Analysis Exercise
Exercise 1: The Silent Rewrite. Choose three scenes from the screenplay and rewrite each one with zero dialogue, conveying the same emotional arc entirely through physical action, object choices, and visual attention. Then decide whether the version with dialogue is truly better—or simply more convenient.
Exercise 2: The Personal Antagonist. Take the scenes where the writer feels opposition is weakest (the Pay Clerk, the Waiting Actor, Laemmle, the agent) and rewrite them giving the opposing character a specific, personal reason for their resistance—a sick child, a debt, a humiliation they once suffered. Make the opposition's logic so compelling that the audience almost sides with them.
Exercise 3: The Stakes Audit. For any scene the writer feels is 'too quiet,' write a single sentence that makes the cost of failure explicit (e.g., 'If the Guild loses this vote, Karloff's friend Peter will be deported') and place that fact somewhere in the scene as a line of dialogue, an image, or a letter. Then remove it and test whether the scene still works. Do this repeatedly to calibrate the threshold between restraint and vagueness.
