Analysis Exercise
The Silent Rewrite: Once a week, take a scene from your current draft and rewrite it with no dialogue at all. Convey the scene's emotional beat and plot information entirely through action, gesture, facial expression, sound, and environment.
Want-Line Before Scene: Before writing or rewriting any scene, write two or three sentences identifying each major character's specific want, the immediate obstacle, and the scene's worst possible outcome. Then rewrite the scene so that at least one character actively tries to achieve a goal while the other actively, even quietly, resists.
The Subtext Pass: Take one scene from the current draft each week and rewrite it with a hidden private agenda for each character. Underneath every line, give each character a different emotional truth—e.g., one is asking about the case but is really asking for forgiveness; one is offering help but is really seeking control. Keep the dialogue mostly the same, but alter the beats, pauses, and physical actions to reveal the unspoken layer.
