Analysis Exercise
The Active Opposition Rewrite: Take a dialogue-heavy scene where one character is passive, and rewrite it giving each character a concrete, opposing goal. Introduce a physical object that both characters want or need, and let the scene play out as a negotiation over that object. End with one character making a tactical decision that changes the balance of power.
The Subtext-Only Rewrite: Choose a scene where a character openly states their feelings or the problem, and rewrite it so that no character ever says what they mean or wants directly. Make the dialogue about a surface subject—an object, a memory, an appointment—while the real negotiation happens underneath. No inner monologue or voiceover is allowed.
The Turn Drill: Write a two-page scene between two characters in conflict. On page one, give character A the clear upper hand. At the exact midpoint of the scene, have character B make a surprising choice, reveal new information, or perform a small physical action that reverses the power dynamic. Write three different versions of this scene with three different reversals.
