
She needs direction... and training.
YU
She's an aristocrat's daughter.
She's not one of us. In any case,
it will all be over soon. You'll
kill Fox, and she'll marry.
LI
That's not for her. She should
come to Wudan and become a disciple.
YU
But Wudan does not accept women.
LI
For her, they might make an
exception. If not, I'm afraid
she'll become a poisoned dragon.
YU
It's not our affair. Even if Wudan
accepts her, her husband might
object.
LI
I thought by giving away the sword,
I could escape the Giang Hu world.
But the cycle of bloodshed continues.
YU
I wish there were something more I
could do to help you.
LI
Just be patient with me, Shu Lien.

Lower the shade, don't let them see

DARK CLOUD (LO)
Don't touch the women!
Though unharmed, Madam Yu immediately faints. Lo approaches
the carriage and grabs the comb from Jen's hand.
She bolts from the carriage, and, once outside, bends down

In a second, she's slammed his balls into his stomach and
knocked his nose into his face. He crumples to the sand.
The other bandits stop laughing, quickly exchange glances,

In a matter of seconds, they're either on the ground or

He dismounts, looks down at the dry creek bed.
LO
Well, there used to be! What's

arrows. She quickly grabs one of the arrows.
LO
If you like that arrow, I can make

Jen raises one of the arrows, going on the attack again, but
her legs betray her and she falls.
LO
You need to eat, understand? Then

Jen spits at Lo.
LO
I didn't think the Hans had names
like that.
Later: She weaves in and out of consciousness. In the
flickering lights, she sees Lo sharpening his arrows.
Later, he pulls back an opaque curtain to reveal a makeshift
bathroom -- a water-filled cavity serves as a tub.
He rises as Jen sobs at the sight of her imprisoned and
dishevelled body. He comes over and unties her.
LO
Relax. If I had wanted to, I would
already have done it. You must be
dying for a bath. Fresh water's
hard to get here. But I managed to
bring some up. You can wear my
clothes when you're done. They're
clean. Don't worry. I'll sing, so
you'll know where I am. After the
bath, you'll be calmer.
Jen nods and the bandit releases her. He starts to sing as
he walks out. Jen waits until the sound recedes before
closing the curtain behind her and dipping into the pit.
While she bathes, she listens to his singing, a loud
rendition of a tribal song. Lo apparently doesn't remember
all the lyrics, and la-las his way through more than a few
passages. Jen smiles.

Lo pauses.
LO

I want you to be mine forever. I

We have a legend. Anyone who dares

grant his wish. Long ago, a young
man's parents were ill, so he
jumped. He didn't die. He wasn't

wish had come true. If you believe,
it will happen. The elders say, "A

Characters in the screenplay, and their arcs:
Character | Arc | Critique | Suggestions |
---|---|---|---|
li mu bai | Li Mu Bai's character arc begins with him as a conflicted warrior, burdened by guilt and a sense of duty to avenge his fallen master. Throughout the screenplay, he grapples with his feelings for Yu and his responsibilities as a mentor to Lo. As he confronts Jade Fox and the complexities of love and duty, he evolves from a stoic figure into a more emotionally open character. By the climax, he learns to let go of the Green Destiny Sword, symbolizing his acceptance of the past and his commitment to a future where he can embrace love and mentorship without the weight of vengeance. Ultimately, he finds peace within himself, allowing him to fulfill his role as a protector and guide for the next generation. | While Li Mu Bai's character arc is compelling, it risks becoming somewhat predictable, as the themes of redemption and inner conflict are common in martial arts narratives. His stoicism, while initially intriguing, may lead to a lack of emotional engagement for the audience if not balanced with moments of vulnerability. Additionally, his relationship with Yu could benefit from deeper exploration to enhance the emotional stakes of his journey. | To improve Li Mu Bai's character arc, consider incorporating more dynamic interactions with other characters that challenge his beliefs and force him to confront his emotions more directly. Introducing moments of vulnerability, such as flashbacks or dialogues that reveal his fears and regrets, could create a stronger emotional connection with the audience. Additionally, exploring the complexities of his relationship with Yu in greater depth, perhaps through shared experiences or conflicts, could add layers to his character and make his eventual acceptance of love and mentorship more impactful. |
yu | Yu's character arc begins with her as a composed leader, focused on her duties and harboring unexpressed feelings for Li Mu Bai. As the story progresses, she faces challenges that force her to confront her inner conflicts, particularly her feelings of envy towards Li Mu Bai's peace and her own desires for freedom and love. Through various trials, including betrayal from Jen and the confrontation with Jade Fox, Yu evolves from a duty-bound leader to a more emotionally open individual. By the climax, she learns to balance her sense of duty with her personal desires, ultimately embracing her feelings for Li Mu Bai and fostering deeper connections with her team. The resolution sees her stepping into a role that harmonizes her leadership with her emotional depth, allowing her to lead with both strength and compassion. | While Yu's character arc is rich and multifaceted, it risks becoming overly complex without clear focus. The interplay between her leadership role and personal emotions is compelling, but it may lead to confusion if not executed with clarity. The emotional stakes could be heightened by ensuring that her internal conflicts are consistently reflected in her actions and decisions throughout the screenplay. Additionally, the resolution of her arc may feel rushed if not given adequate buildup, potentially undermining the emotional payoff for the audience. | To improve Yu's character arc, consider the following suggestions: 1. Establish clearer emotional stakes early on by showcasing specific moments that highlight her internal conflicts and desires. 2. Create pivotal scenes that force Yu to make choices that reflect her growth, allowing her to confront her feelings for Li Mu Bai and her sense of duty in a more tangible way. 3. Ensure that her relationships with other characters, particularly Li Mu Bai and Jen, evolve in a way that mirrors her internal journey, providing opportunities for meaningful dialogue and emotional revelations. 4. Allow for a gradual build-up to her emotional resolution, ensuring that the climax feels earned and impactful. 5. Incorporate moments of vulnerability that reveal her struggles, making her more relatable and deepening audience investment in her journey. |
sir te | Throughout the screenplay, Sir Te evolves from a figure of wisdom and authority to one who must confront his own limitations and the changing dynamics of power. Initially, he serves as a mentor, guiding Yu and Li Mu Bai with his insights and advice. As the chaos unfolds, he grapples with the urgency of the situation, realizing that his traditional methods may not suffice in the face of new challenges. By the climax, he must take decisive action, stepping out of his comfort zone to lead not just with wisdom but with courage. Ultimately, he learns to balance his authoritative nature with adaptability, embracing the need for change while still imparting his wisdom to the next generation. | While Sir Te's character is well-defined as a wise mentor, his arc could benefit from deeper emotional stakes and personal conflict. His journey primarily revolves around external events rather than internal growth, which may make him feel less relatable to the audience. Additionally, the transition from a cautious leader to a decisive figure could be more pronounced, with clearer moments of doubt and resolution that showcase his evolution. | To improve Sir Te's character arc, consider introducing a personal conflict that challenges his beliefs or methods. For instance, he could face a situation where his traditional wisdom fails, forcing him to confront his fears of change. Incorporating flashbacks or moments of vulnerability could deepen his character, allowing the audience to connect with his struggles. Furthermore, showcasing a pivotal moment where he must choose between maintaining the status quo or embracing a new approach could highlight his growth and make his eventual transformation more impactful. |
jen | Jen's character arc follows her journey from a curious and naive young woman seeking adventure to a strong-willed and skilled warrior who confronts her inner demons and external challenges. Initially, she is torn between her family's expectations and her desire for freedom, leading to rebellious actions and emotional turmoil. As she faces various trials, including captivity and conflict, Jen learns to harness her strength and combat skills while grappling with her feelings for Lo and her loyalty to her mentor. By the climax, she confronts her past and the expectations placed upon her, ultimately choosing her own path. In the resolution, Jen emerges as a confident and self-assured individual, having reconciled her desires for love and independence, and finding a sense of peace within herself. | While Jen's character arc is rich and layered, it may benefit from a clearer progression of her internal conflicts and resolutions. The transitions between her various emotional states can feel abrupt at times, which may confuse the audience regarding her motivations. Additionally, while her combat skills and independence are well-established, her emotional connections, particularly with Lo and her mentor, could be further developed to enhance the stakes of her choices. The screenplay could also explore more moments of vulnerability that allow the audience to empathize with her struggles, making her eventual triumph more impactful. | To improve Jen's character arc, consider incorporating more scenes that highlight her emotional growth and the consequences of her choices. This could include moments of reflection where she confronts her fears and desires, allowing the audience to witness her transformation more gradually. Additionally, deepen her relationships with supporting characters, particularly Lo and her mentor, by including shared experiences that reveal their complexities and the stakes involved in her decisions. This will create a stronger emotional foundation for her journey. Finally, ensure that her moments of vulnerability are balanced with her assertiveness, showcasing her multifaceted nature and making her eventual triumph feel earned and relatable. |
bo | Bo's character arc begins with him as a determined and skeptical security officer, focused solely on his duty to uncover the truth behind a series of thefts. Initially, he clashes with other characters due to his strong beliefs and suspicions. As the story progresses, Bo's journey leads him to confront his own biases and work alongside Tsai, a character he initially doubts. This partnership forces him to reassess his views and embrace collaboration over isolation. Ultimately, Bo transforms into a loyal and courageous ally, willing to risk his life to protect others and uphold justice. His arc culminates in a moment of vulnerability when he is disabled by Jade Fox, which serves as a turning point, reinforcing his commitment to his friends and the cause, and solidifying his role as a protector. | While Bo's character arc is compelling, it may benefit from deeper emotional exploration. His motivations are clear, but the screenplay could delve more into his backstory to provide context for his strong sense of duty and justice. Additionally, the transition from skepticism to collaboration with Tsai feels somewhat abrupt. More gradual development of their relationship could enhance the believability of Bo's transformation. Furthermore, while Bo's bravery is highlighted, moments of doubt or internal conflict could add depth to his character, making his eventual triumph more impactful. | To improve Bo's character arc, consider incorporating flashbacks or dialogue that reveals his past experiences that shaped his sense of duty and justice. This could help the audience understand his motivations better. Additionally, allow for more scenes that showcase his internal struggle as he grapples with his skepticism towards Tsai. Building a stronger rapport between Bo and Tsai through shared experiences or challenges could make their partnership feel more organic. Finally, including moments where Bo questions his own decisions or fears for the safety of those he protects could add layers to his character, making his eventual bravery and loyalty resonate more with the audience. |
tsai | Tsai's character arc begins with him as a vengeful fighter, consumed by anger and a desire for justice. As he confronts the realities of his quest, he becomes more cautious and secretive, grappling with the moral implications of his actions. Throughout the screenplay, Tsai learns to balance his thirst for revenge with the responsibilities of being a father and a protector. By the climax, he must confront Jade Fox not only to avenge his wife but also to ensure the safety of his daughter. In the resolution, Tsai emerges as a more nuanced character, having transformed his anger into a commitment to justice that prioritizes his family's well-being over personal vengeance. | While Tsai's character arc is compelling, it risks becoming predictable if not handled with care. The transition from a vengeful fighter to a more balanced protector could benefit from additional layers of internal conflict. The screenplay should explore the emotional toll of his quest for revenge on his relationship with May and how it shapes his decisions. Additionally, the motivations behind his secretive nature could be further developed to add depth to his character. | To improve Tsai's character arc, consider incorporating moments of vulnerability that reveal his internal struggles. Show how his quest for vengeance affects his relationship with May, perhaps leading to a pivotal moment where he must choose between revenge and her safety. Introducing secondary characters who challenge his views on justice and revenge could also enrich his journey. Finally, ensure that his transformation is gradual and believable, allowing the audience to witness his growth through key decisions and moral dilemmas. |
may | May's character arc begins with her being consumed by grief and a singular focus on avenging her mother's death, leading her to make impulsive decisions that put her and others at risk. As the story progresses, she encounters various challenges that force her to confront the consequences of her actions and the cycle of violence she is perpetuating. Through her interactions with Bo and other characters, May learns the importance of forgiveness, understanding, and the value of life beyond revenge. By the climax, she must choose between her desire for vengeance and the possibility of healing and moving forward. Ultimately, May evolves from a vengeful daughter into a more nuanced individual who understands that justice can take many forms, and that true strength lies in compassion and resilience. | While May's character arc is compelling, it risks becoming one-dimensional if her motivations remain solely focused on revenge. The emotional intensity of her journey is strong, but there is a need for more depth in her relationships and personal growth. The screenplay should explore her internal conflicts more thoroughly, allowing the audience to see her struggle with her impulses and the moral implications of her quest for vengeance. Additionally, her interactions with other characters could be expanded to showcase her growth and the impact of her choices on those around her. | To improve May's character arc, consider introducing moments of vulnerability where she questions her motivations and the path she is on. Incorporate scenes that highlight her relationships with other characters, particularly Bo, to emphasize her capacity for compassion and growth. Allow her to experience setbacks that challenge her beliefs about justice and revenge, leading to a more gradual and believable transformation. Additionally, explore themes of forgiveness and healing, perhaps through flashbacks or conversations that reveal her mother's values, which could serve as a guiding force for May's eventual change in perspective. |
madam yu | Throughout the screenplay, Madam Yu undergoes a significant transformation. Initially, she is portrayed as a traditional and somewhat judgmental figure, focused on societal expectations and appearances. As the story progresses, she confronts her own fears and biases, leading to a gradual shift in her perspective. By the climax, she learns to embrace her daughter's individuality and desires, ultimately supporting Jen in her choices rather than imposing her own. This arc culminates in a moment of vulnerability where Madam Yu acknowledges her own limitations and the importance of trust in their relationship, allowing for a deeper bond with Jen. | While Madam Yu's character arc is compelling, it risks falling into the trope of the overbearing mother who must learn to let go. This can feel predictable and may not resonate with audiences looking for more nuanced character development. Additionally, her transformation could benefit from more specific catalysts that challenge her traditional views, rather than relying solely on her relationship with Jen. The arc could also explore the internal conflict she faces, making her journey more relatable and complex. | To improve Madam Yu's character arc, consider introducing specific events or interactions that challenge her beliefs and force her to confront her biases. For instance, she could encounter a situation that directly contradicts her views on social status, prompting her to reevaluate her priorities. Additionally, incorporating moments where she reflects on her own past choices could add depth to her character. Allowing her to have a mentor or friend who embodies a more progressive viewpoint could also serve as a catalyst for her transformation. Finally, ensuring that her journey is not solely about letting go of control but also about finding a balance between guidance and freedom would create a more nuanced and satisfying arc. |
li | Li's character arc follows his journey from a single-minded investigator focused solely on capturing the Fox to a more nuanced individual who learns to embrace his emotions and the complexities of his relationships. Initially, he is driven by duty and a desire for justice, but as he confronts his feelings for Jen and his past with Yu, he begins to question the nature of his mission and what it means to truly protect those he cares about. By the end of the feature, Li evolves into a more balanced character who understands that love and duty can coexist, allowing him to make choices that reflect both his responsibilities and his heart. | While Li's character arc is compelling, it risks becoming predictable if not executed with sufficient depth. The transition from a stoic investigator to a more emotionally aware individual needs to be carefully crafted to avoid clichés. Additionally, the internal conflicts he faces should be more explicitly tied to the external challenges he encounters, ensuring that his emotional growth feels earned and relevant to the plot. | To improve Li's character arc, consider incorporating more specific events that challenge his beliefs and force him to confront his emotions directly. For example, introduce a pivotal moment where he must choose between capturing the Fox and saving Jen, which would highlight his internal struggle. Additionally, deepen his relationship with Yu by including flashbacks or conversations that reveal their shared history, making his emotional journey more impactful. Finally, ensure that his growth is reflected in his dialogue and actions throughout the screenplay, allowing the audience to witness his transformation in real-time. |
lo | Lo's character arc follows his journey from a conflicted bandit driven by emotional turmoil and a desire for connection to a steadfast protector who learns to embrace vulnerability and sacrifice for love. Initially, he is portrayed as a charismatic yet enigmatic figure, masking his deeper feelings with playful banter and a tough exterior. As the story progresses, he confronts the dangers surrounding him and the emotional stakes of his relationship with Jen. Through trials and tribulations, Lo evolves into a more self-aware individual, ultimately recognizing that true strength lies in vulnerability and the willingness to sacrifice for those he loves. By the climax, he fully embraces his role as a protector, demonstrating unwavering loyalty and love for Jen, culminating in a poignant resolution that highlights his growth. | While Lo's character is rich and multifaceted, his arc could benefit from clearer motivations and stakes that drive his decisions throughout the screenplay. The emotional depth is present, but there are moments where his internal conflict could be more explicitly tied to the external challenges he faces. Additionally, the balance between his playful demeanor and deeper emotions may sometimes feel inconsistent, potentially confusing the audience about his true nature. | To improve Lo's character arc, consider establishing more concrete goals and obstacles that directly relate to his emotional journey. This could involve creating specific moments where his past as an orphan and bandit directly influences his decisions, allowing for a more cohesive narrative. Additionally, incorporating pivotal scenes that force Lo to confront his vulnerabilities head-on would enhance his growth. For instance, a moment of crisis where he must choose between his safety and Jen's well-being could serve as a powerful turning point. Finally, ensuring that his playful banter consistently reflects his emotional state will help maintain clarity in his character development. |
Top Correlations and patterns found in the scenes:
Pattern | Explanation |
---|---|
High Concept Scores Correlate with High Character and Plot Scores | Scenes with high concept scores (8 or above) consistently show high scores in character and plot development. This suggests a strong foundation in your story's core idea translates effectively into well-developed characters and a compelling plot. Maintain this strong connection for continued success. |
Emotional Impact and Dialogue: A Notable Disparity | Several scenes (e.g., scenes 3, 38, 40, 50, 58) showcase a significant gap between high emotional impact scores and low dialogue scores. This indicates potential for improvement; examine how dialogue contributes to the emotional weight of these scenes. Consider whether dialogue could be strengthened to better reflect the intended emotional impact, or if the emotional resonance is achieved through other means (visuals, actions, etc.) |

How I Build a Story's Philosophical Conflict | How do you build philosophical conflict into your story? Where do you start? And how do you develop it into your characters and their external actions. Today I’m going to break this all down and make it fully clear in this episode. |
Endings: The Good, the Bad, and the Insanely Great | By Michael Arndt: I put this lecture together in 2006, when I started work at Pixar on Toy Story 3. It looks at how to write an "insanely great" ending, using Star Wars, The Graduate, and Little Miss Sunshine as examples. 90 minutes |
Tips for Writing Effective Character Goals | By Jessica Brody (Save the Cat!): Writing character goals is one of the most important jobs of any novelist. But are your character's goals...mushy? |
- Physical environment: The screenplay is set primarily in and around Peking, China, during a seemingly historical period. Locations include traditional Chinese compounds, bustling city streets, grand halls, serene monasteries, a Mongolian desert, and barren mountain caves. The environment ranges from opulent and elegant settings to gritty, impoverished areas and harsh, unforgiving landscapes. Specific physical details like gray tiled roofs, ancient swords, medicinal herbs, bamboo forests, and even a dry creek bed are used to paint a vivid picture of the world.
- Culture: The screenplay is deeply rooted in Chinese culture, featuring elements like traditional Chinese compounds, martial arts practices (Kung Fu, sword fighting), tea ceremonies, calligraphy, embroidery, ancestral worship, arranged marriages, and specific social customs and etiquette. References to the Giang Hu (underworld) and its codes add another layer of cultural richness. Mongolian culture is briefly touched upon through the desert setting and bandit culture.
- Society: The societal structure is heavily hierarchical, with a clear distinction between social classes and power dynamics. There's a rigid social order reflected in the relationships between masters and apprentices, servants and masters, government officials and citizens, and even within families. The Giang Hu underworld adds a layer of complexity, operating outside formal societal structures but still possessing its own code of conduct. The emphasis on honor, duty, family reputation, and arranged marriages further illustrates the societal norms.
- Technology: Technology is minimal and primarily pre-industrial. The primary modes of transportation are carriages and horses. Weapons are primarily traditional: swords, lances, arrows, knives, and machetes. Communication relies on word of mouth, flyers, and gongs. This limited technology highlights the historical setting and underscores the importance of personal skill and martial prowess.
- Characters influence: The world's physical environment, culture, and societal structures significantly shape character experiences and actions. Characters are constantly navigating the constraints and expectations of their social standing, their cultural traditions, and the physical challenges of their environment. The hierarchical society influences their relationships, their choices, and the risks they're willing to take. The limited technology emphasizes personal strength and skill as means of survival and success.
- Narrative contribution: The world-building elements drive the narrative forward. The theft of the Green Destiny sword serves as a central plot device, leading to a series of events that unfold across various locations and social circles. The clash between traditional values and personal desires fuels much of the conflict. The diverse settings provide opportunities for exciting action sequences and dramatic confrontations.
- Thematic depth contribution: The world-building contributes to the screenplay's thematic depth by exploring themes of honor and duty, love and betrayal, freedom and constraint, tradition and modernity, and the cyclical nature of violence. The contrast between the elegant and the gritty, the powerful and the powerless, enhances these themes. The characters' struggles against the backdrop of this rich and complex world add layers of meaning and resonate powerfully with the audience.
