Analysis Exercise
Exercise 1: The Personal-Stakes Rewrite. Take the next scene where Daniel or Maya is mainly gathering information—an interrogation, an archive search, a system readout—and rewrite it so Daniel has a concrete personal stake. For example, he might be trying to find out whether the system can predict something happening to Sophie, or he might be looking for a sign that his daughter is still herself. Do not add dialogue that states the stakes; make the stakes visible through his choices, questions, and physical behavior.
Exercise 2: Subtext-Only Dialogue. Rewrite a confrontation scene—such as Daniel vs. Shaw, Daniel vs. Pike, or Daniel vs. the entity—with the rule that no character may state their real intent, information, or feeling directly. Every line must be an attempt to gain an advantage, test the other person, conceal a weakness, or mislead. Use physical actions (checking a watch, tapping, not answering) to carry the emotional truth.
Exercise 3: The Silent Scene Pass. Take a dialogue-heavy scene and rewrite it with zero dialogue, using only visual action, sound, and environmental detail to communicate the same information and emotional beats. Afterward, add back only the fewest lines that are absolutely necessary.
