Analysis Exercise
The 'Want-Line' Drill: Before writing any scene, write one sentence: 'In this scene, Jimmy wants [specific, concrete outcome] from [specific person], but [specific obstacle] forces him to [make a choice].' Then write the scene so every beat either pushes toward or away from that outcome.
The Silent Rewrite: Take one dialogue-heavy 'talking-head' scene and rewrite it with no dialogue at all. Use only action, props, glances, and physical behavior to communicate the same emotional information. Then add dialogue back only where it is absolutely necessary, and check whether the scene still works.
The Opposition Upgrade: For any scene with weak conflict, write a short paragraph from the antagonist's point of view defining their self-interested goal, their personal stake, and the specific tactic they will use to defeat Jimmy. Then rewrite the scene so the antagonist actively counter-punches, instead of just taunting or complaining. Do this even for minor characters like barbers.
The Payoff Board: Create a chart of every object, line, or trait introduced in the first half of the screenplay (cookies, the book, the forty-five bucks, the barbers, the lottery ticket, etc.) and check which ones are paid off. Then rewrite one 'plant' scene to make the setup more visible, or one 'payoff' scene to make the callback more explicit.
